SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,650, dated December 4, 1883.
- Application filed June 16, 1883. (No model.)
ence being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to machines for cleansing dishes, clothes, and other articles of that class in which the water is agitated.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and generally efficient machine that will perform its functions speedily, and will require but very little expenditure of operating power.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same, giving aside View, partly broken away, of the conducting-pipe. Fig. 3 is avertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line of the screw. Fig. 4 is avertical transverse sectional view taken in front of the screw-casing.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a vessel or tank adapted to contain the water, and of any suitable shape or construction. In this vessel is arranged a suitable conductingpipe, B, into which the water in the tank can only find ingress at the bottom of the latter. This pipe preferably comprises a pipe, C, extending horizontally alongl the bottom of the tank to one corner thereof, and havingawide flat mouth, D, at the center of the tank. From the horizontal section of pipe C extends a vertical section, E, to nearly the top of the vessel, where it connects with a longitudinal tube, F, that preferably inclines fromthe pipe E, and has a closed end, G, at the side of which is provided an opening or mouth, H, and from which projects an auxiliary tube, I, that forms a bearing for the operating end of the shaft .I of the Archimedean screw K, that is arranged in the tube F, and has bearings L in the other and of thelatter, as shown. The Arehimedean screw is adapted to be operated by a crank, M, or any other suitable power, and in the case of small machines, for washing dishes, 8vo. the
is located. As herein shown, it is at the cen.-
ter, and this location is best adapted for small vessels, as it creates a strong suction; but in large vats for tanning hides, for bleaching, &c., the water should lind ingress to the tube at one end of the vat and be discharged at the other.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated. The clothes, dishes, &c., will be quickly cleansed by the action of the water and by their resistance to the saine, and can suifer no damage by tearing or otherwise. In tanning, the frequent handling of the hides is obviated, because the machine will serve to extract the tannin from the bark better than any other process of which I am cognizant, since the hides can be placed in the water and the ground bark added as it becomes necessary to strengthen the ooze. Besides, the device is very simple and inexpensive in construction and convenient in operation.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the vat or receptacle, the conducting-tube arranged therein, and comprising a horizontal bottom section having the flat mouth, a perpendicular section arranged at one corner of the vat, vand a main section extending longitudinally and inclined from the perpendicular section, and having the opening or mouth, and an Archimedean screw arranged in this main portion and having bearings at its ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES ALEXANDER HARRIS.
