9 Claims.` (Cl. 12-20) The present invention relates to an apparatus for reinforcing a projecting lip on an inner sole by attaching a 4tape to the lip and to the adjacent portion of an inner sole.
It is known to formprojecting lips on inner soles by incising or gapping the top face of the sole and substantially parallel to the edges of the same, turning up the flap formed by the incision and sticking together turned up ap portions to form a projecting ledge or lip extending substantially parallel to the edge of the sole. It is also known to reinforce such lip by attaching an adhesive tape to the inner face of the lip and to the adjacent portion of the sole.
This operation is yfrequently carried out manually, since the known machines for attaching adhesive tape to an inner sole are only capable of attaching the tape to the lip only so that an additional manual operation is required for attaching the tape to the top face of `the sole adjacent to the lip. Since it is diticult to apply a continuous length of -tape which conforms to the pointed shape of the sole, frequentlyl two separate pieces of adhesive tape are attached to the longitudinally extending portions of the lip. This process has the disadvantage to require two operations of the machine. Also one end of one strip must be provided with an adhesive on both sides so that Ithe end of the other strip may be attached thereto. The seam formed by the overlapping end portions of the two strips of tape must be pressed at by a manual operation. Moreover, this process cannot be carried out with shoes having a very pointed end.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome the disadvantages of the known art and to provide an apparatus capable of reinforcing an'upturned lip of an inner sole in a single operation by `attaching `simultaneously an adhesive tape to the inner face of the lip and to the adjacent strip-shapedportion of the top face of the inner sole.
It is another object ofthe present invention to provide means for attaching the adhesive tape securely to the grooved or gapped portion on the top face of the inner sole which is formed by incising the top face in order to form the ilap for making a lip.
lt is a further object of the present invention to provide a device formattaching a reinforcing adhesive tape to a lip extending around an inner sole which is capable of moving around the sharply bent` portion of the lip at the point of the sole having a small Iradius of curvature.
It is Ia still further object `of the present invention to provide a pair of combined pressure -and transporting means for pressing the tape to the upturned lip and simultaneously transporting the sole during operation.
It is also an object of the present invention to arrange in a bore of the inner pressure and transporting means a presser member front end face `of which isA so shaped as to exactly tit on thestepped surface of the top face of the inner solecreated'by incising or gapping.
It is yet another object of the present' invention'to rice provide a device supplying the adhesive tape to reciprocating transporting means at such speed that there is no tension in the reinforcing tape during the operation.
With these objects in view the present invention mainly consists in an apparatus for pressing an adhesive tape to the top face of an inner sole and to an elongated lip projecting from the top face. The apparatus comprises irst supporting means for supporting the inner sole on a bottom face thereof, at least two combined pressure and transporting means having free ends and two spaced oppositely arranged engaging faces adapted to press together a tape and a Klip, second supporting means movably supporting the combined pressure and transporting means with at least the engaging faces movable in a direction parallel to the supporting plane, and at least one presser member, which is movable towards and away from the rst supporting means and adapted to press the tape against the gapped grooved portion of the top face Y of the inner sole adjacent the lip.
An adhesive reinforcing tape which is attached to the inner sole by the apparatus according to the present invention is firmly connected to the strip-shaped grooved portion of the top face of the inner sole `so that when the upper leather of the shoe is connected to the lip by stitching parallel to the top face of the sole, the needle passes through the lip and the tapeattached thereto, whilein the arrangements according to the prior art the needle frequently passes between the tape and the depressed portion of the inner sole so that the upper leather is not connected to the lip.

Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. l, the inner sole 1 is gapped along the incision line 2 and the ilap formed thereby is turned up to for one half of the upturned lip 4 the other half of which is produced by an incision along the strip-shaped outer Vit is cut olf at 7., y The tape'S is suppliedv by guiding means 44 shown in Fig. 5. As can 3. be best seen from Fig. 2 a pair of pincer members 10 and 13 having engaging faces 10', 13 are arranged on both sides for pressing the tape 5 and the lip 4 together and for transporting the sole. A pivoted lever 26 is mounted on a pivot pinV 26a on a pair of extensions 11 of the interconnecting member 11. In a bore 13a of the pincer member 13 a presser member 27 is slidably mounted and provided at the front end face thereof with a projecting portion 3-1 and a depressed portion 32 which fit on the stepped. surface of the tape-5 lying on the grooved surface of the top face of the inner sole 1. The rear end of the presser member 27 is threaded and provided with a nut 27 and a cap 28 in the end of which a. ball 29 is arranged. A spring 30 the tension of which may be adjusted by the nut 27', urges the presser member 27 away from the sole and the supporting table 57 which supports the bottom face. of the sole in a supporting plane and constitutes first supporting means.
On one end of the pivoted lever 26 a roller 24. is rotatably mounted by means of a bolt and nut 25, while the other end portion of the pivoted lever 26 is provided with a depressed portion 26.
A shaft 19 is turnably mounted in a sleeve 58, and as can be best seen from Fig. 3, a lever 19', fixed at one end to shaft 19, is provided at the other end thereof with a pivot pin 29 on which a movable member 21 is supported, A further presser member, which will be referred to hereinafter as presser foot member 22 is secured by a screw 23 to the movable member 21 and moves with the same so that member 21 and presser foot member 22 together constitute presser foot means. The presser foot means 21 and 22 are raised and lowered in the direction of the arrows 59 when the shaft 19 rocks the lever 19. The presser foot member 22 is not shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 illustrates the motion-transmitting operating means for operating the elements of the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 in a predetermined sequence.
A pulley 81, driven by a motor, not shown, drives the shaft 8i). Fixedly mounted on the shaft Si) are two eccentric means 82 and 88 which reciprocate the members 34 and 87, respectively. Member 84 is connected by a pin 85 to a crank arm 86 so that during rotation of the shaft 80, the shaft 19 is rocked, which is fiXedly connected to the member 86. Thereby the presser foot means, including the movable member 21 and the presser foot 22, is raised and lowered and rocks lever 26, which 'may be considered a part of the operating means. The
pin 87 rocks the levers 88 and 70 about the xed stationary pivot pin 89. A linkage 72 is connected by pin 71 to the lever arm 70 and by the pin 73 to an arm 74 of the hollow shaft 8 so that shaft 8 performs a swinging movement when the drive shaft 80 rotates. As described with reference to Fig. 2, such swinging movement of the hollow shaft 8 effects pivoting of the combrned pressure and transporting means 10 and 13, and transport of the sole. The rod 18 is actuated by swinging arm 77 engaging the resiliently supported flange 60' and a xed flange 79. The swinging arm 77 is pivotally mounted on the xed pin 78 and is provided with an extension 76 ending in a cross pin 75 which is reciprocated by member 84.
