WIND-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,057, dated January 15, 1884.

Be it known that I, R. N. RocKwnLL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Peabody, in the county of Marion and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in find-Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspectiveviex'v of my improved wind-wheel. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the hub of the same, showing four vanes inserted, illustrating the manner of inserting the vanes; and Figs. 3, 4, 5,'and 6 are detail views of the several parts of the wheel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to wind-wheels; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts ofthe vanes and their fastenings in a wind-wheel, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the drive-shaft' of the mill, the outer portion of which shaft is square, having an outer screw-threaded end, upon which a nut, B, fits and turns, while the inner end of thesquare portion is provided with aflange, C, projecting laterally.
The square end of the shaft fits into a square central perforation, D, in alhub orpdisk, E, the edge of which has a number of inclined or spiral mortises, F, around its periphery, into which mortises the inner ends of the vanes G fit. The vanes G are longer than the supplemental vanes, H, which are placed with their ends between the inner ends of the longer vanes, resting with their inner ends against the portion of the rim of the hub, between two mortises, the vanes G being as much longer than the vanes II as the depth of the mortises.
A disk, I, having a square central aperture, J, which fits over the square end of the shaft, and,being of a larger diameter than the hub, is placed upon the inner end of the 5o square portion of the shaft, bearing against the flange C with its rear side, while its frontward-facing side bears against theA rear edges of the vanes.
A disk, Ii, of the same diameter as disk I, 5 5 and having a sharp inwardly projecting flange, L, V-shaped in section, fits with its central perforation, M, over the screw-threaded end of the shaft, and may be pressed in against the front edges of the vanes by means of 6c the nut N, fitting and turning upon the screwthreaded end of the shaft, and by means of a number of screw-bolts, O, passing through a lseries of perforations in the rims of the disks and through the vanes, securing the disks 6 5 and pressing them tightly against the edges of the vanes. It will be seen that in this manner every vane. need not be bolted or otherwise secured to the hub or the disks, the sharp inwardly-projecting flange cutting into the 7o edges of the vanes, holding them fast.
For the purpose of securing the'outer ends of the vanes, thela-tter are fastened with their outer ends to an annular rim or flat ring, I), which prevents the ends from becoming bent 75 out of the plane of the other vanes, and preventing the vanes which are inserted between the vanes inserted into the spiral inortises from working out and becoming loose.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim 8o and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The combination of the hub having the spiral mortises in its periphery, the longer vanes fitting with their inner ends into the 85 said mortises, the shorter vanes fitting with their inner ends into the spaces between the ends of the longer vanes, and means for holding the said vanes in position, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. 90

The herein described wind -wheel, consisting of the shaft having the outer square portion and the outer screw-threaded end provided with a fastening-nut, the hub having the spiral mortises in its rim, and having 95 the square central perforation, the longer vanes, the shorter vanes, the inner smooth disk, the outer disk having the annular sharp inwardly-projecting fla-nge upon its inner face, the bolts passing through the edges of the disks and through t-hevanes, and the outer at ring or annular rim fastened to the outer 5 ends of the vanes, all Constructed and combined as and for the purpose shown and set forth. u
