United States Patent DRY SHAVER BLADE AND SUPPORT John F. (Cl. 30-43) This invention relates to a combination comprising a dry shaver blade and a support member for the blade, the combination constituting a sub-assembly in the construction of a dry shaver.
The illustrated dry shaver blade per se forms the subject matter of the copending U.S. patent application of Leo J. Wahl for Dry Shaver Blade, Serial No. 652,875, filed April 15, 1957.
One object of the invention is to provide a combination comprising a dry shaver blade and a support member therefor which easily can be assembled accurately in a dry shaver.
Another object is to provide such a combination wherein the support member imparts requisite structural rigidity to the dry shaver blade.
Another object is to provide such a combination wherein eccentricities or distortions experienced in mounting the support member in a dry shaver will not be communicated to the shaver blade.
Still another object is to provide a combination of a stationary dry shaver blade and a support member for the blade which is designed to accommodate a movable shaver blade and a drive finger for the movable blade.
Another object is to provide such a combination wherein the support member is effective for holding the blade and imparting proper rigidity thereto in connection with the process of lapping the inner surface of the blade.
Other objects, advantages and details of the invention will be apparent as the description proceeds reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein two forms of the invention are shown. It will be understood that the description and drawing are illustrative only and that the scope of the invention is to be measured by the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of a dry shaver mechanism embodying one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the combination comprising a dry shaver blade and a support member for the blade shown in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of a second form of combination of a blade and a support member for the blade, and
Fig. 5 is an end elevational view of the combination shown in Fig. 4.
Referring now to Figs. l-3 of the drawing, the illustrated dry shaver mechanism includes a core 6, a coil 7 and an associated armature 8. A drive finger 9 is mounted on the free end of armature 8.
The combination embodying the invention comprises a dry shaver blade 10 in the form of a channel member, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and a support member 11, also in the form of a channel member as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The two channel members hereinafter are sometimes referred to respectively as blade channel member 10 and support channel member 11,.
Blade channel member 10 includes web 12 and legs 13 and 14. Web 12 has a plurality of cutting apertures 15 between the end portions thereof.
In the Figs. 1-3 form of the invention, support member 11 is located inside of blade 10. The respective webs 16 and 12 of the channel members are spaced apart by a distance to accommodate between them a movable shaver blade 23 (Figs. 1 and 2). The channel members are secured together in suitable manner as by spaced welds 24 in the two sets of legs.
The blade-support combination or sub-assembly is secured in proper position in the dry shaver by means of mounting portion 20. As here shown, mounting portion 20 is anchored to core 6 by means of screws 26. As thus assembled, drive finger 9 extends through aperture 21 in the web of support channel member 11 and engages movable blade 23 in driving relationship.
The inner surface of web 12 of blade channel member 10 and the engaging outer surface of movable blade 23 are surfaces which are subjected to a lapping process so as to provide proper cutting relation, and it therefore is important that those surfaces, particularly the surface of Web 12, be free of distortion. This result is obtained in this invention through the provision of support member 11 which is substantially non-yielding. Thus, even though there is some irregularity in the surface on which mounting portion 20 is anchored, the irregularity is not communicated to the lapped surface of blade 10 due to the length and stiffness of mounting portion 20 and leg 17, as well as the sharp angle between leg 17 and web 16. This feature insures proper cutting relationship between the lapped surfaces of the fixed and movable blades.
The second form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is essentially the same as the first form with the exception that support channel member 30 is located outside of blade channel member 31 and that a larger aperture is provided in the support channel member. As shown, blade channel member 31 is the same as the previously described blade 10.
When the two channel members are assembled, web 32 of the support channel member engages the web of blade channel member 31. The two members are secured together in suitable manner as by welds 40 in the respective pairs of legs of the two members.
The Figs. 4-5 form of the invention gives requisite support to blade channel member 31, and the substantially non-yielding characteristic of mounting portion 35 of support channel member 30 insures that no distortions or irregularities are communicated to the lapped inner surface of blade channel member 31. In addition, this form Patented Nov. 17, 1959 of the invention provides superior access to the interior of blade channel member 31 both for purposes of lapping the inner web surface and for venting cut hair from the shaver during and following an instance of use.
From the above description it is thought that the construction and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art. Various changes in detail may be made without departing from the spirit or losing the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A dry shaver blade and support comprising a blade channel member having cutting apertures and an associated, similarly facing support channel member of nonyielding material, said support channel member having the legs thereof secured to the legs of said biade channel member, one of the legs of said support channel member having a non-yielding mounting portion projecting beyond the adjacent leg of said blade channel member, said one 1 leg in the mounting portion thereof having greater length than the other support channel member leg, said mounting portion serving as the sole mounting means for said blade and support.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said support channel member is located outside of said blade channel member and wherein the central portion of the web and the adjacent leg portions or" said support channel member have an aperture to expose said cutting apertures, the remaining portions of said web engaging the web of said blade channel member.
