Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a duplicating machine for selective printing of desired sections or lines of a printing form, and relates more particularly to a duplicating machine of the type in which selected printing sec: tions of a printing form are printed in adjacent positions on a copy sheet, although the printing sections may be spaced from each other on the printing form.
  • Duplicating machines of this type are known, in which an electromagnetic means urges a pressure roller against a printing roller which carries the printing form.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide a duplicating machine of this type which is of very simple construction and can be inexpensively manufactured.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide a duplicating machine of this type in which during each revolution of the printing roller, a selected first printing section is reproduced, whereas during each successive revolution of the printing roller successive different sections of the printing form are reproduced on the copy sheet adjacent the continuously repeated first printing section.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide a duplicating machine having shiftable selector means by which the machine can be set to repeated printing of selected sections of the printing form, or to automatic printing of different successive sections of the printing form.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide the manually operated portions of the selector members on the side of the machine from which the copy sheets are fed to the printing roller.
  • the present invention mainly consists in a selector mechanism for use with a duplicating machine which comprises a rotary printing roller, a printing form secured to the printing roller and having a plurality of printing sections, a rotary pressure roller cooperating with the printing roller, and operating means for moving the pressure roller to and from a printing position in close proximity to the printing roller.
  • Copy sheets fed into the printing line between the two rollers are transported by the turning rollers in the printing position of the rollers, but when the pressure roller is spaced from the printing roller, a holding means holds the copy sheet stationary, so that when the pressure roller is again moved to printing position, a spaced printing section of the printing form is printed on the copy sheet adjacent the first printed printing section.
  • the operating means include electromagnetic means which actuate the pressure roller to move to printing position when the electromagnetic means is energized.
  • the selector mechanism includes at least one rotary carrier; switch means mounted on the carrier and'having an engaging portion moving along a circular path during rotation of the carrier, 21 set of manually operable selector members arranged in a circle and being independently movable in axial direction of the carrier between an inoperative position, and an operative position projecting into the path of movement of the engaging portion of the switch means; and means connecting the carrier with the printing roller for rotation in timed relation so that each printing section of the printing form is located opposite the pressure roller when the associated selector member in operative position engages and actuates the switch means.
  • the switch means is electrically connected to the electromagentic means, and energizes the same'when actuated by a selector member during turning movement of the carrier. Since at the moment: in which any selector member closes the switch means and energizes the electromagnetic means, the respective printing section associated with the actuated selector member is located opposite the pressure roller, this selected printing section is printed when the electromagnetic means moves the pressure roller to printing position.
  • An important feature of the present invention is the mounting of the selector members for movement in axial direction of the rotary carrier whereby a radial movement of the actuated switch means is obtained.
  • a second rotary carrier which can be connected to the first carrier in a plurality of angularly displaced positions respectively associated with the printing sections;
  • Thesecond carrier also carries a switch means, so that the relative position between the two switch means on the two carriers can be varied as desired- Since eachselector member is movable to a position engaging both switch means, two different printing sections can be reproduced-on the copy sheet under control of a single selector member.
  • each selector member- is shiftable between a position engaging only one switch, another position engaging both switches, and a third position engaging only the other switch.
  • the two carriers are interconnected by a spring loaded stepping mechanism, which is automatically operated during eachrevolution of the carrier
  • the stepping mechanism etfects step-wise turning of one carrier relative to the other carrierwhen actuated. Consequently it is possible to reproduce the same printing section during each revolution of the carriers under the control of the switch means on the carrier which is driven, whereas difierent successive printing sections are reproduced 'on the copy sheet under the control of the switch means on the other carrier, such other carrier being step-wise turned at the end of each revolution.

RITZERFELD EI'AL Nov. 17, 1959 2 Sheets-Sheet g haw United States Patt DUPLICATING MACHINE FOR SELECTIVE PRINTING Wilhelm Ritzerfeld, Berlin-Dahlem, and Gerhard Ritzerfeld, BerIin-Grunewald, Germany The present invention is a continuation-in-part application of our co-pending application Serial No. 620,- 546, filed on November 5, 1956, now US. Patent No. 2,860,574.
The present invention relates to a duplicating machine for selective printing of desired sections or lines of a printing form, and relates more particularly to a duplicating machine of the type in which selected printing sec: tions of a printing form are printed in adjacent positions on a copy sheet, although the printing sections may be spaced from each other on the printing form.
Duplicating machines of this type are known, in which an electromagnetic means urges a pressure roller against a printing roller which carries the printing form.