The apparatus operates in the following manner:
When the rod 18 is retractedV and releases the pivoted pincer member 13, the spring 17 pivots the pincer member 13 to a releasing position in which the; lipof the sole and the adhesive tape 5' can be inserted between the two pincer members 1t) and 13. When the machine is started the lever 77 moves the rodv 18 to theright in Fig. 2 whereby the pincerv member 13 is moved to a clamping position in which the engaging faces 10', 13' press the tape 5 against the lip 4, while the shaft 19 is turned by operating means which. will be described hereinafter and lifts member 21 through lever 19. The depressed portion 26 of the lever 26 prevents engagement between the lever 26 and the presser member 27 during pivoting, of pincer member 13. Whenthe. lip is clamped, the pivoted lever 2,5 is pivotedby the. raised movable member 21 acting on roller 24 and, sliding on the ball 29, presses the presser member 27 intransverse direction into a projecting position. andy against the tape so as to secure the tape tothe top face of the. inner sole l. During. such transport, the presser foot 22 is retracted from the sole;
Now the shaft 19 actuated by. operati-ng means which will be described hereinafter 'pivots lever 19 and lowers tbe presser foot means, namely the movable member 21 and the presser foot member 22 which engages thev outer edge portion 3 of the sole 1 and presses the same against the supporting table 57 so that the sole cannot move. Thereupon the member 77 is moved to. the right in Fig. d due to the action of members 3.4 75 and 76 and shifts the rod 18 by engaging the xed ange 79. The rod is shifted to the right in Fig.. 6, and. to the left in Fig. 2, and releasesthe. movable pincer member 13 which opens due to the. action of the spring.1-.7, while the. lowering of the movable member 2.1 permits pivoting of tie lever 26 so that the. spring4 3l? pushes, the, presser member 27 upwardly. The pincer members 1G', 13;i are now in. releasing position and can be pivoted by the, operating means together with members, 8 and 11 bach to the guiding means supplying'the. tape, while. the sole is securely held on the supporting meansv 57 by the presser .foot member 22. The presser foot means 21 22. are retracted by shaft 19 and lever 19 when the pincers lll, 13 close again and the operation is repeated until the reinforcing tape has been attached to the inner face of the entire lip and to thevadja'cent portion ofl the top face of the inner sole. The end. ofthe reinforcing strip is then cut o by a knife. (not shown), which is arranged .on the machine head.
Fig. 6 illustrates the motion ytransmitting operating means for operating the elements ofthe embodiment shown in Fig. 2 in a predetermined sequence.
A pulley 8l, driven by a motor, not shown, drives the shaft 80. Fixedly mounted on the shaft 8l! are two eccentric means 82 and 83 which reciprocate themen;-
bers 84 and 87, respectively. Member 8d?isconnectedV by a pin 85. to a crank arm 8`6'so that during rotation of the shaft 8l) the shaft 19, which is iixedl'y connected' to the member 86,v is rocked.. Thereby theV presser foot means including the movable member 21' and the presser foot 22, are raised and. lowerediandrock lever 26 which may be considered a part. o-f the operating means. The pin 87 rocks th@ lever 88, 7) about. the fixed stationary pivot pin 89. A linkage 72 is connected by pin 71 to the lever arm 70, and `by the pin 73 to an arm 74 of the hollow shaft 8 so that shaft S performs a swinging movement when the drive shaft 80 rotates. As described with reference to Fig. 2, such swinging movement of the hollow shaft 8 effects pivoting of the combined pressure and transporting means 8, 11, 10, 13 and transport of the sole.
The rod 18 is actuated by swinging arm 77 engaging a resiliently supported iiange 60 and a fixed flange 79. The swinging arm 77 is pivotally mounted on a fixed pin 78 and is provided with an extension 76 ending in a cross pin 75 which is reciprocated by member 84.
According to a modified embodiment of the present invention, which is shown in Fig. 4, the sole 1 is vertically arranged and supported by a supporting roller 36 on the bottom face thereof. Opposite the top face of the sole, a pair of cooperating pressure and transporting rollers 33 and 34 having engaging faces 33a, 34a are arranged, which engage the lip 4 and `the tape 5, and during rotation simultaneously press the tape against the lip and transport the sole. The shafts 66 of rollers 33 and 34 are turnably mounted in supporting means 55a. The pressure and transporting rollers 33 and 34 constitute combined pressure and transporting means and'A have the same purpose as the combined pressure and transporting means described with reference to Figs. 2 and 6. In order to attach the tape to the top face of the sole, a reciprocating presser member 35 is arranged adjacent to the roller 34 and progressively presses against the tape 5 during transport of the sole and tape. The roller 34 is provided with an axial bore 34 in which a presser member 27" is slidably mounted. The presser members 27 and 35 are reciprocated by operating means to press the tape progressively against the grooved gapped portion of the top face of the sole and then to release such portion while the rollers 34, 33 continuously rotate to feed the tape and the sole.
