6 Claims. (Ql. ll--166) This invention relates to internal grinders and more particularly to an improved internal grinder quill with adjustable grinding wheel supporting extensions.
.Internal grinders have been employed requiring different holders or quills for each size of grinding wheel or with a bore and having longitudinally adjusted and secured therein an extension upon which the grinding wheel is removable secured.
It isafurther object herein to provide a novel form of extension which may be reversed within the quill holder'and having a smooth bore at one end adapted to adjustably receive a second longiutdinally adjustable extension to which grinding wheels of diit'erent diameters may be removably secured selectively.
It is still another object to provide in said second extension a similar smooth bore adjacent one end and with said second extension reversible end to end within said first extension adapted to receive a longitudinally adjustable shank upon which is secured a minimum diameter grinding wheel.
It is another object herein to provide a grinding quill wherein the first extension may supportably receive grinding wheels of varying diameters within a predetermined range, wherein the second extension may removably receive smaller grinding wheels of varying dimension within a predetermined range, and wherein said second extension mayinterchangeably receive the shanks of integral grinding wheels of varying but reduced diameter within a predetermined range.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the present internal grinder quill, partially broken away and sectioned, illustrating in phantom lines the longitudinal adjustment of the grinding wheel supporting extension.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the use of a second extension for mounting reduced sized grinding wheels with one position of longitudinal adjustment shown in phantom lines.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing another usage of the second extension for removably receiving the supporting shank of a smaller diameter grinder and with one position of longitudinal adjustment thereof shown in phantom lines.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4+4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5--5 .of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a section takenv on line 6--6 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 7 is a section taken on line 77 of Fig. 1.
It will be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely one preferred embodiment of the invention and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set forth.
Referring to the drawing, the present internal grinder includes an elongated quill ii having a tapered mounting shank 12 at one end thereof adapted for mounting and securing within a conventional driving means for rotation about its longitudinal axis.
Flange 13 forms a part of quill 11 intermediate one end of said quill and one end of shank l2, and includes a pair of oppositely arranged wrench engaging flats 14 to facilitate securing or removal of shank 112 from the driving means employed. Flange i? also serves as a locating means in the projection of shank 3.2 within a similarly shaped driving spindle.
Quill 11 has an internal bore 15 which communicates with the corresponding internal counterbore 16 in shank 12 of slightly increased diameter. A pair of set screws 17 are adjustably threaded transversely through outer portions of quill ill adapted for retaining engagement with the elongated flat surface 2 of extension 18.
Said extension has a bore 19 therein extending throughout a substantial portion of its length terminating at one end in the internally threaded counterbore 20 of reduced diameter. Extension 13 is slidably positioned within the bore 15 of quill l1 and loosely within bore 16 of shank 12.
One end of said extension adjustably projects outwardly of quill it, as shown in Fig. l, and is secured in the desired position of adjustment by set screws 17.
The circular grinding wheel 21 abuts the outer end of extension 18 and has an outwardly opening bore 22 terminating upon one side in a counterbore of reduced diameter adapted to receive the socket head cap screw 23 which is threaded and secured within the counterborc outer end of extension 13 as at 20.
Fig. 1 shows in phantom, one of any number of positions of longitudinal adjustment of extension 18, depending upon the requirements of a particular internal grinding job.
Extension 18, adjacent the end thereof opposite from its threaded counterbore 26 has at least a pair of transverse set screws 25 for use as hereafter described in connection with Fig. 2.
Grinding wheel 21 may be of various sizes within a predetermined range as for example, from A; inch to 2 or more inches in diameter. Within this range only the single quill ill and extension 18 are required. Extension 18 may be longitudinally adjusted and secured within said quill for the desired depth of cut, or depending upon the spacing between the workpiece and power source.
The present invention also contemplates, in addition to the quill and above desired extension, the selective use of a second extension 26 to which is removably secured a range of smaller grinding wheels St).
For this purpose, extension 1:; of Fig. 1 is reversed end to end and reinserted within the bores 15-16 of the shank and quill fragmentarily shown in Fig. 2. One end of extension 18 projects axially from quill 11 so that its internal smooth bore 19 may slidably and adjustably receive the second extension 26.
Extension 18 is adjustably secured within quill 11 by set screws 17. The additional screws 25 in extension 18 are adapted to operatively engage the longitudinally extending fiat surface 32 of second extension 26 for adjustably securing the same as in the position shown in Fig. 2.
The second extension has a longitudinal bore 31 extending therethrough which at its outer end as viewed Patented Jan. 5, 1960 in Fig. 2 is internally threaded at 27, adapted to adjustably receive the socket head cap screw 28 nested within bore 29 of the reduced diameter grinding wheel 30. Said grinding wheel is of a smaller size than grinding wheel 21 and may be of a range of reduced size adapted for removably securing against the internally threaded one end of extension The opposite end of extension 2 has adjustably threaded therethrough a pair of set screws 33 in registry with the smooth bore 31 for use in the manner described in connection with 3.
