SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,328, dated January 22, 1884,

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, NICHOLAS LENNARDS, of the town of Harvard, in the county of Mo- Henry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a clear and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification.

A is the wall of a building. Bare eyes let into said wall upon each side of a window, (J. D are also small eyes let into the wall at a suitable point above eyes 13. E are arms extending from eyes 13, being removablysecured thereto bymeans of thumb-screws F, and held in place by rods G, running from crossor vertical strips H, at' the outer extremity of 'each arm, to eyes D. I is a cross-bar fitting over the arms E,holding them securely against lateral movement. J are brakes pivoted to' pieces H, the longer arm of each brake engaging with a governing-rope, K, extending to or nearly to the ground. L are drumsjournaled below arms E. M are ropes attached to said drums and bearing counterbalancingweights N. P are ropes wound upon the drums in an opposite direction to ropes M, the free ends being secured to a car or basket, B, said car being provided with rods n, bearing hooks for engaging with eyes m, affixed to the sidewalk, pavement, or other object upon the ground for holding the car against being pulledup by'the weights when empty, and

when it is desired to prevent its rising.

When constructed and arranged in accord-v ance with the foregoing description, the device may remain secured upon the exterior of the building or attached to the supports when de sired, and when located at a window wherefrom persons are desirous of. descending is easily heldin place by those upon the ground operating the brake-ropes. As the car dc scends, the weights are drawn up, and when the occupants of the car have alighted the weights'will automatically draw the car up to any desired point.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A fire-escape consisting of the two drums supported at right angles to the wallf'of a building, as set forth, the two ropes wound upon each of said drums in opposite directions, the free end of one rope upon each drum bearing a counterbalancing-weight, and the ends of the other ropes engaging with a basket or car, the movements of said cars beingregulated by two independent brakes, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a fire-escape of the character herein specified, the arms E, secured to eyes Band bearing pieces H at their outer extremities,

rods G, passing from pieces H to eyes D, and

cross-bar I, the whole arranged substantially as shown and described.

3. In a fire-escape, the two drums L, supported at right angles to the wall of a building, ropes M. and I, car a, and the two brakes .T, operated by means of ropes K, the whole combined and arranged to operate substantially as shown. and described.
