MICHAEL TOBIN, OF BALDWVINSVILLE, NEW YORK.
ART OF PACKING TOBACCO lN CASES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,818, dated December 25, 1883.
Application filed March 31, 1883. No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL TOBIN, of
' Baldwinsville, in the county of Onondaga, in
State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Art of Packing Tobacco in Cases, of which the following, taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in an improvement in the art of packing leaf-tobacco in cases, so as to prevent the overlapping ends of the tobacco from becoming entangled with each other, and render the several layers or courses of tobacco readily separable from each other without danger of injuring the tobacco, thereby affording ready and safe access to the interior of the pack, and allowing a portion of the tobacco to be withdrawn therefrom for sampling the tobacco.
In carrying out the aforesaid process, I proceed in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a horizontal section taken immediately over the second course of tobacco placed in the case, and showing the application of the means for leveling or separating the successive layers or courses of tobacco, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A represents the box or case, constructed in the ordinary manner and of the usual size to contain the leaf-tobacco, which is generally placed therein in layers or courses, the successive layers being arranged alternately with the butt-ends of the tobacco toward opposite ends of the case, and the tip ends of the tobacco overlapping each other. Although more or less care is usually taken in properly disposing the tobacco in the case A, yet the tip ends of the tobacco become more or less entangled, and are caused to adhere to each other sufficiently to prevent the layers from being easily separated and a portion of the tobacco to be withdrawn therefrom for sampling the tobacco, the sampling being usually effected by removing the cover of the case, then inverting the case and lifting it off from the tobacco. The samples are then obtained by raising a portion of the tobacco at one end of the pack and withdrawing the desired quantity, and in so doing the entangled innerends of the tobacco cause more or less damage to the sample obtained and to that portion of the pack of tobacco from which the sample is taken.
It is to obviate the aforesaid injurious resultswhich my invention has for its object; and to that end it consists, essentially, in placing across the tip ends of each preceding layer or course of tobacco a sheet or strip, a, of
metal or other suitable material, then introducing into the case the next layer of tobacco, laying the overlapping ends thereof upon the said strip, and applying across the top of the overlapping part of said succeeding layer another strip or board, I), and pressing the latter down with sufficient force to smooth out the overlapping portions of the two layers of tobacco, and thus prevent their entanglement, the strips a and I) being shifted from layer to layer of tobacco throughout the process of packing the case, the several courses of tobacco being successively subjected to the compressing, straightening, and smoothing action of the strips or boards a and b, in the manner before described. Tobacco thus packed in cases admits of being readily separated in layers, and a sainpleof tobacco can be extracted when desired without danger of injuring the tobacco.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s The withindescribed improvement in the art of packing leaf-tobacco in cases, consisting in placing the hands in layers, with the butt-s of the successive layers turned alternately toward opposite ends of the case, and piling and press- MICHAEL TOBIN.
