- E. HESTER.
JOINERS MARKING GAGE.
No. 291,728. Patented Jan. 8, 1884.
INVENTOR.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT @FFIQE.
EBENEZER HESTER, OF UNIONVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
JOINERS MARKING-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,768, dated January 8, 1884,
Application filed November 26,1583.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENEZER Hnsrnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Unionville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joiners Marking-Gages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved joiners marking-gage. Fig. 2 is a section on line 00 m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail View of. the screw securing the gage-rod in its block.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to marking-gages for joiners and carpenters use; and it con sists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a block having a transverse perforation, B, in which a rod, C, slides. The outer end of this rod is provided with a small wheel, D, journaled upon the end of the same, which wheel may either have a smooth or serrated edge, and serves to mark in the surface of the lumber, as the rod is adjusted in the block or fence, the distance between the fence and the marker-wheel, the fence being slid along the edge of the lumber to be scribed, and the marker-wheel scribing the line in the same manner as with the usual marking-gage. The rod may be adjusted in the perforation in the fence by means of ascrew, E, passing down (X0 model.)
through a vertical perforation, F, passing at the side of the transverse perforation and slightly entering its periphery at one side, and the screw has a recess, G, at the side facing the transverse perforation, corresponding to the periphery of the same, and a thumb-nut, H, upon its upper end, by means of which the screw may be drawn upward, bringing the lower end of the recess to bear against the side of the rod, wcdging the rod firmly in the perforation. In this manner it will be easily understood that the gage may be adjusted to scribe at any distance from the fence, the rod being preferably graduated to enable the person using it to read the distance, and the wheel will be less apt to be guided by the grain of the wood in marking with the same, and thus make a false mark, than the usual markingpoint, while the recessed screw will wedge the rod firmly in the perforation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, in a inarkinggage, of a block or fence having a transverse perforation and avertical perforation intersecting the periphery of the transverse perforation, a rod sliding in the transverse perforation and hav ing a marker at its end, a screw fitting in the vertical perforation having a concave or recess in its side, and a thumb-nut fitting upon the end of the screw, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EBENEZER I-IESTER.
