No.'289,744. Patented Deo..4,1883.

LA FAYETTE ALDRICH, OF MILWAUKEE, VVISOONSIN.
STEAM P IPE'AND'BOILER COVERING.
SPECIFICATION forming" part of Letters Patent No. 289,744, dated-December 4, 1883.
Application filed April 24, 1883. (No model.)
T 00% whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, LA FAYETTE ALDRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing atMilwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Pipe and Boiler Coverings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters orfigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements .in coverings for boilers, steam-pipes, &c., and pertains to the device for supporting the covering around and free from contact with the steam pipe or boiler, whereby a dead-air space is formed between the pipe and covering, which space prevents the covering from burning and heat from escaping.
The construction of my improvements are further explained by. reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a steam-pipe provided with improved covering-support. Fig. 2 represents one of the supporting-rings detached from the steampipe.
Like parts are represented by the same reference-letters in both views.
A is the steam-pipe. B is the covering. 0 is the support. The covering consists of one or more layers of sheet metal or paper, a, layers of felt I), and one or more layers of prepared paper or cloth, d. The support 0 is formed of sheet metal, which is first cut in strips corresponding in width to the space desired to be formed around the pipe, when said strips are run between corrugated rollers, by which they are corrugated and curved, so that their ends EZE meet and are secured together by rivets g g.
It is obvious that, if desired, the rings C may be cut in a circularshape from flat sheets of metal; but much of the material when thus cut is wasted. while by corrugating the metal a perfect circle is formed from straight pieces which conform to the steam pipe without waste of material, while the edges of the corrugations form agbroader bearing-surface for both the steam-pipe and covering.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. The device for supporting the exterior walls of a non-circulating or dead air chamber for steam pipes or boilers, consisting of a corrugated sheet-metal annulus, the concave edge or boiler and the outer or convex edge to form shown.
2. The annulus herein described, formed of a straight piece of sheet metal, so corrugat ed and curved as to bring its ends together, whereby it may be secured edgewise around a pipe, as set forth.
3. v The combination of a steam-pipe, A, covering B, and corrugated sheet-metal support 0, the corrugations of said support being adapted to form broad bearings for the pipe and covering, as set forth.

In testimony whereof I affix my signature in of which is adapted to bear against the pipe a bearing for the covering, substantially as
