Description
United States Patent TRUMPET FOR USE WITH A TEXTILE DRAFTING MACHINE John S. Dudley, Douglas, Mass, assignor to Whitin Machine Works, Whitinsville, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application November 20, 1956, Serial No. 623,417
2 Claims. (Cl. 19-157) A device known as a trumpet is commonly used with textile drafting machines to condense a sliver of loose textile fibers, preliminary to the coiling of the sliver in a sliver can.
The sliver as it approaches the trumpet is substantially without twist, and no twist is added in the coiling operation if approved coiling mechanism is used. When such a substantially untwisted sliver is thereafter drawn out of a sliver can, sliver breakage may occur.
It is the general object of my invention to provide a trumpet of an improved construction which will produce a sliver of substantially increased strength but without increase in sliver twist.
To the accomplishment of this general object, I provide a trumpet having internal shoulders or ledges which engage the outer fibers of a sliver and direct the forward end portions of said outer fibers toward the middle of the sliver, where they become more or less interwoven and interlocked with the inner fibers.
A sliver thus modified in its sliver arrangement is found to be substantially stronger and less liable to breakage than slivers as now commonly produced.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improved trumpet, in association with sliver feed rolls and with portions of a coiler head and coiler can; and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved trumpet.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a trumpet adapted to deliver a sliver to a pair of calendar or feed rolls 11 and 12 by which the sliver will be delivered to a coiler head 14 and sliver can 15.
The general construction and operation of the parts thus far described is disclosed in the prior patent to Dudley et al., No. 2,657,435, issued November 3, 1953, and to which reference is made for a more detailed description.
My improved trumpet 10 is mounted in a fixed frame 'ice member 20 and may be held from rotation by a dowel 21. The trumpet comprises a cone-shaped entrance portion 30 and a restricted cylindrical delivery portion 31, both of usual construction.
Between the portions 30 and 31, however, I provide an upper cylindrical portion 33 and a smaller lower cylindrical portion 34. A shoulder or ledge 35 underlies the cylindrical portion 33, and a corresponding shoulder or ledge 37 underlies the cylindrical portion 34.
By the use of this relatively simple modification of the trumpet construction, substantially improved sliver strength is attained. As the sliver is drawn through the trumpet by the calender or feed rolls 11 and 12, the substantially parallel outer fibers successively engage the shoulders 35 and 37. The forward ends of these outer fibers are thus inwardly displaced toward the middle portion of the sliver and become interwoven and interlocked with the inner fibers to such an extent that the strength of the sliver is materially increased, while no change is made in the twist of the sliver, which is particularly desirable in certain succeeding operations.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. A trumpet for condensing a sliver of textile fibers, comprising a tubular member having a longitudinal passage therethrough, said passage comprising a frustoconical entrance portion converging toward an intermediate portion of said passage, said passage including at least one intermediate cylindrical portion extending longitudinally from said frusto-conical entrance portion, and a restricted delivery portion formed in said passage at the end opposite said entrance portion and of a diameter less than that of the cylindrical portion, a restrictive fiat shoulder normal to the longitudinal axis of said trumpet and providing an abrupt ledge at the intersection between the delivery and cylindrical portions for engaging the outer fibers of the sliver passing through the passage to displace them inwardly toward the middle portion of the sliver.
2. The structure of claim 1 including a second cylindrical portion in said longitudinal passage intermediate the first mentioned cylindrical portion and said frustoconical entrance portion, a second abrupt ledge at the intersection between said cylindrical portions and functioning in the same manner as said first mentioned ledge.
