PIPE-COUPLING FOR BEER-KETTLES.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN STRATER, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Pipe-Ooupling for Beer-Kettles, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to means for connecting the ends of the pipe-coil in a beer-kettle with outside pipes; and it consists in the construction of the several parts of the device,
and in their combination with each other and with the coil and kettle, as hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

It is customary to employ for heating purposes in a beer-kettle, A, tubular steam-coils,
preferably two, B and 0, arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 1, each coil being supported at a little distance from thebottom of the kettle by means of bars a. Steam enters each coil after passing through a pipe outside of the kettle, and, with the water of condensation, makes exit by means of a similar pipe projecting downward outside of the kettle at the other end of the coil. While in use for heating, the coils lie flat in the kettle, as the coil B 5 but, in order to more easily remove substance from and cleanse the kettle, thecoils are swung up edgewise, as the coil 0. It is also necessary at times to raise the coil out of the kettle.
Heretofore it has been customary to make the passage through the side 0 of the kettle by means of a pipe connected directly to the end of thecoil within the kettle by means of an ordinary coupling. Such coupling and the bolts or screws thereof are exposed to the substances in the kettle, and an incrustation, called beer-stone, is formed thereon. This beer-stone is very hard, and much labor is required to remove the same from said coupling Fig. 2 shows one 'of' and screws when it is necessary to swing the coil or raise it from the kettle. H
It is the object of my inventionto overcome this difficulty, and to make such connection of the coil .with outside pipes that the joint formed by coil and the pipe extending through the side of the kettle may be readily loosened, and thus, as well as in other ways, the swinging or raising of the coil be facilitated.
At each end of each coil, as the coil 13, a pipe, D, extends through the side a of the kettle, being secured firmly therein by means of a flange, d, at the inner end, and a nut and flange, e, screwed on the exterior part closely against the kettle. Extending from the top or bottom side of the pipe D is a pipe, E,
which forms the inlet-passage for the steam,
or the outlet for steam or water of condensation. Directly to the end of the coil is firmly joined a piece, F, as by means of the flanges f and g and bolts h. This piece F has a flange, i, which bears against the flange d, there being packing j between these flanges. The flange d has an extension, 70, along part of its periphery, which is opposite the under edgeface of the flange i. A rod, G, having a head, I, which-bears against the outer end of the pipe Dth ere being packing m between this head and the pipe Dextends through the pipe D,

There are several tubular openings, at, extending lengthwise through the piece F, which provide free passage between the pipe D and coil B. A rod, H, fitted to slidein a transverse hole in the head Z, forms a convenient lever for reyolving the rod and screw G.
A pipe, D, is secured in each of two opposite sides of the kettle, and a piece, F, firmly connected to each end of a coil, as specified above. The coil is then lowered into the kettle, so that the edge-faces of the flanges 1; will meet and rest on the extensions k. A rod, G, is thereupon thrust through each pipe D, and screwed into a piece, F, till the parts are drawn closely together, the packing at j and m insuring tight joints at these places. is to be swung up edgewise, the rod G is screwed a slight distance from the piece F, the joint at j being thus loosened. \Vhen the coil is to be removed from the kettle, this rod is screwed entirely out of the piece F. The rod When the coil and screw G being completely protected from the substances in the kettle outside of the coil, none of the aforesaid incrustation can form thereon, and it, as well as the threads in the piece F, which forms a nut for the screw on the rod, are always in good working condition. This piece F may be otherwise joined to the coil than shown, and provide a passage through the same, and form a nut, whereby the end of the coil may be secured to the pipe extending through the side of the kettle.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of a pipe secured in the side of a kettle, a coil in said kettle, a piece, F, joined to said coil and forming a nut atthe end thereof, and a rod and screw, G, within said pipe, and adapted to screw into said piece F, substantially as and for the purpose set,

2. The combination of a coil, 13 a pipe, D, an intermediate piece, F, a rod and screw, G,
and a pipe, E, with a kettle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of a coil, 13, a kettle, a pipe, D, fixed in the side of the kettle, a flange, (1, on said pipe, and having extension, k, an intermediate piece between said coil and said pipe, having a flange, i, and forming a nut, as specified, and a screw, G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of coil 13, intermediate piece, F, packing pipe D, pipe E, and rod and screw G, with a kettle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, in and with a kettle, of a coil, B, an intermediate piece, F, packing j, pipe D, rod and screw G, and packing m,
substantially as specified.
