SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,707, dated January 8, 1884.
Application lcd JunerQS), 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we,JoHN C. Fri-:ck and WILsoN HERRING, citizens of the United States, residing at Stewartsville, in the county of Posey and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Flue and Pipe Velder and Fitter, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to machines for welding and fitting boiler-lines; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, having for their object to produce a device which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general eicieney, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure lis a plan view of our improved machine. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view on .the line xx in Fig. l.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designates the frame of the machine, which may be of any suitable construction. The said frame has suitable bearings for the main shaft B, which is equipped with a y-wheel, C, and with a beltwheel, crank, or other suitable means for receiving motion, which may be either by hand or from steam or other power. One end of the shaft B projects laterally from or beyond the side of the frame A, and carries a gearwheel, D.
E is an arm or shaft extending laterally from the frame, parallel to the shaft B, and forming a mandrel, upon the end of which the tubes to be welded and fitted are in practice to be ad- 4o justed. The end of the arm E which forms the mandrel proper is provided with a collar,
G, adjustable upon the said mandrel by means of aset-screw,I-I. rIhe said collar serves to regulate the point to which the tubes may be adjusted upon the mandrel, so that the lap or joint shall always come directly under the welding-rollers.
I is a gear wheel or pinion, mounted to revolve upon the shaft or arm E, and meshing 5o with the gear-wheel D, to which reference has been made above. The front side of the pinion I is provided with boxes J J, in which are pivoted arms or levers, K K, extending forwardly over the mandrel and rearwardly through slots L in the pinion I, as shown. Of these arms or levers, one or more may be employed. For different uses a different number will be found most desirable and useful, and we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves in this respect. The front ends of oo the arms or levers K are providedwith rollers M, working against the mandrel, and forming the welding-rollers of the device. The inner or rear ends of the said arms or levers are likewise provided with rollers N, working against a conical sleeve, O, sliding upon the inner end of the arm or shaft E in rear of the gear-wheel I, as shown. Theinner end of the conical sleeve O has an arm or bracket, P, which is connected pivotally with one end of 7o a lever, Q, fulcrumed at V upon a bracket extending laterally from the frame. By means of the saidV lever the sleeve O may be moved forwardly or rearwardly upon the arm or shaft f E, thus forcing the front ends of the levers K, carrying the welding-rollers,toward the mandrel, or permitting them to move away from thelatter, as may be desired.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The tubes to be welded or fitted are adjusted upon the mandrel in such a manner as to bring the lap or joint directly beneath the welding-rollers M, which may be easily done by properly adjusting the collar G. Power is then applied to the shaft B, carrying the gear-wheel D, whereby motion is transmitted to the pinion I, carrying the welding-arms. The rollers at the front end of the latter are then, by the mechanism described, forced into contact with the tube with any desired degree of pressure, thus accomplishing the desired work speedily and in a uniform and satisfactory manner.
IVe claim as' our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a machine for fitting and welding boilertubes, the combination of a shaft or mandrel, a wheel mounted to revolve upon the same, arms or levers mounted in boxes upon the face of said wheel and extending rearwardly IOO through slots in the same, Welding-rollers upon the front ends of said levers, friction-rollers upon the rear ends of the same, a conical sleeve adjustable upon the shaft or mandrel beneath the friction -rol1ers, and suitable operating mechanism, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine for fitting and Welding boilertubes, the combination of a shaft or mandrel, a Wheel mounted upon the same, and having arms or levers provided with welding-rollers at their front ends, mechanism for forcing the same against the mandrel, and a sleeve or collar adjustable upon the said mandrel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the shaft or mandrel, the Wheel journaled upon the same, and providedwith arms or levers having friction-rollers at their inner ends, the conical sleeve having an arm or bracket at its inner end, and a lever connected pivotally with the said arm or bracket, and fulcrunied upon a bracket eX- tending laterally from the frame, as set forth.
4. Inamachineforttingandweldingboilertubes, the combination of a frame, a main shaft extending laterally from said frame and carrying a gear-Wheel, a shaft or mandrel extending' laterally from the frame, parallel to the main shaft, a pinion mounted upon the said mandrel and meshing with the gear-wheel upon the main shaft, arms or levers mounted in the said pinion, and having Welding-rollers at their front ends and friction-rollers at their rear ends, a collar adjustable upon the mandrel in front of the pinion, a conical sleeve adjustable in rear ofthe pinion beneath and between the friction-rollers, and alever arranged to operate the said sleeve, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOI-IN 'GOALMAN FLECK.
WILSON HERRING. Vitnesses:
