6 Claims. or. 20-16) The invention relates generally to metal doors such as aluminum combination storm and screen doors, and more particularly to a door which is assembled or hung within its casing when shipped, so that the door is easily installed merely by attaching the casing over the edges of the doorin the jamb flange of the casing through which the straps pass, and after installation these slots are conspicuous every time the door is opened.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide an improved pre-assembled door and casing construction in which the temporary fastening means leaves no unsightly perforations in the door or casing, which is quickly and easily installed by unskilled persons without special tools, and in which the temporary fastening means facilitate installing the door and casing in the doorway opening.
Further objects include the provision of improved temporary fastening means having a minimum number of parts which utilize predrilled installation screw holes in the casing.
Other objects will appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings and defined in the appended claims. Various modifications and changes in details of construction are embraced within the scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the improved pre-assembled door and casing in readiness to be mounted in a doorway opening.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation showing one of the temporary fastening clips for securing the door and easing together in proper relation.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan sectional view, partly broken away, as on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, showing the door and casing positioned in a doorway opening.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 3, showing the temporary fastening clips removed and the casing permanently mounted in the doorway opening.
As shown in Fig. 1, the door may have several panels, 10 and 11 being transparent glass panels, and panel 12 being translucent glass or metal. The frame members of the door and casing may be extruded aluminum. The side door frame members 13 and 14, and top and bottom door frame members 15 and 16 preferably have the usual mortised joints, as do the sash members 17 and 18 for the glass panels 10 and 11.
Referring to Fig. 3, the door frame members may be of rectangular box construction in cross section with beveled sash retaining flanges 20 extending along their inner edges for abutting the outer faces of the sash members 17 and 18. The inner faces of the sash mem bers are detachably engaged by clips 21 attached to the inner sides of the frame members 13, 14, 15 and 16 by screws 22. Thus one or both of the sash. panels 10 and 11 may be quickly and easily replaced with a screen panel of the same size. The sash members 17 and 18 are preferably of double channel form in cross section, as shown, and the glass panel is received and glazed therein in a usual manner.
The casing comprises extruded aluminum side bars 23A and 23B and a head cross bar 24, which may have-a 2 cross section adapted for fitting within and overlapping the outer edges of the doorway opening within which the door is to be hung. The 2 bars. each have a jamb portion 25 connected to an inturned flange 26 at its inner edge and an outturned .flange27 for overlapping the edge of thedoorway opening. The flange may have longitudinal ribs 28 on its inner surface for abutting the marginal wood members29 forming the doorway, and longitudinal grooves 30.011 its outer surface.
The door and casing thus far. described is more or less conventional, and per se forms no part of the present invention Preferably, the hinges 32 each have one leaf 33 attached to the front face of frame member 13 by screws 34, and the other leaf 35 extends through a slot in outer flange 27 and is attached to the back side. of the jamb portion 25 of the adjacent casing 23A by'rivets 36 to mount the door frame member 13 in proper spaced relation to the casing. Preferably, three rivet holes are provided in each leaf 35, and the middle hole is left open so that after the door is hung a screw 37 can be inserted therethrough into the wood member 29', as indicated in Fig. 3.
The improved temporary fastening means for securing the door to the casing members 23Bjand 24 in proper spaced relation, comprise the angular clips 40, each of which has one leg 41 secured to the outer surface .of flange 27 and the other leg 42 extending between jamb portion 25 and door frame member 141 and secured to the edge of the member 14.
The flanges 27 of casing members 23A, 23B and 24 are drilled at relatively short intervalsalong their outer edges with screw holes 43 for later receiving screws 44 to permanently attach the casing to the wood members 29 forming the doorway, and the legs 41 of the clips are adapted. to overlie thefianges and are drilled at 45 to register with holes 43 at selected intervals. Self-tapping screws 46 are driven through said registering holes and project a short distance beyond the back face of the casing members, as shown in Fig. 3.
The leg 42 of each clip 40 has an offset flange portion 47 at its front end and an outturned offset flange 48 at its rear end to space the door frame member 14 the proper predetermined distance from the jamb portion 25 of the casings 23B and 24. The leg 42 is provided with a hole 4-9 through which a self-tapping screw 50 may be inserted and screwed through the edge flange 14' of door frame member 14. j
J As shown in Fig. 1, two of the clips 40 may be used to temporarily secure the upper door frame member ls improper spaced relation to the upper casing member at preedrilled holes 43, and: three clips 4d to temporarily secure the door frame member 14 in proper spaced relation to the casing member 23B. Gbviously, the number of clips used may be varied depending upon the size of the door. The two screws 46 and 50 tightly secure each clip 40 to the door and casing and the clips rigidly secure the casing members 23B and 24 to the door frame in proper spaced relation, while the hinges secure the casing member 23A to the door frame member 13 in proper spaced relation. Thus, the door is hung on the casing for shipment.