As a part of the present invention the quill holder 11 is adapted for still sma ler sizes of grinding wheel as shown in Fig. 3. For this purpose, extension 26 is reversed end to end within extension 13 and adjustably secured therein by set screws For this construction one en of extension 26 projects axially outward of and is longitudinally adjustable with respect to extension This end of extension 26 has the smooth bore 31 within which is slidably adjusted shank 34 upon which is fixedly secured reduced diameter grinding wheel 35.
Similar shanks 34 may carry grinding wheels 35 of varying diameters within a predetermined range, smaller than the range of grinder diameters of Fig. 2.
In this small diameter range of grinders 35, the grind ing wheel is usually molded or fixedly secured over the supporting shank though any other suitable means is contemplated by which the grinding wheel 35 is secured to shank 34. Said shank also has'a longitudinally extending outer flat as operatively engaged by set screws 33, whereby said shank is susceptible to longitudinal adjustment within second extension 26, as indicated by the phantom lines in Fig. 3.
The flat surface 24 of extension 18 receives set screws 17 as shown in Fig. 4. This figure also indicates the respective flats 3235 adapted to cooperatively receive the corresponding set screws 25 and 33 respectively in extensions 18 and 2d.
The grinding wheels 3a and 35 are standard grinding wheels available on the market and come in a large range of diameters. Grinding wheel 35, for illustration, is /2 inch in diameter and /2 inch long, and as above described, may be replaced with other small grinding wheels selectively within a predetermined range.
Under some conditions and should there be employed a shank similar to shank but of smaller diameter, it is contemplated that intermediate slit bushings may be interposed in bore 31 effectively anchoring such smaller diameter shanks within said extension.
Having described my invention, reference should now be had to the following claims:
I claim:
1. An internal grinder comprising an elongated quill having a bore, a mounting shank at one end of said quill including a communicating bore, a cylindrical extension having a bore therethrough slidably positioned in said bores and adjustably projecting from said quill, set screws in said quill retainingly engaging said extension, one end of said extension being internally threaded, and a grinding wheel bearing against said one end and bolted thereto.
2. An internal grinder comprising an elongated quill having a bore, a mounting shank at one end of said quill including a communicating bore, a cylindrical extension having a bore therethrough slidably positioned in said bores and adjustably projecting from said quill, set screws in said quill retainingly engaging said extension, 21 second cylindrical extension having a bore therethrough slidably positioned in the bore of said first extension and adjustably projecting from said first extension, set screws in said first extension retainingly engaging said second extension, one end of said second extension being internally threaded, and a grinding wheel bearing against said one end of said second extension and bolted thereto.
3. An internal grinder comprising an elongated quill having a bore, a mounting shank at one end of said quill including a communicating bore, a cylindrical extension having a bore therethrough slidably positioned in said bores and adjustably projecting from said quill, set screws in said quill retainingly engaging said extension, :1 second cylindrical extension havin a bore therethrough slidably positioned in the bore of said first extension and adjustably projecting from said first extension, set screws in said first extension retainingly engaging said second extension, an elongated cylindrical shank slidably positioned in the bore of said second extension and adjustably projecting therefrom, a grinding wheel secured on the end of said cylindrical shank, and set screws in said second extension retainingly engaging said cylindrical shank.
4. An internal grinder comprising an elongated quill having a bore, a mounting shank at one end of said quill including a communicating bore, a cylindrical extension having a bore therethrough slidably positioned in said bores and adjustably projecting from said quill, set screws in said quill retainingly engaging said extension, one end of said extension being internally threaded, adapted to have a grinding wheel bolted thereto, said extension being reversible end to end in said quill and projected therefrom, a second cylindrical extension having a bore therethrough slidably positioned in the bore of said first extension and adjustably projecting therefrom, set screws in said first extension retainingly engaging said second extension, one end of said second extension being internally threaded adapted to have a grinding wheel bolted thereon, said second extension being reversible end to end in said first extension and projecting therefrom. an elongated cylindrical shank slidahly positioned in me bore of said second extension and adjustably projecting therefrom, a grinding wheel secured on the end of said cylindrical shank, and set screws in said second extension retainingly engaging said cylindrical shank.
5. The internal grinder of claim 4, external portions of said first and second extensions and said cylindrical shank having elongated fiat surfaces to cooperatively receive said set screws respectively.
6. The internal grinder of claim 4, said quill shank and the interior threaded end of said first extension having adjacent counterbores of increased diameter adapted to loosely receive inner end portions respectively of said first and second extensions respectively.
