To all whom it may concern.-

. My invention relates to improvements which although adapted to some extent for general application, are mainly applicable to what are known in the art as sectional water-tube boilers, of which the boiler represented in the annexed drawings is a type.
The improvements have reference to end flttin gs or connections for the tubes, constructed in a peculiar manner to permit ready access to the interior of the tubes or tlues for the purpose of removing obstructions therefrom.
It also consists in a superheater and connections therefor constructed in such manner that said superheater maybe used either as a superheater or as a portion of the steam-generating apparatus.
The improvement further consists in plates of peculiar construction to form the exterior jacket or casing of the boiler.

tails of the tube and-conneetions- Referring to the drawings, A represents the boiler proper, consisting of a series of inclined tubes, B, furnished at the end with caps or fittings C, screwed thereon, the tubes being arranged in vertical series with the caps or iittiugs at each end of the series connected by short tubes D of reduced diameter, threaded in reverse directions at their opposite ends, as shown inFig, 4. The lowermost connecting-tube, B, at the vrear end of each section or series, -connects with a mud-drum, E, while the uppermost connecting-tube at the forward end communicates with the interior of the manifold F, which latter is in turn connected to a drum or series of drulns, H, therear ends ofthe drums being connected to the mud-drum E by a down-pipe or series of down-pipes, I. It will be seen that under this arrangement the water may make a complete circuit ververtical pipes D at the rear end, and thence upward through the vinclined pipes B to the front of the generator, where it ascends through the forward caps and pipes, D, into the drum `is to be used, either directly or after rst passing through the superheater.
The superheater herein shown consists in the two inclined tubes S and T, joined at their rear ends. The lower pipe, T, is connected by a pipe, w, with the steam-discharge pipe M, leading from the steam-drum K. The pipe fr is provided, as shown, with a valve, O, near its upper end, by which communication with the steam-pipe may be closed. The steampipe is also provided with avalve, N, by which it may be closed between the drum K and the The upper tube, S, of the superheater is connected by a pipe, y, with the steam-drum K. Then the valve N is closed and the valve O opened, the steam is compelled to pass from the drum K downward through the pipe y, and thence through the superheater, escaping finally through the pipe x into the dischargepipe M.
Owing to the fact that the superheater is .located in the base of the furnace and exposed directly to the action of the fire, the steam is thoroughly superheated in its passage, and consequently delivered in a dry condition.
In order to adapt the superheater to be used 'when required as a portion of the steam-generating apparatus, a pipe, 7, is extended from the lower end of the pipe w to the muddrum E, and provided with the cock or valve Q, by which it may be closed. If the valve O be closed and the valyes N and Q be opened, the circulation will be from the mud-drum through pipe XV into the superheater, and thence through the pipe g/ into the steamdrum, any water which may be carried with the steam through the pipe y into the drum .K flowing therefrom into the lower drum, H,

is applied, for the purpose of discharging the water from the superheater, when required, and of observing the quality or dryness of the steam.
In order that access may be had to the base of the boiler for the purpose of observing the interior condition of the tubes and of removing obstructions therefrom, it is desirable that the lowermost tube, I3, of each generator-seetion shall be provided with a readily-reinovable cover. To this end I adopt the construction represented in Figs. l and l. rlhe cap C at the end of the lower tube is provided with a front opening, a, closed by means of a cap or plug, b, held in place by an outside pressurescrew, c, seated in a removable bar or plate, (l, this bar being loosely and re1novably seated in ajaw or pocket formed on the outside of the cap C. By turning the screw backward, the plate l may be relieved from pressure, whereupon said plate, together with the plate b and its screw, may be Lfted out of the pocket, thereby leaving the opening a eX posed in such manner as to permit the introduction of a rod, scraper, or other instrument into the end of the tube.
To secure a proper closing of the opening a it is advisable to make the same of as small diameter as allowable. It is therefore made, as shown in the drawings, of a diameter less than that of the tube I3, and placed with its axis below that of the tube, in order that the rod or other tool inserted through it may act on the lower surface of the tube. The essential feature of the invention in this regard consists in the employment of a removable cap, a screw, and a screw-supporting plate, and it is manifest that they may be varied in forni and detail without essentially changing their action or departing from the mode of opera` tion.
For the purpose of permitting the introduction of a scraper or other instrument through the cap C and vertical connecting-tubes I), the cap at the lower end of each series is provided with an opening in the under side, closed by means of a vertical. screw-plug, E, which may be removed at will.
For the purpose of inelosing the generator proper, I provide a suitable frame-work or support, which may be of any ordinary form or construction, with duplicate coveri 11g-plates G, such as represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Each consists of a fiat plate or body portion, having its two faces provided with projecting lianges or ribs g, extending around the same at a short distance from the outer edge. Each plate has one face covered and protected within the line ofthe flange by a body of non-conducting material secured in place by means of the surrounding iiange and of plates or anchors 71., made of any suitable form, and secured to the face of the plate by means of rivets, bolts, or screws. The form of these anchors 7L is not material, provided they are adapted to lock firmly with the non-conducting material applied over and around them,
so as to retain the same firmly in place. Each plate is provided on one side, around or outside of its flange g, with a narrow strip of refractory packing material, i.
The plates are applied in position, as represented in Eig. 1, one above another, with their edges overlapping each other, the packing material applied, as described, serving to protect their entire inner surface against the action ofthe heat and flames.
The present invention' is restricted to those matters and things hereinafter claimed, and as to all matters which may be described or shown, but which are not claimed, the right is reserved to make the same the subject of a separate application.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. In combination with the water-tube, its cap or fitting G, provided with the opening a, and having the pocket or receptacle east integral therewith,the valve b,plate (Land screw c.
2. The cap or fitting C, cast complete in one piece, with the opening a, to afford access to the tube, and with the external pocket to admit the valve and valve-supporting devices.
3. In combination with the tube B, the cap or tittingC, provided with an opening, a, having a diameter less than that ofthe tube, and arranged with its axis below that of the tube, and means, substantially as described, for closing said opening, whereby the introduction of a tool upon the lower surface of the tube is permitted.
4. In combination with the tubular boiler, having the mud-drum at the base and the stea1ndrum at the top, the superheater, the steam-discharge pipe from the steam-drum, and provided with aclosingvalve, a pipe connecting the steam-drum with the superheater, a second pipe provided with a closingvalve, connecting the superheater with the steam-discharge pipe, and a third pipe provided with a closing-valve, connecting the superheater with the mud-drum, whereby the superheater may be used as a portion of the generating apparatus at will.
5. 'Ihe combinations of the tubes B, and the vertical connections at their ends, communicating-drums H and K, pipe I, mud-drum E, the superheater-pipes y, and XV, and the valves Q, N, and O.
6. rIhe improved plate for a boiler-easing, consisting of the flat body port-ion, having the ribs g, formed on its two surfaces, combined with the anchors h, and the body of refractory or non-conducting material applied to one face of the plate within the flange.
T. The combination of the plates flanged upon both faces, the body of refractory material applied to one surface within the flange, and the body of refractory material applied to one face outside of said fiange.
