POSITIVE SHUTTLE-MOTION FOR LOOIVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofv Letters Patent No. 291,844, dated January 8, 1884.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARvEY H. GREEN- nAN, of Cortlandville, in the county of Gortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Positive Shuttle-Motions for Looms; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or" reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates particularly to positive shuttle-motions for looms for weaving textile or other fabrics, and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of' parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
The object ofthe invention is to provide for the proper reciprocation of a shuttle across the loom 5 and to this end the invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a shuttle-body and reciprocating carrying-arms, of a movable trigger-frame which operates in guides in the shuttle-body, and which, at each stroke in either direction, first serves to unlock the shuttle at one end from one carryinga-rm and then to lock the opposite end to the opposite carrying-arm, both operations being automatic, and both being made with each stroke.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a plan view of the shuttle-body and trigger-frame connected thereto; and Fig. 2, a side elevation, partly in section, of the shuttle and its carrying-arms, the shuttle being locked to the left-hand carrying-arm, and the devices in the act of releasing the shuttle from the right-hand carrying-arm, the body of the shuttle and portions of the arms being in elevation.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, A represents the shuttle-body, having ends or shanks a, each of which is provided with a recess, c, having an abrupt or vertical bearing-side, as shown. In a guideway, b, formed in `the shuttle-body A, operates the' trigger-frame B, held in said guide by a screw, b', operating in a slot, 1r, at each shuttleshank.
It is not thought necessary to show the carrying-arms and their actuating mechanism in full; but in order that the operation ofthe devices may be fully understood, reference is made to Patents Nos. 153,693 and 164,924, in which such mechanism is fully illustrated and described. My devices are applicable to either of the actuating devices shown in said patents.
C and C represent the hollow reciprocating arms, in each of which, at c, is secured a spring-catch, D, having hook d, and abutting 6 5 end d', the hook being provided with an incline, di, which operates against a corresponding incline, ai, upon the end of each shuttleshank a. The trigger-frame is of such length that when it is moved to one side, so as to cover one of the recesses, cf, at the end of its stroke it leaves the other recess open to receive the locking-hook of a carrying-arm. rIhe shuttle being locked to and carried by the reciprocating bar C, the first action of' the arm or bar C, as the arms C and C approach each other, is to have the abutting head d of the springcatch D in the said arm C to strike against the end of the trigger B and force it over until -the opposite end acts against the incline d of 8o the catch D in the arm C, and forces the hook d out of the recess a at that end of the shuttle. The continuation of the same stroke locks the arm or bar C to the shuttle, as shown in Fig. 2. On the separating of the arms or bars C and C the shuttle will then move with the arm or bar C, as will be understood. By this construction and adaptation of the trigger I obviate the necessity of' shifting-levers or other mechanism for unlocking the shuttle.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The shuttle-body A, having recesses a, and the reciprocating arms C C', having springcatches D, provided with hooks d d2, combined with the shifting trigger-frame B, as and for the purposes specified.