It is one object of the present invention to overcome certain disadvantages of duplicating machines of this type, and to provide a duplicating machine which permits selective printing of sections of a printing form under.
control of manually operated selector members.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a duplicating machine of this type which is of very simple construction and can be inexpensively manufactured.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a duplicating machine of this type in which during each revolution of the printing roller, a selected first printing section is reproduced, whereas during each successive revolution of the printing roller successive different sections of the printing form are reproduced on the copy sheet adjacent the continuously repeated first printing section. 1
Another object of the present invention is to provide a duplicating machine having shiftable selector means by which the machine can be set to repeated printing of selected sections of the printing form, or to automatic printing of different successive sections of the printing form.
Another object of the present invention is to provide the manually operated portions of the selector members on the side of the machine from which the copy sheets are fed to the printing roller.
, With these objects in view, the present invention mainly consists in a selector mechanism for use with a duplicating machine which comprises a rotary printing roller, a printing form secured to the printing roller and having a plurality of printing sections, a rotary pressure roller cooperating with the printing roller, and operating means for moving the pressure roller to and from a printing position in close proximity to the printing roller. Copy sheets fed into the printing line between the two rollers, are transported by the turning rollers in the printing position of the rollers, but when the pressure roller is spaced from the printing roller, a holding means holds the copy sheet stationary, so that when the pressure roller is again moved to printing position, a spaced printing section of the printing form is printed on the copy sheet adjacent the first printed printing section.
In the duplicating machine according to the present 2 invention, the operating means include electromagnetic means which actuate the pressure roller to move to printing position when the electromagnetic means is energized.
The selector mechanism according to the present invention includes at least one rotary carrier; switch means mounted on the carrier and'having an engaging portion moving along a circular path during rotation of the carrier, 21 set of manually operable selector members arranged in a circle and being independently movable in axial direction of the carrier between an inoperative position, and an operative position projecting into the path of movement of the engaging portion of the switch means; and means connecting the carrier with the printing roller for rotation in timed relation so that each printing section of the printing form is located opposite the pressure roller when the associated selector member in operative position engages and actuates the switch means.
The switch means is electrically connected to the electromagentic means, and energizes the same'when actuated by a selector member during turning movement of the carrier. Since at the moment: in which any selector member closes the switch means and energizes the electromagnetic means, the respective printing section associated with the actuated selector member is located opposite the pressure roller, this selected printing section is printed when the electromagnetic means moves the pressure roller to printing position.
An important feature of the present invention is the mounting of the selector members for movement in axial direction of the rotary carrier whereby a radial movement of the actuated switch means is obtained.
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention a second rotary carrier is provided, which can be connected to the first carrier in a plurality of angularly displaced positions respectively associated with the printing sections; Thesecond carrier also carries a switch means, so that the relative position between the two switch means on the two carriers can be varied as desired- Since eachselector member is movable to a position engaging both switch means, two different printing sections can be reproduced-on the copy sheet under control of a single selector member.
Preferably,.each selector member-"is shiftable between a position engaging only one switch, another position engaging both switches, and a third position engaging only the other switch. V
In the preferred er n-boclimentv of the present invention, thetwo carriers are interconnected by a spring loaded stepping mechanism, which is automatically operated during eachrevolution of the carrier The stepping mechanism etfects step-wise turning of one carrier relative to the other carrierwhen actuated.
The novel features which are consideredas characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments When-read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which: I Figure 1 is a side View of .an embodiment of the present invention, partly shown .in'section, and one of the side walls of the machine being omitted for the sake of clarity; Y
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale and taken on line 2-2 in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a schematic view including a diagram showing the electric circuit of the apparatus.
Referring now to the drawing, and more particularly to Figure 1, a printing roller 1 is turnably' mounted on a shaft 3, and is driven from a motor, not shown, through a chain 6 passing over a chain wheel 4 which is secured to'printing roller 1 for rotation therewith. In a recess 81 .of. the printing roller 1, clamping means, not shown,- are mounted for clamping a printing form to the peripheral surface of the printing roller 1. The printing form is'a duplicating master sheet which has a plurality of printing sections Z1 to Z10. For example, printing section Z1 may be the heading of a printed text, and the other printing sections may contain lines of text.
A pressure roller 10 is mounted on a pair of pivoted supporting arms 82 for movement toward'and away from the printing roller, and is controlled by operating means which include a toggle'lev'er means 16, 17 which in the illustrated position hold the pressure roller 10 spaced from the printing roller, but are movable to a straightened position in which the pressure roller is in a printing position in close proximity to the printing roller and engaging the same, or the master sheet thereon along a printing line which is located in a plane passing through the axes of the rollers 1 and 10 as indicated in dash and dot lines in Fig. 1.
