Nrrnn ra'rns GEORGE XV. BOYNTON, OF VEST OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH H. BAKER, OF SAME PLACE.
WINDOW-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,836, dated January 8, 184.
Application filed October 10, 1883. (No model.)
To ali'whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BOYNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Screens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This inventionhas relation to improvements in window-screens; and it consists in the parti cular construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
Heretofore window-screens have been constructed in sections and connected together in various ways, some of which have the top and bottom rails of each'section grooved, so as to slide upon one another and be made adjusta ble for windows of different sizes.
My invention has for its object to so construct a window-screen in sections that the ends of the upper and lower slide-rails will be integral or made. solid with the vertical side bars, and the inner or free ends of the sliderails'connected by a staple or metal plate, to prevent them from coming apart, and allowing a free and easy sliding movement of the sections. These objects I accomplish by the means shown and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on lines 00 as of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the connecting-wires. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail view.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A and 13 indicate the two sections of the screens, the top and bottom or slide rails of which are composed of a solid strip, a, which are recessed, as shown at b, so that of the said recessed arms to hold them allin' frictional engagement.
E indicates the inner vertical rails of both sections, to which one side of the wire of each section is respectively connected. These rails E also serve as a stop for the sections when they are drawn out to their fullest eXtent, the shoulders 9 serving as stops when the sections are pushed together. The wire is connected to the frames by tacking or otherwise securing it to the vertical side rails and strips E of each section, respectively, after which the strips 1 are secured around the edges of th wire.
Without the employment of the connecting plates or staples c it will be readily seen that from the construction of the slide-rails the sections would be very easily damaged by their free ends falling apart.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The window-screen consisting of the sections A and B, having the upper and lower rails slotted and recessed, as shown, and provided with the shoulders g, the staples e, secured in the free ends of the recessed slide-rails to travel in the slots (1, and the stop-rails E, with the wire connected to sections, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I GEO. W. BOYNTON. lVitnesses:
HENRY A. LEAKIJ, C. T. J OHNS.
