' all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, CHARLES W. .VAN AL- sTINE, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vater- Meters, of which the following is a specification. I i
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable arm for regulating the speed of the counting-gear to correspond with the amount of water passing through the meter, and thereby compensate for the wearing of the arm be tween the actuating-piston heads, or parts in contact, so as to accurately register the quan city of water passing through the meter, as hereinafter explained; and it consists1 in the construction, combination, and arrangement of an adjustable arm, connected with the registering mechanism, and actuated by the re ciprocating double-headed piston, as hereinafter more fully described, andset forth in the claims. i

A represents the outer shell or case of a piston water-meter, provided with an inlet, 13, and outlet 0, by which the meter may be connected with the waterpipes, as usual. \Vithin the said shell A, whichis cylindric, is placed the reciprocating piston, having heads E, which fit within the cylinder A, and
are connected together centrally by a neck,
F, of smaller diameter. Now, in order that the water passing through the meter may be accurately measured through the action of valves and the reciprocation of the said piston E F, an arm, H, having one end connected to the lower end of the vertical actuatingshaft rection until the said piston reached the end of its stroke, which movement of the said arm H would partially rotate the said vertical shaft L, it being provided with suitable pawland-ratchet-gear mechanism or registering mechanism, as heretofore, whereby the continuous rotation of said shaft is kept up as long as the water flows through the meter, causing said piston to reciprocate. The constant reciprocation of the said piston when the meter is in action causes the piston-heads E E, or contacting-faces thereof with the said head end N of the arm H, to become worn, thus reducing the extreme movements of the head end of the said reciprocating arm, and consequently a less rotation of the actuatingshaft L, thus inaccurately registering the quantity of water flowing through the meter. I provide a simple means whereby suchi wear may be easily compensated for, or whereby such movement of the piston and actuatingarm may be adjusted, so that the registering mechanism shall accurately indicate the quantity of water passing through the meter at all times. The said arm H is provided with an adjustable oval head, N, provided with a slot, P, and a confiningscrew, R, which passes into the said arm H, and the under surface of its head has a bearing upon the upper face of the said head N, so as to hold the parts in position. The rim or projecting flange upon the under side of the head is provided with a dovetail groove, and the end portion of said arm H is fitted therein, whereby the said head portion N may be adjusted thereon, so as to render the lever longer or shorter, as occasion may require. It will be evident that the said arm H may be made adjustable at the opposite end portion, or at any desired point between the extreme ends, and thereby accomplish the same result; but I prefer the construction shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination, with the reciprocating piston E F, of the actuating-arm H, having adjustable disk N, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
