BLEACHING OIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,784, dated December 25, 1883.
Application iiled March 13, 1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MoMANUs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bleaching Oil, of which the following is a'specication.
My improvement has for its object to bleach or discolorize Oils, removing what is ordinarily called the bloom; and this obj eet I effect by spreading the oil in thin films exposed to the action of air and light.
In carrying out my process I first provide an extended surface, over which the oil is caused to flow. This surface may be secured in different ways. For instance, it may consist of a series of plates carried by a large wheel which dips into a tank of oil, or it may be athin iiexible metallic band passing through a tank and upward over a pulley; but I prefer the structure shown in the drawing, consisting of parallel tubes of glass, c, connected to form a passage, through which heated water may be forced by a pump, A. A pipe, d,
extends over the structure and is perforated, so as to conduct fine streams of oil to the upper portion of the structure and discharge them upon the tubes, over which the liquid hows to the bottom, Where it is received in a suitable tank, B, fromwhich it is again pumped np by a pump, C. By this means the o"il is spread in attenuated lms over the reflectingsurfaces of the tubes, and is so exposed to th'e light that the requisite change is speedily effected. The bright polished condition of the tubes facilitates the bleaching of the oil, inasmuch as the light is reiiected and acts with greater effect, and this isincreased by heating said tubes by the flow of hotiiuid through them.
I do not limit myself to the apparatus shown, nor do I claim, broadly, agitating Oil or flowing it in thin lms While bleaching; but
I claimm y l. The within-described mode of bleaching oil while flowing, the same consisting in exposing the oil in` thin films upon bright metallic surfaces tothe action of light and air, Y
substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a device for bleaching oil, of a series of plates or bars presenting bright smooth surfaces, and appliances whereby the oil is discharged upon said surfaces so as to flow over the same in thin lms while exposed to light and air, as set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name tothis specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY MCMANUS.
