(Cl. 101-213) The present invention relates to a simple, practical and economical printing device which is expressly constructed to be mounted on the frame of a wrapping paper dispenser wherein the paper is put up for use in rolled form, the free end thereof beingpulled-out for use from beneath a cutter bar as is commonly done at store meat'counters and the like.

More specifically the invention pertains to an easyto-use simpleprinting roller and inking roller therefor incorporated in a self-contained attachment, whereby to provide means through the medium of which the operator or user thereof may speed up and ease the everyday problem of providing suitable identification and advertising on packages which are being wrapped and processed or prepared for locker andhome .freezer customers.

In carrying out a preferredembodirnent of the invention the stated printing attachment when properly used will enable the user thereof toiwrap and label in a single operation, the printingor labeling being. done as the paper is pulledfrom the roll for-wrapping purposes.

Briefly summarized, a preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a suitable.adapterbracketwhich is bolted or otherwise mountedorr'the'usual inverted U- shaped frame of the wrappingv paper'dispenser and is provided with supporting pins. A simple carrier frame is provided and this has side members which are longitudinally slotted and are slidably mounted on said supporting pins. The lower portion of the frame is provided with a freely rotatable printing roller and above this with an inking roller. The printing roller is such that the letter and numeral type are insertable and removable and easy to set-up, depending on the particular marking required.

Other objects, features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying sheet of drawings.

Figure l is a fragmentary view in elevation of significant portions of the Wrapping paper roll holder and dispenser and shows the marker or printing attachment and how it is constructed and mounted for use.

Figure 2 is a view at right angles to Figure 1, that is, a view observing Figure 1 in a direction from left to right and with portions appearing in section and showing the details of the attachment with greater particularity.

Figure 3 is a section of a fragmentary nature taken on the vertical line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.

Figure 4 is an enlarged view of'the type holding and printing roller.

The dispensing device is characterized by a drum 6 having journals 8 mounted for rotation in bearings provided therefor in the uprights 10 of an inverted U-shaped paper dispenser frame 12. The top bar or frame mem- 2.. ber is denoted at 14. The usual cutter bar is denoted at 16. The convolutions of the roll of wrapping paper are denoted by the numeral 18.

The invention comprises a'simple and expedient marker or so-called printing device. More specifically, it is an attachment such as lends itself to use on the frame 12. The attachment itself is characterized by a simple elongate frame 20 and an adapter and attaching bracket 22. The latter is substantially L-shaped and has a horizontal short arm 24 which is superimposed on the frame member 14 and bolted thereto by way of a bolt 26' and wing nut 28. The long arm 30, which is vertically disposed and inclined is provided across its rear side with a pair of spaced parallel. fixed rounds 32. These rounds 32 are welded or otherwise secured in place so that the end portions project as at. 34 and extend through elongated slots or keyways 36 provided therefor in the spaced parallel frame members 38. The frame members are connected by spacers 40. which in turn have heads or the like 42 for assembling purposes. Any number of spacers and connectors may be provided. Several are shown in the drawings. The lower ends of the frame members 38 are provided with lengthwise notches 44, which open through the lower ends of the members, these notches serving to accommodate'trunnions 46 provided on the ends of the journaling pin or axle 48. It

is on this pin or axle that the printing roller or drum 50 is mounted for free rotation. The peripheral surface 52 has grooves or channels 54 (Figv 4) therein which serve to accommodate the insertable and removable changeable type 56. This type may be letters, numerals, emblems and so on. The inking roller, which may be of any appropriate construction, is denoted at 58 and it has trunnions 60 journaled in fixed bearing holes provided therefor in the'frame members 38 in the manner shown. The printing roller has endless ring-like members on the opposite end portions thereof. These members have their outer marginal or peripheral surfaces milled at 62 to provide traction members. These traction members ride on the wrapping paper and as the free end of the paper is pulled off of the roller in an obvious manner for wrapping up bundles and similar purposes the motion of the paper imparts rotary motion to the printing roller 64.

The frame 20 is slidable on the pins 34 carried by the attaching bracket and the frame slants downwardly toward the roll of paper and rides down under the forces of gravity to continually apply the inking roller to the printing roller. In practice, the type used will be maintained on a type holding board in which the letters or members are racked and systematically kept for convenience of use. Usually the marking will provide the date and the name of the customer and such other identification media as is usually employed when processing wrapped packages for home freezer customers.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. In combination, a stationary dispenser frame, a roll of paper mounted on said frame, a printing and marking roller resting on the outermost convolution of the roll of paper, means for rotatably and removably supporting said printing roller, said means including, in its over-all make up, an attaching bracket secured to said dispenser frame, and further including a vertically elongated frame having longitudinally slotted spaced parallel frame members, said brackets having a portion confined between said parallel frame members and provided with stationary pins,said pins having end portions protruding through the respective slots in said frame members, said slotted frame being'freely slidable on the end portions 'of said pins and beingvmovable toward the roll of paperunder the forces of gravity, and said printing .roller being provided with circum ferential grooves for removable reception of insertable and removable printing type and the end portions of the roller having integral. outstanding ring-like members the peripheral surfaces of which are milled and adapted to have friction driving contact with the convolutions of paper. .J

2. An attachment for a wrapping paper roll holder and dispenser comprising a single one-piece L-shaped bracket having a short arm designed and adapted to be removably mounted on the frame of said dispenser and having an upstanding long arm provided with transversely fixed longitudinally spaced rounds fastened to one side of said long arm and having ends projecting beyond the respective lengthwise edges of said long arm and providing frame mounting pins, a frame of vertically elongated and narrow in form having spaced parallel interconnected frame members, said long arm being interposed between said frame members, said frame members having elongated lengthwise slots, the slotted portions of the frame members being slidingly mounted on the projecting ends of said mounting pins, a readily attachable and removable printing roller having journals, the extreme lower ends of the frame members having lengthwise notches in which said journals are mounted for floating rotation, and an inking roller mounted for rotation between the frame members and having a peripheral surface cooperating with the peripheral surface of said printing roller, said printing roller having circumferential grooves for reception and retention of insertable and removable printing type, end portions of said roller having outstanding ring-like traction members with peripheral surfaces milled to facilitate turn- 4 ing of the printing roller by traction contact with convolutions being withdrawn from a roll of wrapping paper.

3. An attachment for a wrapping paper roll holder and dispenser comprising a rigid one-piece adapter bracket L-shaped in form and embodying a short arm which is flat adapted to be bolted atop the bight portion of an inverted U-shaped dispenserframe, and also embodying an upstanding long arm which, in use, is adapted to extend upwardly at aninclination, upper and lower rounds affixed to one side of the long arm and extendingtransversely across and secured to said long arm, the end"portions of said rounds projecting beyond the longitudinal edges of said long arm and providing frame mounting pins; a frameof vertically elongated form having spaced parallel rigidly interconnected vertical frame members, said long arm being located in and spanning the space between the-frame members, said mounting pins extending through lengthwise slots pro.- vided therefor in the respective frame members, said frame being adapted to ride either up or downon said mounting pins, an inking roller mountedfor rotation in the space betweenlower portions of the frame members, said lower portions of said frame membershaving notches opening at lower end portions through the extreme lower ends of said frame members, and a readily applicable printing roller removably located in the space between the frame members and provided at its ends with outstanding axial journals, said journals being slidingly and rotatably mounted for self-adapting operation in their respective notches.
