COMPOUND METAL- WORKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,775, dated January 8, 1884. Application filed May 9, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS J. Bron, of Vernon, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mechanical Powers; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is a double or combined lever and eccentric power for punches, shears, presses, and the like. It is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, portions of the sides being broken away to show the working parts. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the tool-holder and block.
In these figures the form of frame A stands for any suitable frame. In it is pivoted an eccentric, B, provided with lever or handle Z). A second eccentric, O, is pivoted on a bolt, 0, which slides in slots in the sides and passes through a tenon of the said eccentric. A tool-holder, D, is pivoted at its rear end on the same boltc, this end being niortised or slotted to receive the tenon of eccentric C. The forward end of holder D is recessed in any suitable way to receive a punch or other tool, (I. The slots for the bolt 0 are horizontal, to give horizontal movement to holder D. On the side of the frame is a lever, E, pivoted also on bolts 0 and fulcrumed on pin e, set in the frame and passing through the slot in the lever. The upper end of leverE is connected to lever or handle of eccentric B by means of bar E. On the other side of the frame A the arrangement of lever E and bar F is duplicated. A suitable die or block, G, preferably adjustable and removable, is provided in the frame in front of the tool cl. It may be formed to slide in a dovetail groove and have a cutting-edge, or be perforated, or have a smooth face, according to the tool used in holder D.
It will be observed that line ;1 is longer than .r-that is to say, the high parts of the eccentrics are brought into action by pushing the handle in direction of the arrow, and by this movement the holder D is forced forward toward G. The same movement pushes the upper ends of lever E in the same direction. Reverse movement brings the low part of the eccentrics into action and shortens the dis tance between the pivots of the eccentrics. This permits the levers to draw back the holder D and tool (1. Thus the levers add their force to that of the eccentric in the forward movement, and in the reverse pull back the holder and tool, and at the same time push eccentric B. The bolt 0 should be stout, as it bears the strain both of eccentric and levers.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with the frame having suitable fixed die or tool, of the eccentric B, provided with a handle, the eccentric O, pivoted on sliding bolt, the tool-holder connected also to said bolt, and suitable connecting devices, whereby the holder and eccentric O are drawn back, all substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the frame having suitable die or tool, G, of the eccentric B, having handle, eccentric G, pivoted with holder D on sliding bolt, the levers E, and connect ing-bar F, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in thcpresence of two subscribing witnesses.
NICHOLAS .I. RICE.
