JOHN P. GRISCOM, OF POTTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CRANK-PIN SLIDE OF DIRECT-ACTING STEAM-PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,720, dated January 8, 1884:.
Application filed November 16, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN P. GRISCOM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pottsville, Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in (lrankdfin Slides of Direct Action Steam Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the crank-pin slides of that class of direct-action steam-pumps in which the stroke of the piston-rods is limited by the cranks of a crank-shaft; and the main object of my invention is to so construct crankpin slides that they can be readily removed from the crank-pins and guides without disturbing the crank-shaft, a further object being to readily set up the bearing of the cranlrpin and the plates of the slide.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are diagrams showing the class of steampumps to which my invention relates; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the crank-pin slide; Fig. 4, a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 5 an end view looking in the direction of the arrow. Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, which represent in outline a duplex direct-acting steam-pump, A A are the two steam-cylinders, and B B the two pump-barrels; D D, the two pistonrods, and E E the two cross-heads, each of which has vertical guides for a slide, G-one slide for receiving the pin of one crank, and the other for receiving the pin of the other crank of a crank-shaft, H. These slides have heretofore been so constructed that in order to remove them from the pins and guides when repairs were required it became necessary to raise the entire crank-shaft from its bearings a difficulty which my invention has been mainly designed to obviate.
Referring to Figs. 3, 4, and 5, one portion of the bearing for the crank-pin X is in the body M of the slide, the other portion of the hearing being in the block N, which is adjustable in a recess formed in the said body, and is confined thereto by a follower, P, and stud-bolts a a, which are screwed into the body, pass through lugs d d on the follower, and are provided with nuts 6 6, so that the bearing-block N can be set up when necessary. There are opposite side plates, R B, one adjacent to each edge of the body M, these plates being adapted to the guides of the cross-head, and each plate having lugs f f and it h overlapping the ends of the body, so that the latter can have no longitudinal movement independently of the plates. Between these plates and the edges of the body intervene taper keys TT, through the heads it of which passes a stud-bolt, U, screwed into or otherwise secured to thebody, the bolt being provided with nuts w, by the adjustment of which the plates can be set up to the guides whenever such a proceeding becomes necessary. The taper keys are narrower than the body M, and extend into grooves in the same, as will be seen by the perspective view, Fig. 3, and as the keys fit snugly, one between the lugs ff of one plate and the other between the lugs ff of the other plate, the keys perform the additional duty of maintaining the said plates in their proper lateral position on the body.
When it becomes necessary to remove the lb0"G-Cl6SC1lbd slide from the crank-pin X, the nuts 0 are first detached from the stud-bolts a, after which the follower P and block N can be withdrawn from the body in one direction, and the body M, with its keys and plates, may be moved along the guides of the cross-head in the contrary direction, and finally withdrawn from the said cross head.
The guides of the cross-head may be constructed to be set up against the slide, in which case the side plates, R R, and taper keys will be dispensed with, the remaining parts of the slide, however, remaining the same for their ready withdrawal from the crank-pins without disturbing the crank-shaft.
Devices other than those shown for adjusting the taper keys will readily suggest themselves to expert mechanics.
I claim as my invention- 1. A cross-head slide in which the body M and block N are combined with the follower P, and with bolts for confining the follower to the body and for adjusting the said block N, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the body M. the plates R R, and taper keys T T with devices for the adjustment of the said keys, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the body M of the In testilnonywhereof Ihave signedmy name slide and the plates R R with the taper keys to this specification in the presence of two '1 T, having heads t, that of one key overlapsubscribing witnesses. ping the other, and with a stud-bo1t, U, sub- 5 stantially as described. JOHN P. GRISOOM.
4. The combination of the body M of the slide, the adjustable taper keys adapted to \Vitnesses: grooves in the edges of the body, and the J. H. FISTER, plates R R, having lugs between which fit the MORGAN FEED. 10 said keys, substantially as set forth.
