UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JOHN SAMUEL HEIZER, OE RUSHVILLE, INDIANA.
APPARATUS FOR WARMING THE UPPER ROOMS OF BUILDINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,510, dated January 8, 1884.
Application filed June 30, 188 3. (No model.)
To all whom it 12mg concernha Be it known that I, JOHN S. HEIZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rushville, in the county of Bush and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Apparatus for Warming Upper Rooms in Buildings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to apparatus for warming the upper rooms of buildings; and it consists in certain improvements therein, as hereinafter described and claimed, the object of the invention being to utilize the escaping heat in the flues of chimneys by retarding its upward passage to a certain extent and cansing its radiation and passage into upper rooms.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a-vertical section, showing upper and lower rooms of a building and a chimney having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the box provided with fiuesherein described.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the upper, and B the lower, room of a building. 0 is the fireplace, and F the flue of the chimney. A metallic-box, E, having flanges e, is inserted in an opening in the wall, fitting therein, so that said box extends into the flue of the chimney and partly across the same. Within box E are vertical dues or drums a, extending from top to bottom and terminating in openings, so that said flues form passages through said box for smoke. The box E opens to the room designed to be heated, and is provided with a hollow cover or stopper, D,having a handle, f, for the purpose of closing the box when it is desired to shut off the heat from the room. Rearward of box E, and against the opposite wall of the chimney, are secured deflecting-plates d, these being formed to incline forward, so as to turn the column of smoke and products of combustion against and under the box E. A deflecting-plate, d, is also placed at the rear of the fire-place, and such may be fixed at intervals along the chimney-flue, as desired. By this construction, the passage of smoke and products of combustion up theflueFbeing considerably retarded, the box E becomes thoroughly heated, andthe stopper D being removed, a considerable amount of heat passes from the chimney into the room which would otherwise escape through the chimney.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A box having a front opening and provided with vertical fines or drums, substantially as shown, said box extending into and partially across the fiue of a chimney, in combination with one or more deflecting-plates, d, secured to the opposite side of the line, substantially as and for the purposes described.
I 2. In a room-heating device, the combination of the box E, having tubes or drums at, the closing cover or stopper D, the chimney or flue F, deflecting-plates d, fire-place O, and deflecting-plate d, all constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN SAMUEL HEIZER. YVitnesses:
FRANCIS M. KIELMAN, JOSHUA BLooMER.
