' A. R. RUMSEY.
STBIKING' BAG FOR EXERGISING. No. 291,015. Patented De0.-Z5, 1883.
H M/ww- A Q. mMmfl? (Y WO UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ALBERT R. RUMSEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
-STRIKINGI-BAG FOR EXERCISING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,015, dated December 25, 1883.
I I Application filedJuly24,1883. (Nomodeli) To all whom it may concern.- 5
Be it known that I, ALBERT 1H,;RU1WSEY, of Cleveland, county of Ouyalioga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Striking- Bags for Exercising; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description. of the same, reference being made to' the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in striking-bags for use in gymnasiums and other places for exercising and physical development. The common form and material used for thispurpose have been open to objections, on account of Weight and rigidity, as being made of canvas, leather, 850., and commonly filled with sand or other unyielding material, they do not afford a pleas- .ant resistance to strike against, and are heavy and cumbersome. It is my intention to furv nish a bag for this purpose composed of rubher or other suitable elastic material, and suitably provided with an opening or valve by means of which the air-tight bag may be filled with air or emptied otthe same. Thus,
when it is distended its weight will not be greater than when collapsed, and it affords a bag of large surface and light weight, which is consequently much quicker in its movements thanthose heretofore used, and thus affords a much better form of exercise, as it requires greater agility and attention to catch the bag on its return, after a blow has been struck.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an outer or perspective view, Fig. 2 a vertical section, and
Fig. 3 a top view, of my improved bag.
A is the body of the bag proper. B B are bottom and top of same. D is a ring riveted into top, and through which cord or rope E is passed for suspending the bag. f is an opening at bottom, and a valve, F, of any desirable form, admits air to the interior and closes to prevent its escape, thus keeping the bag distended.
Any size or a variation of the shape of the bag will be clearly within the scope of my invention, and either rubber, leather, or other suitable elastic material may be used, the edges being sewed or cemented together to form an air-tight bag. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
i A striking-bag for physical exercise, conl sisting of the bag A, having top and bottom 13 B, ring D, and valve F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 9th day of June, 1883.
