Be it known that l, E. Louis Lown, Jr., of vthe city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of lNew York, have invented a new l and useful Improvement in Machines for Obtaining Fibers from Fiber-Bearing Substances, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to machines for obtaining fibers, in which are combinedabed or con- Io 4cave and a rotary cylinder arranged above and in the bed or concave; and it consists in various novel features in the construction of many of the parts of 'such machines, and in the manner 4of combining the -parts together, all' as I5 hereinafter described, and as set forth in the claims.:

The principal working parts or members of .themachine are a bed or concave, A, of approximately semicircular shape, and a cylinder, which is of approximately circular shape, although it may varyA somewhat from a true 3o cylinder. The bed or concaveA, here shown,
iscomposed of a main or principal portion, which extends beneath the cylinder and upward on the delivery side ofthe machine, and which is xed in position, and an adjustable 35 portion or section, A', whichis attheentrance side of the machine. The cylinder comprises a shaft, C, heads or circular supports C', secured on the shaft, and staves e, which are secured to the iianges c of the heads or supports O' by bolts e2, andA which form the working-surface of the cylinder.
The staves b b of the bed or concave and the staves e of the cylinder are shown as provided are reversible, so that either side or face may be presented outward for use. They maybe unbolted from their heads or supports C', reversed in position, and again secured in place. As shown, the 4grooves in what are n'ow their inner sides or faces areof finer pitch than the grooves in what are now their outer sides or faces, and this construction may render them better adapted for operating upon differentA materials. Even if the grooves or projections on both sides were of like pitch, the staves would be susceptible of longer use, for when one side became smootlithey could be reversed in position.`

In the peripheries of the heads or supports C are depressions or recesses f, and in these is seated or arranged an adjustable section. of stave, C3, which may be of metal. As shown, it is provided with lugs or ears f', and is hinged to the heads or supports C by a bolt passing 9o supports. It may have a smooth surface, or its surface may be grooved or roughened.

