1 Claim. (Cl. 29-261) My invention relates to newv landuseful improvements in pulling devices, specificallypulling devices adapted for use with pulleys, gears, ball races Iand the like, the specific object and essence of my invention being to provide 'a device of the character herewithin described which includes a cross-head and parallel action links depending therefrom connected to the jaws and means to move the jaws inwardly and outwardly, the jaws remaining or -travelling parallel to the one another at all times.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described in which the spaced position of the jaws is maintained mechanically and' rigidly.
Yet another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is adapted to receive various jaws designed for specific pulling functions, said jaws being easily inter-changed as desired.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is provided with an attachment adapted to pull Woodruff keys from key ways.
With the foregoing objects in view and such other objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference beingv had tothe accompanying drawings inwhich.:

Figure 3 is a fragmentary front elevation of one of the jaw carrying blocks showing one variationvof the jaws attached thereto.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of, one of the alternate jaws per se.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the attachment for withdrawing keys from key ways.
Figure 7 is. a topY plan of Figure 6, but with the key and key way not illustrated'.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of an alternate jaw construction.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
Convention gear and wheel pullers normally consist of links pivotally attached to a cross-head, said links travelling in and out in order to vary the spacing therebetween. This means that the jaw extremities or gripping portions are only in the optimum position for maximum grip at one point of adjustment due to the excessive arc travelled by the jaws with this form of mounting. I have provided parallel link action which not only increases considerably the radius of the arc travelled by the jaws, but also maintains the jaw stem vertical and parallel at all times with thev adjustment and therefore maintains the engaging portions of the jaws at the same angle with the horizontal at al1 times. Furthermore, the adjustment of the jaw widths is mechanical and fixed rigidly when in position.
Proceeding now to it will be seen upon reference'to Figures 1 and 2 that it consists of a cross-head 1 centrally apertured` as at 2. and having a hub 3 defining the aperture `and depending from the cross-head 1 being strengthened by iinsl4. Although in this embodimentthe cross-head is substantially rect-angular when viewed in plan, nevertheless it will be appreciated that if more than two pulling jaws are incorporated than this. cross-head could be circular or `any other convenient configuration.

The lower ends 10 of the four pairs of links 7' and' 8 are n turn pivotally connected to jaw locks 11 by means of pivot bolt 12 so that it will be appreciated that the jaw block 12 can be pivoted in an arc of relatively large radius, but the vertical faces 13 thereof remain vertical and parallel with one another `at `all times due to the parallel motion links hereinbefore described.
A parallel motion component collectively ydesignated 14 consists of an adjustment wheel 15 situated above the cross-head 1 and having a cylinder 16 screw-threaded to and depending therefrom, and secured by means of set screws, said cylinder being journalled for rotation.

The lower end 18`of. the cylinder 16 is shouldered and screw-threaded externally being engageable by a collar 19 which is 'also screw-threaded, said collar having lug 20extending outwardly therefrom. To each of these lugs'v20y is` secured a pair of parallel motion actuating links 21 by means of pivot bolts 22 and these links ex' cylinder 16 to be rotatedA freely within the aperture 2,-

From the foregoing it will be appreciated that rotationl of the wheel 15 will causethe sleeve or'collar 19VV to move vertically upon the cylinder 16 and thus due to.;
the connecting links 21, will open and closer the jaw blocks 11 maintaining same vertical and parallel to one another at all times.
Before leaving the description of the actuating component, it will be noticed that the cylinder and wheel are apertured centrally and screw-threaded internally to receive the conventional pressure rod 24 which is screw-threaded externally and extends downwardly between the jaw blocks 11, being provided with an apertured boss 25 on the upper end thereof to receive an actuating rod (not illustrated) and a hardened tip 26 in the lower end thereof to engage the shaft or similar component from which the wheel pulley or gear is being drawn.
The jaw blocks 11 are apertured horizontally as at 27 to receive bolts 28 which in turn engage jaws 29 illustrated in Figures l and 2. These jaws consist of Paientesept, s, 1959Y describe my invention in. detail,J

However, Figures 3 and 4 show alternative embodiments of these jaw portions 33 which consist of flat plates 34 secured to theundersides 35 of the stem portion 31 by means of bolt 3,6. These jaw portions can be used for internal or eux-V ternal pulling and consist of a flange portion 36 land;
curved sides 37 for engagement within or underthe article beingpulled. Y-
QFigure 8 shows a combination jaw block andV jaw portion assembly including the jaw. block 40 and jawportion 41 formed on the lower side thereof. lThis jaw block is adapted to be fitted in `place of the jaw blocks- 11 and connected directly Vto the lower ends 1 0 ofjthefset of 7 and 8 and the jaw portion 41 is provided with any withdrawal thereof.
In this connection,-
the jaws are locked in position, the pressure bar 24 l is rotated and operated in the conventional manner thus withdrawing the article from its retaining shaft or the like.
Finally, it will be noticed that I have provided a handle 57 extending outwardly from the hub 3 of the crosshead, said handle being provided for steadying purposes.
. In this connection, the stem 58 of the handle engages the hub 3 screw-threadably...andgthe innermost end of this stem is designed toA act as the aforementioned pin engageable with the groove 2 of the cylinder 16.*
Since'various modifications can bernade in my ,invention as hereinabove described, and many apparently wide- 1y different embodiments of same madewithin the spirit V For straightforward gear andv pulley removal, jawssuch as illustrated in Figure 5 may be utilized.
