To all whom it may concern,

Be it known that I, W. CLAY LUTZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bedford, in the county of Bedford and State 5 of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-'in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is aspeciication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. v

My invention relates to lan improvement in portable lire-escapes; and it consists in the sillclutch A, having hinged platform B, clamp A for standards B and B2, pulleys O and O, rope E, snap-hook F, ring Gr, stirrup H, and

15 in the combination and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully described. In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detail views.

The object of my invention is to produce a portable fire-escape which may be packed into little space, and thus be readily conveyed as baggage from place to place, as a means of rendering the traveling public independent of In its represented in Fig. l as resting on the window-sill, (where it is located in practice,) to which is hinged the clamp A, whichprojects 3o over the inner side of the window and holds the platform rigidly in position.

When in use, the points of the platform-clutch A are pressed into the sill and the clamp A fastened or hooked beneath the inner side of the sill, `and the rope is then adjusted under the arms of the person descending, the ring G preventing the rope which is coiled thereon from too tightly compressing the body of the person descending. rIhe stirrup H is held in eyes e, provided at the ends of the semicircular ring H', which ring is spliced to the rope, as shown. i

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and'desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-

, l.. A portable dre-escape consisting of a sillclutch and clamp for securing it to a windowsill, a rope suspended on pulleys, having secured thereto a stirrup, and an adjustable ring havingl spliced thereto a snap-hook, substantially as shown and described.

2. The `combination of the sill clutch A, clamp A', standards B and B2 for pulleys C and G, and rope E, having secured thereto body-inclasping mechanism, substantially as shown anddescribed. v
