J; SHIELDS, 01L DISG-HARGING BUOY- No. 289,720. Patented ec. 4, 18 83;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN sHIELDs, on PERTH, COUNTY on PERTH, SCOTLAND.
OIL-DISCHVARGING BUOY.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 289,720,'dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed August 25, 1882. (No model.) Patented in England March 8, 1882, X01112, and in France March 29, 1882 No.14s,1e0.
To all w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SHIELDs, of the city and county of Perth, North Britain, have invented Improvements in Means or Appara tus for the Protection of Harbors and Shipping, (for which I have received Letters Patent of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland No. 1,112, dated March 8, 1882, and also of the Republic ofFrance, No. 148,160, dated March 29, 1882,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means or apparatus for the protection of harbors and shipping, and has reference to the discharging of oil onto the surface of the sea, so as to produce a liquid surface, which is not broken by the action of the wind, as is the case when the wind acts violently upon the surface of the sea itself.
The improvements consist in charging buoys or beacons with oil, which isdischarged when required by opening a valve or valves in the said buoys or beacons. These valves may be opened or closed by communication with the land or any station, either by mechanical meanssuch as cranks, chains, orwires-or by electro-magnets or compressed air in a pipe or pipes.
My improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which represents abuoy, which at its upper part is provided with a tank, A, for the oil, andwhich may be charged or filled in any suitable manner. Around the lower part of this tank A, and through the sides of the buoy, are formed the openings B, fitted with valves of any suitable construction,
actuated from the inside by the cords or chains (represented in dotted lines 0) attached thereto, and passing over guides or rollers D down to a main rod or wire, E, passing out through the bottom of the oil-tank A and the bottom of the buoy through suitable water-tightj oints, and there attached to a chain, F, communicating with the shore or other station. It is evident that when the chain F is pulled, the valves fitted to the openings Bwill be opened and the oil contained in the tank A will fiow therethrough onto the surface of the sea until the chain F is released and the valves closed with an oil-reservoir having discharge-orifices,
in combination with means for opening and closing said orifices from a distance, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a buoy provided with a tank or reservoir, A, having discharge-orifices B, fitted by suitable valves, cords, or chains, 0, guide rolls D, and chains E F, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN SHIELDS.