At each end of the stave or section C3 is a bolt orscrew, f2, having a nut, fiwhich'is fitted and held against movementV lengthwise of the screw in a recess in the flange e of the head or support C. screw will extend as the stave or section C is moved inward and outward by turning the nut.- By moving the section C3 in or out relatively tov the center ofthe cylinder the size of the pocket or cavity C2 is increased or diminished in size. The pocket or cavity C2 greatly facilitates the introduction of material into the machine, as it affords an increased space between the cylinder and concave when the said pocket or cavity comes to the entrance side of the machine.
D designates the boxes or bearings for the cylinder-shaft C. They rest on the side frames, B, and are each provided with lateral extensions D and a downward]y-extending arm, D, in which is a slot, f/.
Through the extensions D/ extend bolts g', which pass through slots g2 in the side frame, B, as shown dotted in Figs. l and 3, and have springs g3 applied to them above the boxes. These springs hold the cylinder down with a yielding force, but still permit it to rise. Setscrews gt, inserted through the extensions D and impinging on the top of the side frame, B, limit the downward movement ot' the box and cylinder.
Through the slotted arms l)' are inserted bolts g5, which guide the boxes in rising and falling, and the lower one ot' which limits the rising movement by reason of the lower end of the slot g coming against it. The two bolts g5 aid in steadying the box and preventing its canting when it is raised off its seat on the side frame, B.
For operating upon different materials it is desirable to vary the distance between the cylinder andbed or concave at the ent-rance and delivery sides of the machine, and this is effected by shifting the boxes D horizontally.
In the side frames, B, dare three sets of holes, g, for the bolts g5, thus providing for different degrees of adjustment of the cylinder. These holes are shown in Fig. l, the bolts gi being screwed into one set.
Upon the shaft C of the cylinder is a spurwheel, E, which receives motion from a second wheel, F, on a shaft, F', and the shaft F receives motion from awheel, G, secured upon a driving-shaft, G, and gearing with the wheel F.
On the shaft G is a pulley, G2, for a drivingbelt. Obviously the shaft G and wheel G might be dispensed with, and the pulley G2 placed on the shaft F, but the motion imparted to the cylinder would not be so slow as it now is. \Vhcn the cylinder is shifted horizontally, the shaft F must also be shifted to maintain the wheels E F in gear. In this example of my invention I provide for thisI by mounting the shaft F in eccentric-boxes, l1, which are fitted and adapted to turn in seats or holes h in the side frames, B. Each box has a fiange, and is secured against accidental turning by a bolt, 1', inserted through B turning the boxes h a quarter of a turn, thd
shaft F and the cylinder may be shifted, so that the bolts gf will enter the middle s et of holes, g, and the boxes are then secured by inserting the bolts l.' in either of two holes, t i, in the side frames. Vy turning the boxes half aturn, the shaft F and cylinder may be shifted, so that the bolts r/f' will enter th'e set of holes g, farthest to the left in Fig. 1, and the boxes h are then secured by inserting the bolts i in holes Ai2 in the side frames, B. The shaft G is also mounted in eccentric-boxes 71, like those above described, secured in a like manner in different positions.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a machine for obtaining fibers, a rotary cylinder composed of heads or supports and reversible staves secured to said heads or supports, and having opposite sides or faces grooved or roughened, so that either side or face may be presented for use, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for obtaining fibers, a bed or concave composed of supports and reversible staves secured to said supports, and having opposite sides or faces grooved or roughened, so that either side or face may be presented for use, substantially as described.
3. In a machine for obtaining fibers, a rotary cylinder composed of heads or supports and reversible staves secured to said heads or supports, and having in their opposite sides grooves or projections of different pitch,where by provision is afforded, by reversing the staves, for operating upon different materials more effectively, substantially as described.
4. In a machine for obtaining fibers, a bed or concave composed of supports and reversible staves secured to said supports, and having in their opposite sides grooves or projections of different pitch, whereby provision is afforded, by reversing the staves, for operating upon different materials more effectively, substantially as described.
5. In a machine for obtaining fibers,the coinbination of a rotary cylinder andabed or 'concave, both having their working-surfaces composed of reversible staves, which are grooved or roughencd on opposite sides or fae'es,so that either side may be presented for use, substantially as described.
6. In a machine for obtaining fibers, the combination, with a bed or concave, of a rotary cylinder consisting of' heads or circular supports having formed in their peripheriesdepressions or recesses, and staves secured to said heads or supports, a movable section or stave arranged in the depressions or recesses of the heads or supports, and forming a pocket or cavity in the cylinder, and devices whereby said 'section or stave may be adjusted toward and from the center of the cylinder to vary the size of the said pocket or cavity, substantially as described.
7. In a machinefor obtaining fibers, the combination, with a rotary cylinder, of abed or IOO IIO
concave wherein the said cylinder works, ex-
tending beneath and upward on each side of the cylinder, and comprising a principal portion, which is fixed and extends beneath the cylinder and upward on the delivery side of the machine, and a hinged portion at the entrance side of the machine, and devices for adjusting said hinged portion toward and from the cylinder, whereby provision is afforded for varying the distance between the cylinder and bed or concave at the entrance, and without moving the principal working portion of the bed or concave, substantially as described.
S. In a machine for obtaining flbers,the combination, with a bed or concave approximately semicircular in form7 of a cylinder which is approximately circular in form,working within the bed or concave, and bearings for said cylinder, which are movable horizontally to vary thel distance between the bed or concave and cylinder at the entrance and delivery sides of the machine, substantially as described.
9. In a machine for obtaining ibers,the combination of a bed or concave, a cylinder working within the bed or concave, bearings or boxes for the cylinder, which are movable to vary the distance between the bed or concave and the -cylinder at the entrance and delivery sides of 4bearings or boxes for said shaft, which are l movable, whereby provision is afforded for adjusting said shaft correspondingly to the Vboxes D, provided with the lateral extensions D and with the arms D2, the bolts g', having a slotted connection with the frame, the springs g3, applied to said bolts, the screws 9*, for lirn iting the downward movement of said boxes, and the bolts g5, all substantially as described. 12. The combination ofthe frame B, the bed or concave A, the cylinder, the boxes D, movable as described, the shaft F, and wheels F E, connecting it with the cylinder, and the eccentric-boxes h,fitted to the frame B, and adapted to be turned therein, substantially as described.