Fig. 7 illustrates an embodiment similar to the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, according to which the presser member 35 has a head portion 35 which has a stepped front end face composed of a projecting portion 35a and a depressed portion 35b so as to engage the grooved strip-shaped portion of the top face of the sole formed by gapping, and the adjacent portion of the top face. VThe head portion 35 is U-shaped and extends around a part of the perimeter of the pressure and transporting roller 34 which cooperates with the pressure and transporting roller 33 to move the sole over the supporting roller 36. The shape of the head portion assures reliable pressing of the tape against the sole so thatit is not necessary to provide a presser member in a bore of the roller mean 34.
In Fig. 7 also, the operating means of the apparatus are shown which may be used with the embodiment of Fig. 4 as well. A pulley 61 is fixed to a shaft 66 which carries an eccentric 65. The member 64 is reciprocated by the eccentric 65 so that the lever 63 is pivoted and reciprocates the shaft 62 of the presser member 35. Gear means 68 connect the shaft 66 with shaft 67 of the supporting roller 36.
From the description of the two embodiments shown in Figs. 2 and 6, and 4 and 7, respectively, it becomes apparent that the pincer members 10 and 13 as well as the pressure and transporting rollers 33 and 34 constitute combined pressure and transporting means for pressing the tape against the lip and for transporting gaging faces moving during movement of `said combined.
6 by spring 43 to pivot on the support 40 into the engagement with the roller 37.
In order to assure a constant sufficient supply of tape to the combined pressure and supporting means 10, 13 `which operate in steps, a member' 46 is mounted on an extension of the pin 26a and provided with an elongated slot 45 into which a pin 47', secured to an arm 47, projects. The lother end 49 of the arm 47 operates a ratchet means 48 which actuates the roller 37 so that pivoting of the extensions 11 during transporting of the sole effects stepwise rotation of the roller 37 in one direction and transport of the tape 5. By adjusting the position of the pin 47 in the slot 45, the extent of turning of roller 37 and the length of the tape which is fed can be determined. lf the pin 47 is in the upper portion of the slot 45, more tape is fed.
While the invention has beenillustrated and described as embodied in an apparatus provided with a combined pressure land transporting means, and with at least reciprocated presser member for pressing during movement in one direction the tape into a grooved portion of the sole formed by cutting `a ap for, the lip, it is not intended to be'limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may bev What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by- Letters Patent is:
l. An apparatus for pressing a tape to the top face of an inner sole and to an elongated lip projecting from the top face, the apparatus comprising, in combination, first supporting means for movably supporting said inner sole on the bottom face thereof; at least two elongated combined pressure and transporting means having free end faces located opposite said first supporting means and having spaced oppositely located engaging faces extending transverse to said free end faces for transporting and pressing together a tape and a lip arranged between said engaging faces; second supporting means supporting said combined pressure and transporting means with at least said oppositely arranged engaging faces movable in one direction for moving said tape, said lip and said inner sole together; at least one presser member located directly adjacent one of said combined pressure and transporting means, extending along and in the same direction as said one combined pressure and transporting means, and movable in a transverse direction towards and away from said rst supporting means to press said tape against the top face of the inner sole adjacent the lip thereon; and means for moving saidl combined pressure and transporting means and said presser member.
2. An apparatus for pressing a tape to the top face of an inner sole and to an elongated lip projecting from the top face, the apparatus comprising, in combination, supporting means lfor movably supporting said inner sole on the bottom face thereof; at least twormovable elon-l gated combined pressure and transporting means having free end faces located opposite said supporting means and khaving two spaced oppositely located engaging faces extending transverse to said free end faces for transporting and pressing together a tape and a lip arranged between said engaging faces, said oppositely arranged enpressure and transporting means in one direction for moving said tape, said lip and said inner sole, one of said extending from the free end face thereof; at least one presser member located in said bore of said one of said combined pressure and transporting means movable away from said supporting means andv toward said supporting means into a position projecting out of said bore beyond said free end face of said one combined pressure and transporting means towards said supporting means topress said tape against the top face of the inner sole' adjacent then lip thereon; and moving means operatively connected to said combined pressure and transportingT means for moving the latter and said presser member.
