NITED STATES- PATENT Orricn.
JULIUS BRINKHOFF, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
'VEGETABLE SLICER AND GRATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,390, dated December 18, 188E.
' Application filed June 25, 1883. (ModeL) Patented in Germany August 17, 1878, No 8,007. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUs BRINKHOFF, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable Slicers and Graters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved vegetable slicer and grater that is designed for the use of hotels, restaurants, and families, and adapted to slice or grate cabbage, cucumbers, radishes, beans, and potatoes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an end elevation of my improved vegetable slicer and grater. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line w m, Fig. 1, shown as used for grating. Fig, 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line z 2, Fig. 1, shown as arranged for slicing beans. Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively an end view and a plan of the beancutting attachment. Fig. 6 is an end view of the cutter-frame with a part brokenaway, drawn onv a larger scale, Fig. 7, a side elevation Fig. 8, a detail vertical transverse section on line y y, Fig. 6, on a still larger scale; and Fig. 9, a wooden block for feeding forward the vegetables to be out.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the supportingstandard of my improved vegetable slicer and grater. This standard is made of cast-iron, and provided with horizontal arms a a, to which the supply-hopper B of an upright casing, B, is attached by a suitable fastening device. Below the horizontal arms (6 extends in downward direction a bracket-shaped portion, a, in the screw-socket of which a clamping-screw, O, is adjusted, which, in connection with the arms a a, attaches the machine securely to a table or other support. The standard A is provided at one side with an upwardly-bent arm, A, having a fixed horizontal arbor or shaft, a on which latter the revolving slicer cle, B is applied by its grooved sides. The wall of the casing B is provided with a center opening for the passage of the horizontal shaft a and at one side of the same with a feedopening, d, from which the supply-hopper B extends at the outside of the casing B. A cutter-frame, D, composed of a flanged ring, D, a center hub, f, and radial arms f, connecting said ring and hub, is supported and adapted to turn on shaft a at the inside of the casing 13, being provided with a handle, f, by which it is turned. Curved cutting-knivesf are attached to the radial arms f of the frame D.
A sheet-metal disk, D", for regulating the depth of slots, which allow it to pass the knives. An
intermediate ring, D is interposed between the disk D and the cutter-frame. This disk is provided with a series of lugs, f and the cutter-frame has a corresponding number of inclined lugs (also marked f facing the lugs of the ring. The ring D is further provided with a fixed screw-post, f", that is guided in an areshaped slotted extension, f of the cutter-frame D, whereby the ring Dion being taken hold of and moved in one direction along the inclined lugs f of the cutter-frame and ring D forces the disk D against the pressure of the spiral spring closer tothe cutting-knives, or,when
'moved in opposite direction, causes the moving of the disk by the action of the spiral spring f away from the cutting-knives f After the disk D has been adjusted to produce the required thickness of the slices, a thumbnut, f on the screw-post f is tightly clamped to the slotted extension f and thereby ring D and spider-frame D held rigidly in position. As the cutting-knives f 3 pass close to the feedopening (2 of casing B, by rotating the cutterframe the vegetables fed through the feedopening d are cut into slices of greater or less thickness, according to the greater or less distance of the disk from the edge of the cuttingknives. By the construction of the cutterframe the disk D may be quickly adjusted to any desired thickness of slices/the sliced portions being dropped back of the cutter-frame along a convexo-concave disk-shaped guardplate, E, that is secured back of the cutter frame to the hub f of the same, so as to drop into the receptacle B at the lower part of the casing B.
In place of thecutter-frame D, a'disk-shaped grater, F, may be used, as shown in Fig. 2, which is revolved by a center hub and handle on the shaft on of standard A in the same mannor as the cutter-frame D.
For cutting beans, a bean-cutting attachment, G,whichiits into the feed-opening d, and which is provided with a number of vertical inclined pockets, is attached in any suitable manner to the supply-hopper B, so that the beans are guided in inclined position and exposed to the slicingaction of the cutting-knives.
For feeding the vegetables along the central bottom of the supply-hopper,a block, H, having a handle, H, Fig. 9, is used,by which the vegetables can be pressed forward against thet cutting-knives or grater without injury to the fingers. I
By my improved slicing and grating machine, large quantities of vegetables of different kinds can be cut up in a quick and regular manner, so that it is specially adapted wherever large quantities are required. It can be readily cleaned by being taken apart, as all the parts are detachable and can be readily put together again.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination of a supporting vertical standard provided with horizontal arms at its 7 upper end and ahorizontal bracket-shaped extension at its lower end, provided with a clampscrew, an upwardly-bent arni attached to one of said horizontal arms, a flanged upright casing attached to said standard, a supply-hopper which rests upon said horizontal arms, a shaft fixed to the upper end of said upwardly-bent arm and projecting through the center ofsaid casing, and a rotary cutter supported upon said shaft within said casing, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a supporting-standard having a clamping device at its lower part and a horizontal shaft at its upper part, a flanged upright casing having a detachable bottom receptacle, a feed-opening, and a supply-hopper, a revolving and adjustable cutterframe, and a detachable guard-disk back of the cutter-frame, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a vegetable slicer and grater, of a supportingstandard, an upright easing having a1feed-opening and a supply-hopper, a detachable beaircutting attachment formed of tapering pockets, and an adjustable cutter-frame revolving on a horizontal shaft of the standard. substantially as specified.
In testimouythat I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIUS BRINKHOFF.