, The installation procedure is simply to center and pre-assembled or pre- 'wedges under the door to raise it above the sill.
23A. Thescrews 46 are now removed from the clips 40 and the door swung outwardly, as indicated in Fig. 4,
whereupon the clips are removed from the door frame by removing screws 50. These screws 50 are then replaced in the door frame to cover their tapped holes, .and screws 44inserted through the holes 43 from which the screws 46 were removed. With the door swung open, the screws 37 are now inserted through the middle rivet holes of the hinge leaves 35 and the attached jamb portion 25 of the casing 23A to more solidly mount the hinge side of the casing in the wood of the doorway. It will be seen that a simple and inexpensive pre-hung door is provided by the present invention, without in any way marring or perforating the door casing with the temporary fastening means securing the door and easing together, and the deor is quickly and easily installed by unskilled persons without special tools.
What is claimed is:
1. In a pre-assembled door and casing having a casing bar hinged to one side of the door and easing bars extending along the other side and top of the door, said casing bars having jamb portions and outer flanges .angular thereto, means temporarily securing said other side and top of said door to the adjacent casing bars in properly spaced relation thereto, said means comprising angular clips having one leg overlying and secured to said 'outer flange of said adjacent casing bar and the other leg extending between said adjacent casing bar and said door and secured to the inner edge of said door.
2. In a pre-assembled door and easing having a casing bar hinged to one side of the door and easing bars extending along the other side and top of the door, said casing bars having jamb portions and outer flanges angular thereto, said outer flanges having pre-drilled holes at intervals along their edges for receiving screws to attach the casing bars to a doorway, means temporarily securing said other side and top of said door to the adjacent casing bars in properly spaced relation thereto, said means comprising angular clips havingone leg overlying and secured to said outer flange of said adjacent casing bar through one of said pre-drilled holes and the other leg extending between said adjacent casing bar and said door and secured to the inner edge of said door.
3. In a pro-assembled door and easing having a casing bar hinged to one side of the door and casing bars extending along the other side and top of the door, said casing bars having jamb portions and outer flanges angular thereto, means temporarily securing said other side and top of said door to the adjacent casing bars in properly spaced relation thereto, said means comprising angular clips having one leg overlying and secured. to said outer flange of said adjacent casing bar and the other leg extending between said adjacent casing bar and said door and secured to the inner edge of said door, said other leg having an offset flange to space the door at a predetermined distance from the jamb portion of said casing bar.
4. In a pre-assembled door and casing having a casing bar hinged to one side of the door and easing bars extending along the other side and top of the door, said casing bars having jamb portions and outer flanges angular thereto, said outer flanges having pre-drilled holes at intervals along their edges for receiving screws to attach the casing bars to a doorway, means temporarily securing said other side and top of said door to the adjacent casing bars in properly spaced relation thereto, said means comprising angular clips having one leg overlying and secured to said outer flange of said adjacent casing bar through one of said pre-drilled holes and the other leg extending between said adjacent casing bar and said door and secured to the inner edge of said door, said other leg having an offset flange to space the door at a predetermined distance-from the jamb portion of said casing bar.
5. In a pre-assembled door and casing having a casing -bar hinged to one side of the door and casing bars extending along the other side and top of the door,'said casing bars having jamb portions and outer flanges angular thereto, said outer flanges having pre-drilled holes at intervals along their edges for receiving screws to attach the casing bars to a doorway, means temporarily securing said other side and top of said door to the adjacent casing bars in properly spaced relation thereto,
said means comprising angular clips each having one leg extending between said adjacent casing bar and said door and secured to the inner edge of said door, the other leg overlying said outer flange of said adjacent casing bar, and a temporary attaching screw inserted through said other leg and screwed through one of said pre-drilled holes, said screw projecting beyond the rear face'of said outer flange for being embedded into the marginal members of said doorway.
6. In a pre-assembled door and easing having a casing bar hinged to one side of the door and casing bars extending along the other side and top of the door, said casing bars having jamb portions and outer flanges angular thereto, said outer flanges having pro-drilled holes at intervals along their edges for receiving screws to attach the casing bars to a doorway, means temporarily securing said other side and top of said door to the adjacent casing bars in properly spaced relation thereto, said means comprising angular clips each having one leg extending between said adjacentcasing bar and said door and secured to the inner edge of said door, said one leg having an offset flange tot-space the door at a predetermined distance from the jamb portion of said adjacent casing bar, the other leg overlying said outer flange of said adjacent casing bar, and a temporary attaching screw inserted through said other leg and screwed through one of said pre-drilled holes, said screw projecting beyond the rear face of said outer flange for being embedded into the marginal members of said doorway.