3. An apparatus for pressing a tape to the top face of an inner sole and to an elongated lip projecting from the top face along one face of said elongated lip and along an adjacent strip-shaped grooved portion of said top face of the inner sole, the apparatus comprising, in combination, first supporting means for supporting said inner sole on the bottom face thereof; at least two elongated combined pressure and transporting means having free end faces located opposite said first supporting means and having two spaced oppositely located engaging faces extending transverse to said free end faces for transporting and pressing together a tape and a lip arranged between said engaging faces, one of said combined pressure and transporting means having a bore extending through the free end face thereof; second supporting means supporting said combined pressure and transporting means for movement, said oppositely arranged engaging faces moving during movement of said combined pressure and transporting means in one direction for moving said tape, said lip and said inner sole; and at least one presser member located in said bore of said one of said combined pressure and transporting means movable away from said rst supporting means and toward the same into a position projecting out of said bore, said presser member having a free front end face formed with a projecting portion and a depressed portion to press said tape with said projecting portion against said stri-p-shaped grooved portion of the top face of the in ner sole and with said depressed portion against said top face of said inner sole adjacent to said grooved portion; and means for moving said combined pressure and transporting means and said presser member.
4. An apparatus for pressing a tape to the top face of an inner sole and to an elongated'lip projecting from the top face, the apparatus comprising, in combination, a supporting table for slidably supporting the inner sole on the bottom face thereof; at least two elongated cornbined pressure and transporting means having free end faces located opposite said supporting table and having spaced oppositely arranged engaging faces extending transverse to said end faces, one of said combined pressure and transporting means being pivotally supported on the other of said'pressure and transporting means for pivotal movement towards the same into a clamping position in which said engaging faces are spaced a short distance for clamping the tape and the lip, and away from the same to a releasing position; supporting means pivotally supporting said combined pressure andv transporting means for reciprocation about an axis parallel to said supporting table and transverse to said engaging faces; a reciprocating actuating rod engaging said one of said pressure and transporting means for pivoting the same to said clamping position and for holding the same in said clamping position during reciprocating movement of said cornbirred pressure and transporting means; a spring for moving said one of said pressure and transporting means to said releasing position during return reciprocating movement of'said combined pressure and transporting means; a reciprocable presser foot means movable towards and away from said supporting table for clamping said inner sole while said one of said pressure and transporting means is in said releasing position, and for releasing said inner sole while said one of said pressure and transporting means is in saidclamping position, said presser foot means located adjacent saidrcombi'ned. pressure and trans'- porting means; at least one presser member mounted on one of said pressure andtransporting means for movement towards and away' froml said' supporting table and operatively connected t'o`- said presser foot means for movement towardssa'id supporting table when said presser foot means moves away from the same, and for movement away from said supporting table when said presser foot means moves towardv the same; whereby said presser member may press said tape against the top face of the inner sole while saidV combined pressure and transporting means are in said clamping position; and motion transmitting operating means for operatively connecting' andV moving said combinedl pressure andl transporting means, said` actuating rod, said pressure foot means and said presser member.
5. An apparatus for' pressing a tape tothe top face of an inner sole and to an elongated lip projecting from the top face, the apparatus comprising, in combination, a` supporting roller for supporting said inner sole onk the bottom face thereof; a pair of elongated pressure and transporting rollers having free end faces located opposite said supporting roller and rotatable about parallel axes extending normal to the axis of rotation of said supporting roller, said pair of rollers having opposite engaging roller faces extending transverse to said end faces and adapted to engage a` tape and a lip and topress the same together, and to transport said lip and thereby said inner sole during rotation of said rollers; at least one reciprocating presser member movable towards and away from said supporting roller for pressing said tape against the inner sole, and for releasingA the inner sole during transporting rotation of said pair of rollers; and means for operating said pair of pressure rollers and said supporting roller and said presser member.