. Transporting rollers 22 and 23 feed the'copy sheet 21 from a table toward the holding means 72. A moistening device 83 is provided for moistening the copy sheet 21, as is required for 'hectographic duplicating. When a copy sheet reaches the printing line, it does not move because it is held by the holding means 72. When the pressure roller 10 is moved to its printing position, the copy sheet is engaged by the rollers 1 and 10 and transported. When the pressure roller 10 is again retracted the copy sheet stops due to the action of the holding means 72, while the printing roller continues its turning movement so that difierent printing sections Z1 to Z10 move to a position located opposite the -pressure roller 10. When the pressure roller 10 is moved to printing position, the respective printing section is printed on the copy sheet, and since the copy sheet remains stationary during the turning of the printing roller 1, the next selected printing section is printed adjacent to the first printed printing section on the copy sheet when the pressure roller is again moved to printmg position.
.Thevoperating toggle levers 16 and 17 are actuated by a rod 49 which is connected to the core of an electromagnetic means 28. When electromagnetic means 28 s energized, the pressure roller 10 moves to its printmg position.
- The circuit of the electromagnetic'means 28 is shown t in Figure 3 from which it is apparent that a source of alternating current supplies a transformer 72 whereupon the alternating current is rectified by a rectifier 73. If an electric connection is made between the rectifier and the electromagnetic means 28, the electromagnetic means will be energized, and the pressure roller will be moved to its printing position.
The energizing of the electromagnetic means is controlled by a selector device which is driven in timed relation with the printing roller 1. A bevel gear 61 is fixedly mounted on the printing roller 1, and drives through a meshing bevel gear 60 a shaft 59 which is mounted in bearings 59a. A first rotary carrier 57 includes a hub portion provided with two slip rings 65 and 66, anda flange portion 57a whose shape is best seen in 'Figure 2. The carrier 57 is fixedly connected to shaft 59, and performs the same number of revolutions as the printing roller 1. Carrier 57 carries a first switch means 55 which has a resilient engaging portion 55a.
' A second carrier 58 is mounted on shaft 59 -f01' m.-
ing movement relative to the first carrier 57, but is normally coupled to carrier 57 by a spring loaded stepping mechanism which includes a ratchet wheel 64, a stepping pawl 62 urged by a spring 71 into engagement with the coupling wheel 64, and controlled by a spring loaded pawl 63, and a spiral spring connected to carrier 58 and to shaft 59, and urging carrier 58 to turn relative to carrier 57. Such turning, however, is normally prevented due to the engagement between. pawl 62 which is mounted on carrier 57, and coupling wheel 64 which is mounted on carrier 58. A knob 58a is secured to carrier 58 and permits turning of the carrier 58 relative to carrier 57 by a manual operation.
Carrier 58 also has a hub portion provided with two slip rings 67 and 68, and a flange portion corresponding to the shape of flange 57a, and carrying a second switch means 56. The outermost engaging portions of switch means 55 and 56 are spaced the same radial distance from the axis of shaft'59.
The pair of slip rings 65, 66 is connected to thetwo contacts of spring means 55 by wires 84, and the contacts of switch means 56 are connected by wires 85 to slip rings 67 and 68. The slide contacts 65:: and 66a, and the slide contacts 67a and 68a are connected in parallel and are arranged in the circuit of electromagnetic means 28, as best seen in Figure 3. Therefore, closing of either switch 55, or switch 56, will energize electromagnetic means 28. A manually operated switch 74 is connected into the circuit in series with switch 55 and another manually operated switch 75 is connected in series with switch 56.
When both switches 74 and 75 are closed, actuation of both switches 55 and 56 will effect energization of electromagnetic means 28. However, byoperation of the respective switch 74 and 75, switches 55 and 56 can be selectively disconnected from the circuit so that electromagnetic means 28 will not energize when the respective disconnected switch 55, or 56 is closed.
A stationary support 52 is located adjacent carrier 53, and has arranged in a circle a plurality of guideways 52:: which extend in axial direction of shaft 59 and the carriers 57, 58. Each guideway 52a slidably supports a selector-member 51 which has a manually operated portion provided with a button located on the side of the support plate 52 which is remote from the carriers 57 and 58. Each selector member 51 carries a roller 51a which cooperates with the engaging portions 55a of the first and second switch means 55 and 56. Each selector member 51 is shiftable by a manual operation from the inoperative position shown in solid lines in Figure l to a plurality of operative positions shown in dash and dot lines in Figure 1. In the most advanced position, the roller 51a engages only the engaging portion of switch 55, in an intermediate position roller 51a engages the engaging portions of both switches 55 and 56, and in a third operative position the roller 51 may only engage the engaging portion of switch 56 during rotation of the carriers 57 and 58.
