a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort section thereof; Fig. 4, a detail view, showing the construction of one of the hasps and the recess in the doorwith which it engages.

The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in balingpresses for hay or other material, and refers more particularly to horizontal presses wherein is employed a horizontal plunger operated by cords and pulleys connected with a suitable horse-power.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective baling-press that may be easily operated by horse-power and the bale readily removed from the press; and it consists in the several details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, and

. hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the horizontal press-box, provided with the guide-extension B for the plunger 0. The press-box A has hinged side doors, D E, opening downward, and to the top of said box are hinged doors F Gr, 'the former opening lengthwise, and the latter opening transversely of the box. The door D is provided with staplearms a, with which engage hinged hasp-arms b, projecting from the door E and extending over the door F, while the door G is provided with similar hasp-arms, 0', to engage with stationary staple-arms d, the several staple and hasp arms being fastened together by suitable keys, 6. The door F has connected to it metal hasps f, which extend over the edge of the door, and are formed with downwardly-projecting flanges 9, said flanges entering recesses h after having passed over the staples j secured to the door G, thereby securely connecting toof withstanding the great outward pressure necessary in the process of baling, while the doors can be opened very quickly and with comparatively little trouble. The plunger 0 is provided with a horizontal beam, H, its ends extending out through the sides of the extension B of the press. This extension 13 is provided with ways or tracks t k, over which fit the recesses Z upon the upper and lower edges of the beam H. By the above construction the beam II will be prevented from moving laterally, and therefore guided in a straight line, carrying the plunger with it against the material in the box A. The beam H is connected to a suitable Windlass, I, by cord or rope on, said Windlass having its hearings in uprights n at the end of the extension of the press. These uprights n and horizontal braces 12 fit over the reduced ends r of the extension B, and are held thereon by keys 8, thus admitting the ready removal of the uprights and braces, and allowing the plunger 0, with its beam, to be removed when required for any purpose. The windlass I is provided with a suitable crank-handle, J, for turning it to draw the plunger 0 back in position after baling the hay. A rope or cord, t, passes around the front end of the press and extends backward to the beam H, after which the ends of the rope or cord are brought around grooved pulleys a at the ends of the beam and forward,

where they are connected to a second rope or the press and at its sides are pivoted weighted dogs M, so that after the plunger 0 has been brought forward against the hay in the box A its greatest distance the dogs M will automatically fall to the position to firmly lock or hold the plunger in place by hearing against the cross-beam H, shoulders 1 being formed on the dogs for that purpose.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The press-box A, having its hinged doors and fastenings, and the extension B, provided with ways or tracks 13 7c, and notched weighted dogs M, in combination with the plunger G, cross-beam H, having recesses Z, fitting over the ways or tracks, and provided with the pul leys u, the cord or ropes t o, and Windlass K, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4. A baling-press consisting of the box A and hinged doors D E F G and its fastening devices, the extension B, having tracks or ways i 7., notched weighted dogs M, Windlass I, and cord or rope m the plunger 0, crossbeam H, having recesses 7 and pulleys u, cords or ropes t r, and the windlass K, provided with spiral seats 10, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
