FOUNDRY-LADLE GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,499, dated December 4, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Bier-IARD BRowN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, county of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foundry-Ladle Gears; and I do hereby declare the following to be a description of the same, and of the manner of constructing and using the invention7 in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms as to enable any person skilledin the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which `form a part of the specification.
Figure l is a front view of the ladle and gear. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a detail plan. Fig. 4L is a detail view, showing in longitudinal vertical section the connecting extremities of the hand-wheel shaft and bevel-wheel shaft.
A is the ladle. B and B2 are the hangers, and C the yoke that unites them at their top extremities. These in combination compose the sustaining framework of the ladle and its attachments. f

i into which hooks the chain from the swinging crane. The upper portions, Z1, of the hangers B and B2 are cylindrical. The lower portions, b', are square, for the better securing of the "frame-bracket I2.
The trunnion E2 passes entirely through the journal-box F, and is rigid with the wormwheel G. This worm-wheel G is rotated by the worm H, which is rigid on the shaft I, located above said worm-wheel. This worm shaft I has its bearings in the bracket I2, which .is provided with an arm, F, having a sleeve,
I", that receives and sustains the driving-shaft J. The front end of the worm-shaft I has rigl idly secured to it the bevel-wheel K, which meshes in with the smaller bevel-wheel K2. This latter bevel-wheel is rigid on the inner end of the driving-shaft J. The shaft J works in the sleeve I4. The bracket I2 is firmly secured to the hanger B2, above the axle, by bolts b2. The drivingshaft J has a collar, 9', forged on it, adapted to hold it more steady,
said collar being litted between sleeve I4 and shaft J2.
J2 is a hand-shaft provided with the fixed hand-wheel M. By this hand-wheel, with its connected mechanism, as described, the ladle is upset. The inner end of this hand-shaft is bossed and tubular, adapted to fit over and onto the outer end of the drivingshaft J, where it is locked by a cotter, N, passing through suitable slots, n. By the removal of the cotter the hand-shaft, with its wheel, can be removed out of the way when desired.
The described upsetting-gear can be afiixed to either side of the ladle, and the adaptation of its parts is such as to cause the operator to stand on the side ofthe ladle in clear and unobstructed view of the discharging-spout, thus enabling him fully to oversee his work.
What I claim is- I. In a ladle-gear adapted to be suspended from a crane, the combination, with hangers B B2, trunnion E2, journaled in its lower extremity, and bracket I2, projecting outwardly from said hanger, of worm-wheel G, mounted on said trunnion,wormshaft I, mounted in the main body of the bracket, and driving-shaft J, mounted iu sleeve I, formed on arm I of said bracket, substantially as set forth.
2. In a ladle-gear adapted to be suspended from a crane, the combination, with trunnion E2, journaled in the lower extremity of hangers B B2, and bracket I2, projecting outwardly from said hanger above journalbox F, of worm-wheel G, rigid on said trunnion, worm shaft I, located above the worm wheel and mounted in the main body of the bracket, and driving shaft J, mounted insleeve It, formed on said arm I3 of the bracket, substantially as set forth.
3. In a ladle-gear, thecombination, with ICO shaft I, driving-shaft J, having collar j, and
hand-shaft J 2, substantially as set forth.
4. In a ladlegear, the combination, with hangers B B2, bracket I2, formed. With arm I3, 5 having sleeve I4, and Worin-shaft I, of driv ing-shaft J, having collar j, hand -shaft J2, 'formed With a tubular end fitting on the driving-shaft, and Cotter N, looking in slots n, substantially as Set forth.