Arresting means are provided for arresting each selector member 51 in its positions, and preferably include a ball 53 urged by a spring 54 into recesses on the shank of the respective selector member 51. The number of recesses in the selector members corresponds to the number of desired operative positions, and one recess is provided for holding the respective selector member in its illustrated inoperative position.
A control member 69 is mounted on a stationary support shiftable between an inoperative position and an operative position shown in dash and dot lines in Figures 1 and 2. The control pawl 63 is engaged by control member 69 in its operative position when carrier 57 rotates. This results in a release of the ratchet pawl 62 from the ratchet wheel 64, and in turning of the carrier 58 relative to carrier 57 under the action of spring 7t). However, carrier 58 can only turn one step since control pawl 63 is immediately released by control member 69, and permits return of locking pawl 62 into its locking position engaging the ratchet wheel 64.
The stepping mechanism 62, 63, 64 is so designed that each angularly turned position of carrier 58 corresponds to a different printing section Z1 to Z10 on theprinting form 2.
In the same manner, each of the selector members 51 is associated with a different printing section Z1 to Z10 on the printing form.
The machine operates in the following manner:
If one, or several selector members 51 are manually shifted to the respective most advanced operative positions in which the roller or rollers 51a engage only the engaging portion of switch means 55, every time the engaging portion 55a is engaged by a roller 51a, the switch 55 is closed, and the electromagnetic means 28 is energized to effect movement of the pressure roller 10 to its printing position. Since carrier 57 rotatesat the same rotary speed as printing roller 1, 'a printing section selected by operation of the respective associated selectormember :1 is printed on the copy sheet. Thereupon the pressure roller is automatically retracted by spring means, not shown, and the copy sheet remains stationary until the next selected printing section Z is located opposite the pressure roller 10. At this moment switch means is again closed by another preset selector member 51, and the electromagnetic means is again energized so that the pressure roller 10 is shifted to printing position and the respective selected printing section of the printing form is printed on the copy sheet adjacent the first selected printing section. During this operation, the switch 56 is not actuated, and consequently can be disconnected by switch 75.
In another operative position of the selector mem bers, the roller 51a is located in the circular paths of both engaging portions of the two switches 55 and 56. Consequently, both switches will be simultaneously actuated by preset selector members 51. If control mem ber 69 is held in its inoperative position, the operation of the device will be the same as if only switch means 55 were actuated.
However, if control member 69 is set to its operative position, it engages the control pawl 63 shortly before the end of each revolution of printing roller 1 and carrier- 57, and effects temporary release of the coupling wheel 64 by locking pawl 62, so that carrier 58 is free to turn under the action of spring in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of carrier 57 which is indicated by the arrow D in Figure l. The design and construction of the stepping mechanism is such, that after each step, the spring 56 is spaced from spring 55 an angular distance which corresponds to the angular spacing of the selector members 51.
Consequently, assuming that switches 55 and 56 were aligned in axial direction during the first revolution of printing roller 1, only a single selected portion would be printed on the copy sheet assuming that only one selector member was previously set to its operative position engaging both switches 55 and 56. During the second revolution, carrier 58 is already shifted one step relative to carrier 57, and consequently the roller 51a will first engage switch 55, closing the same and effecting printing of the associated selected printing section, and will then engage the engaging portion of switch 56, closing switch 56, and effecting printing of the next following printing section of the printing form adjacent the imprint of the first selected printing section.
For example, if selector member 51 associated with the printing section Z1 is preset to operative position, only the printing section Z1 will be printed during the first revolution of the printing roller. During the second revolution, printing of the printing section Z1 will be repeated under control of switch 55, whereas printing section Z2 will be printed under control of switch 56.
During the next following third revolution of the printingroller, printing of the printing section Z1 will be repeated, but since carrier 58 has turned another step, the printing section Z3 will'be printed on the copy sheet under control of switch 56, and such imprint will'appear on the copy sheet adjacent the imprint of the printing section Z1.
Consequently the apparatus of the presentinvention permits printing of a common headportion Z1, together with successive lines of the printing form.
The knob 58a permits relative turning of the carrier 58 by a manual operation, so that lines of the printing form can be selected before each revolution of the printing roller. It is also possible to place the selector member 51 which is associated with the head portion of the printing form into its most advanced operative position actuating only switch 55 during each revolution, and to set several selector members 51 in the operative position engaging only switch 56 whereby several lines are printed on the copy sheet in addition to the head portion. .During this type of operation, the control member 69 remains in retracted inoperative position.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of duplicating machines differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a duplicating machine for selective printing of successive sections of a printing form, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention. 7
