UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
GEORGE BOARDMAlVWEBB, OE NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
' DEVICE FOR MAKING LANTERN-PINIONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,478, dated December 4, 1883, Application filed March 13, 1883. No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
' Be it known that LGEORGE B. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Pinion-Filling Machine, of which the followingis a specification. a
The object of my invention is to furnish a tool that will, supersede the purely-manual operation at present employed in filling lantern-pinions. l
The invention consists of a the needles in the grooves, a collar carrying wires to force the needles throughthe grooves, and a cup or reservoir from which the needles are fed to the grooves, as hereinafter described and claimed. i
In the drawing, A is the rod, having is lower portion grooved to receive the needles, the upper portion or shank serving as aguide to the collar b, and also to carry the two stops, 6 and e. b is a collar sliding on the shank of A, and carrying wires corresponding in number to the grooves in which theyslide. c is a sleeve, which is fitted over the lower portion of A, covering the grooves. The lower portion of c is divided by longitudinal slots, allowing the divisions to be bentinwardsamewhat, and thus act as springs, to prevent the needles from dropping through. The cup (1 is fitted looselyon the sleeve 0. The cup (1 rod having grooves to guide the needles,,a sleeve to keep and bracket 9 should be fixed to a vertical standard.
The machine is operated as follows: The cup is filled with pinion-needles. The rod is lowered until the uncovered part of the grooves is immersed in the needles, then moved gently until the needles, falling in of their own weight, fill the grooves. The pinion to be filled is then placed, with its pivot. in the center of the rod, and the collar, with wires brought down, forcing the needles into the pinion. This operation is repeated with successive pinions until the grooves are emptied.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination. in a pinion-filling ma chine. of a rod, A, having grooves equal in and wires 1), sliding upon said rod, all substantially as set forth.