6. An apparatus for pressing! a tape tof the top" face of an inner sole and to an elongated lip projecting from the top face along one face of said elongated lip and along an adjacent strip-shaped groovedportion of the top face of the inner sole, the apparatus comprising, in combination, a supporting rollerl for supporting said inner sole on the bottom face thereof; a pair of elongated pressure and transporting rollers having freey end faces located opposite said supporting roller and rotatable about parallel axes extending normal to the axis of rotation ofY said supporting roller, said pair of rollers having` opposite engaging roller facesl extending transverseto said end faces and adapted to engage a tape and a.4 lip and to press the same together, and to transport said lip and thereby said inner soleduring rotation'of said-rollers, the one roller of said pair of. rollers which is adapted to engage saidV one face of said elongated lip havingan axially extending bore; a reciprocating presser member located in. said bore and being movable towards said supporting roller into a projecting position projecting out of said bore for pressing said tape against the stripshaped grooved portion of thek inner sole, said presser member movable away from said supporting roller to a releasing position during transporting rotation of said pair of rollers; and means for operating said pairs of pressure rollers, said supporting roller and said presser member.
7. An apparatus for pressing a tape to a top face of an inner sole and to an elongated lip projecting fronithe top face, the apparatus comprising, in combination, a supporting table for slidably supportingsa'id inner' sole on the bottom face thereof; at least two pincer members having free end faces located opposite said supporting' table and having two spaced oppositely located: engaging faces extending transverse to said end faces,` one of' said pincer members pivotally supported on the other of said pincer members for pivotal movement towardsv the same into a clamping position and' awa-y from the same to al releasing position, said one of said pincer members having a bore extending through the free end face thereof; supporting means pivotally supporting said pincer members for reciprocation about an axis parallel to said supporting table and transverse to said engaging faces; a reciprocating actuating rod engaging said one of said pincer members for pivoting the same to said clamping position and for holding the same in said clamping position during reciprocating movement of the same in one direction; a spring for moving said one of said pincer members to said releasing position during return reciprocating movement of said pincer members; a reciprocable presser foot means movable towards and away from said supporting table for clamping said inner sole while said one of said pincer members is in said releasing position, and for releasing the inner sole while said one of said pincer members is in said clamping position and transports said inner sole, said presser foot means being located adjacent said pincer members; a lever pivotally' mounted on said other of said pincer members and engaging at one end thereof said presser foot means; at least one presser member located in said bore of said one of said pincer members movable therein and engaging with the rear end thereof the other end of said lever so as to move toward said supporting table when said presser foot means moves away from the same, and away from said iirst supporting table when said presser foot means moves toward the same; spring means urging said presser member to engage said other end of said lever; and motion-transmitting operating means for con necting and moving said pincer members, said actuating rod and said presser foot means.
8. An apparatus as set forth in the claim 7 wherein said lever is formed with an arcuate depressed portion adjacent said other end of the same, and wherein said rear end of said presser member is located opposite said depressed portion of said lever when said one pincer member is in said releasing position and moves to said clamping position, said presser member movable by said spring means away from said supporting table and into said depressed portion during movement of said one pincer member to said clamping position.
9. An apparatus for pressing a tape to the top face of an inner sole and to an elongated lip projecting from the top face along an adjacent strip-shaped grooved portion of the top face of the inner sole, the apparatus comprising, in combination, a supporting roller for supporting said inner sole on the bottom face thereof; a pair of elongated pressure and transporting rollers having free end faces located opposite said supporting roller and rotatable about parallel axes extending normal to the axis of rotation of said supporting roller, said pair of rollers having opposite engaging roller faces extending transverse to said end faces and adapted to engage a tape and a lip and to press the same together, and to transport said lip and thereby said inner sole during rotation of said rollers; at least one reciprocating presser member movable towards and away from said supporting roller for pressing said tape against the inner sole, and for releasing the inner sole during transporting rotation of said pair of rollers, said presser member having a U-shaped head portion extending around part of the perimeter of one of said pressure and transporting rollers and having a stepped front face adapted to t on said grooved stripshaped portion of said top face of the sole, and on the portion of said top face adjacent thereto; and means for operating said pair of pressure rollers and said supporting roller and said presser member.
