y, To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GATHARINE A. GniswoLn, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful `Improvement in Corset-Glasps, of which the following is a specification, reference being made `.to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face View of a detached part `of the front of one-half of a corset,`showing my new combinationwith the busk of a clampshield. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line x x, Fig. l; and Fig. 8 is a perspective `View of l gone of the end clamp-shields.

. It is well known that corset-busks heldin pockets formed in the edges of the divisions formed, in which the busk ct is secured, usually `by sewing the same permanently into the pocket both at the side edges and at the ends.

I prefer, however, to leave the pocket open at its outer edge, insert the busk edgewise into it, and securethe busk in place by eyelets or detachable studs. This method of connecting the busk to the corset I regard as new and patentable, and simultaneously herewith iile in the United States Patent Office a separate application for Letters Patent therefor. The clamp-shield here described is specially, but not ex clusively, applicable to such open pockets with their contained busks.

The clamp-shields intended to be applied at any points between the ends of the busks are formed of looped strips of sheet metal. Side y views of two such are given at b b, Fig. l, and an edge view in cross-section at b, Fig. 2.

The sides are perforated to receive a stud or eyelet for securing the parts together. A detachable stud is shown in said Fig. 2, the said stud consisting of two heads, c c', from the inner face of each of which projects a stud, one of them, d, being hollow and having inside curved leafsprings, as shown in Fig. 2, the other stud, d', havingat its outer fend a .sii'ghtgen largement, which, when it is forced into the hollow stud d, engages with said. springs, whereby the two parts cl and d are detachably held together. Preferably holes are made` in the busk corresponding to the holes in the shield, and the hollow stud d passed through the shield and the busk. The stud d is then forced into d, and the parts are thus detachably secured together. The detachable vstud must be used when the busk is to be removably held in the pocket-s open on their outer edge, as described.

I do not claim the described detachable stud,

the same not being my invention; nor do I limit myself to a detachable stud constructed as described. Any other suitable detachable stud may be used. The clamp-shields b b', `designed for the ends of the busks, are each preferably provided with a lip, one of which is seen at e, Fig. 3, that is formed onone of the edges of one ofthe iiat plates of the shield and turned up toward the opposite plate, so as to close that edge of the shield, as seen in said Fig. 3. When such shield is placed upon the end of the busk, the said lip covers the fabric that envelops the end of the body of the busk if the said end is so covered, or covers the naked en d of the saidbody if the fabric is not made to envelop said end. In either case the said lip forms a shield to protect the end of the busk against wear and-to retain it in its place` in the pocket. When the busk is placed in a closed pocket, the clamp-shields may be permanently attached by eyelets or common studs having heads on one end and being riveted down on the other. The studs or eyelets pass through the shields and busks andthe sides of the pockets and securely fasten them together.

In securing to the corset the clamp-shield at the end of the busk I prefer to pass the stud or eyelet through both the shield and the busk, as well as through the sides of the pocket; but, if desired, the busk may only just enter the clamp-shield, and the stud or eyelet pass not through the busk, but only through the shield and the sidesof the pocket.

but7 if desired, the perforated ends of the shield may extend beyond the inner edges of pocket and busk, and the stud or eyelet may pass through only the sides of the pocket and the shield.

That I elailn as my invention7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, in a eorset,with a busk7 a, inelosed in apooket thereinhaving the outer edge open, ot the clamp-shield b, secured to the said busk and corset by a detachable stud that passes through both, as and for the purpose described.

2. In a corset, the'eonibination, with the end of the busk a, inelosed in a pocket in the oor-V set7 'of the elampshield b', provided with the lip e, and secured to the corset by a stud or eyelet that passes through the sides of the pocket and the shield, as and for the purpose described.

3. In a corset, the combination, with a busk, a, in the pocket therein, of a shield, b', placed at the end of the husk, so that the end enters the shield, the latter being secured to the corset by a stud or eyelet that passes only through 2 5 the sides of the pocket and the shield7 as and for the purpose described.
