which shaft is rotated to change the position of the valve-pin by suitable mechanism, the movement of which is controlled by the speed of the engine, and in many details of construction, all of which is fully set forth in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form part thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide suitable automatic mechanism to that class of steam-engines in which the valve crank-pin is secured to an arm supported by the crank-pin of the engine, and in similar constructions thereto.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved automatic variable cutoff mechanism. Fig. 2 is a rear View of same. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of same 011 line as m. Fig. 4 is a modified form of same.
Ais the crank-wheel of the engine. B is the shaft. is the support or bearing. D is the en gine' crank-pin, and is secured to the crankwheel A. E is the connecting-rodor piston, the former being used when the cylinder F is stationary, and the latter when it is supposed to be oscillating, the improved valve-gear being adapted to both classes of engines. The crank-pin D is secured rigidly to wheel A, and carries on its outer end an arm, G, to which is pivoted, at h, a lever, H, having its upper end slotted, as at h, and its lower end provided with the valve crank-pin I, to which is journaled the valve-rod J. The crank-pin I is set sufficiently out of center to give all the necessary movement to the valve-rod. \Vorking through crank-pin D is a shaft, G, having a crank-pin, g, which works in the slot h of lever H. The other end of shaft G on.the rear of wheel A is secured to a crank, K, having an arm, K, weighted 011 its end, as at 7r. Pivoted at O to theback of wheel A, and diametrically opposite to shaft G, is another crank, K,
also carrying an arm, K, having a weight, k, and these two cranks K are arranged to point in the same direction, and are connected by a rod or link, M, and pins L. The weights 7c 5 5 are drawn toward the shaft B by springs N when running at its normal speed. Now, should the speed of the engine increase, the weights swing out by centrifugal force, extending the springs and rotating the shaft G, moving its crank-pin g, and also the valve crank-pin I, by its lever H, thus varying the throw of the valve, and automatically varying the point of cut-off by changing its relative position with respect to the crank-pin D, and thereby operates to slow down the engine. The arrows indicate the direction of movement of the various parts.
In Fig. 4c the crank-pin I is carried bya slide,
P, which works in a boX,--P, carried by the arm G, and a rod, oz, secured to the slide 1?, 7o encircled by a spring, N, may be used in place of springs N. The said slide P is moved in one direction by the lever H and in the other by the spring N. If desired, both the springs N and N may be used. The valve crank-pin 7 is preferably made to move in a radial line from the center of the shaft B, so that while the throw of the valve may be greatly varied, the amount of lead or angular advance of the said valve-pin shall remain constant.
If desired, the crank K, rod M, and one arm, K, weight k, and spring N may be dispensed with; but I prefer the two. I do not limit myself to the construction shown, as it may be modified in variousways without departing 8 from myinvention-as, for instance, the crankpin D may be made to rotate, and thus the shaft G be dispensed with.

Havingnow described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Variable cutoff mechanism for operating valves of steam-engines, which consists of a 9 5 valve-crank carrying a crank-pin, and sup ported by the crank of the engine, in combination with means controlled by the varying speed of the engine to automatically change the location of said valve-operating crank, 10o moving it at a radial line to or from the center of the crank-shaft, to vary the time of cutoff in accordance with demand, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Variable cut-off mechanism for steam-engines, which consists of an engine-crank and its pin, in combination with a valve crank-pin supported by said engine crank-pin, mechanism acting by centrifugal force to vary the position of said valve crank-pin by moving it radially to or from the center of the crank-pin, and connecting mechanism operating through said engine crank-pin to transmit the effect of the centrifugal mechanism to the said valve crank-pin, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. Variable cut-off mechanism for steam-engines, which consists of an engine-crank and its pin, in combination with a valve crank-pin supported by said engine crank-pin, mechanism acting by centrifugal force to move said valve crank-pin radially toward the crankshaft center, a spring or springs to move it radially in an opposite direction, connecting mechanism operating through said engine crank-pin to transmit the effect of the centrifugal mechanism, and springs to the said valve crank-pin, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. Valve-gear for stcam-engines, which consists of crank-wheel A, crank-pin D, supporting the lever H, carrying the valve crank-pin I, shaft G, having crank-pin g, and mechanism acting by centrifugal force to turn said shaft G independent of its revolution around the shaft of the crank-wheel A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination of crank-wheel A, crankpin D, shaft G, valve crank-pin I, centrifugal mechanism, and connecting mechanism, substantially as described, from said shaft G to said pin I, whereby the latter is moved radially over the face of the crank A to change its relative position with respect to the crank-pin D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. The combination of crank-wheel A, crankpin D, shaft G, having crank-pin g, lever'H, having valve crank-pin I, arm K, weight k, and spring N, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
.7. The combination of crank-wheel A, crankpin D, shaft G, having crank-pin g, lever H, having valve crank-pin I, cranks K, arms K, weights is, rod or link M, and springs N, sub stantially as and for the purpose specified.
