FAsTENiNe DEVICE FOR DRAFT-PINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,30?, dated January 1, 1884.
Application ined May s, i883. (No moan.)
To all whom it may oon/cern,.- l
Be it known that I, Josnrrr W. BAILEY, of Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Fastening Draft-Pins; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the saine, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in the combination of devices and appliances hereinafter specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View with the latch closed. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the latch opened.
Heretofore in the operation of horse-cars a difficulty has been experienced from the liability of the draft-pin which secures the evener to the draw-bar to work loose. It is the object of my invention to remedy this difficulty by providing simple and economicalmeans whereby said draft-pin `may be held firmly in place, while it may also be quickly and readily disengaged whenever it is desired to shift the evener or to remove the pin for any reason. I accomplish this object as follows:
In the drawings, A represents board of the car. y
B represents the draw-bar.
G represents the evener.
I) represents the draft-pin, constructed, as is usual, with an extended arm, for the ready operation of the driver, said pin being provided with a suitable shoulder, d, suitably located near the top.
E represents my improved fastening, consisting of the jaws e, rigidly secured to the bracket E', said bracket adapted to be secured,by means of bolts or otherwise, upon `the dashboard of the car. Near the outer end of the jaws they are suitably expanded to form the orifice e', said orifice communicating with the socket c2.
E2 is a latch pivoted between said jaws, and
the dashpreferably provided with a stopper, e3, adapt/I ed to close into the orilice e', the latch preferably being construeted with shoulders e4, for the ready operation of the latch.
' The operation` of the device is as follows: Thefastening may be readily secured upon the draft-pin by raising the latch and passing it over the top of the pin, the curved handle d being left with a suitable opening, d2, for this purpose. The fastening issecured tothe dashboard in such a position that the slot c2 will rest upon the shoulder d of the pin. The latch being closd, as shown in Fig. 2, it is evident that the engagement of the shoulder cl with the edges of the fastening will effectually prevent the pin from being raised or thrown out of engagement with the evener and the drawbar. Should it be desired to raise the pin, by opening the latch the pin may be drawn back out of the slot ci into the larger orice e', as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, the diameter ofthe orifice being larger than that ofthe shoulder d upon the draft-pin, and permitting the pinto be raised through said orifice; and when it is desired to secure the piu in position again the latch is closed behind it, the stopper c closing into the orifice c'.
The extending shoulders c* of the latch enable the driver to manipulate the latch 4with ease.
1. A fastening for securing draft-pins firmly in place, consisting of suitable embracing-jaws adapted to be secured to the dashboard, and
provided with the orifice c2, communicating with the expanded oriiice c', and, in combination therewith, a latch pivoted between said.
jaws, and adapted, when closed, to hold the draft-pin firmly in the oriiice e2, substantially as described.
` 2. Afastening foiI holding a draft-pin firmly in place, consisting of suitable jaws provided with the orifice e?, communicating with the expanded orifice c', and, in combination therewith, a latchvpivoted betwecnvsaid jaws, and provided with a stopper adapted to close into the orifice c2, the construction being such that when the latch is closed the draft-pin will 4be held firmly in the orifice ci, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a dash-board and ing the latch the pin may be drawn upward draft-pin provided with shoulders b, of a. fastthrough the orifice c', substantially as deening consisting of embracing-jaws provided scribed.
