UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
MICHEL D. LUEHRS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BOLT-THREADIDNG DIUEQ SBECIEIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,674, dated December 4, 1883. l
Application filed July 31, 1es2. (No model.)
To ail whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHEL D. LUEHRS, of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Bolt-Threading Dies; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in bolt-cutter dies. Heretofore the cutters of bolt-cutter dies have been inserted in malleable-iron casings, the rear ends of which are grooved or flanged to fit correspondinglyshaped flanges or grooves in the sliding ring of the cutter-head, while the forward portion of the casing enters guideways formed in the barrel of the cutter-head, the cutter-dies projecting slightly beyond the inner end of the casing. This construction is defective and objectionable, owing to the fact that the casings, being composed of comparatively soft metal, will soon become worn at their sides and edges, this being due to iron chips and dust entering between the casings and walls of the 'guideways in the barrel, hence making it impossibleto preserve a nice and accurate fitbetween the casing and barrel, and consequently preventing the accurate adjustment of cutter dies desirable in this class of tools.
The object of my invention is to obviate the defects above noted, and to provide a boltcutter of such construction that the cuttingdies shall be retained against any lateral play and always retained in accurate adjustment; and with these ends in View my invention consists in the combination, with the barrel and die-ring of a bolt-cutter, of cutter-dies, eachconsisting of a steel cutter-shank having a cap removably secured to its rear end, said cap constructed and arranged to slide in grooves formed in the die-ring, and the barrel provided with guideways, within which snugly fits the shank of the cutter-dies.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view, partly in plan and partly in section, of a bolt-cutter constructed in accordance with my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and'4 are views in side elevation of dies embodying my improvement.
A is the barrel of the bolt-cutter, and D is the die-ring encircling the barrel. Within suitable grooves formed in the die-ring are inserted the caps O, 0, G and O of the cutterdies B, B, B and B These caps are secured to the outer ends of the shanks of the cutterdies in any desired manner-as, for instance, by screws thereby enabling the cutter-dies to be readily removed from the capswhen worn and renewed or replaced. The caps are constructed with inclined flanges, that fit correspondinglyinclined grooves in the die-ring, whereby endwise adjustment is imparted to the cutter-dies by sliding the ring backward and forward. The shank portions of the cutter-dies snugly fit within radial slots in the barrel; and in view of the fact that the shanks are of hardened steel and smoothly finished, an accurate and close fit is secured betweenthe cutter-dies and the walls of the radial slots in the barrel of the cutter. By means of this construction and arrangement of parts, an accurateadjustment of the cutter-dies is preserved, and whenever the cutter-die is renewed or replaced a new and finished surface on its shank portion is finished to the walls of the barrel; hence it v will be observed that although the cap may become worn by long continued use and have considerable play in the die-ring, the shank portion of the cutter-die will be retained against'any lateral or vertical displacement, and thus insure accurate work by the die.
7 Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
In abolt-threader, the combination, with the barrel having radial slots, and the die-ring encircling the barrel and provided vwith inclined grooves, of threading-dies having caps constructed to engage the inclined groove in the die-ring, the shank portions of the threading-dies snugly fitting within the radial slots' in.the barrel, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
' MICHEL D. LUEHRS.
