Claims priority, application Switzerland October 7, 1952 22 Claims. (Cl. 235-40) The present invention relates to a calculating machine and more particularly to a machine for carrying out the four basic arithmetical operations.
An object of the invention is to provide a keyboard with a greatly reduced number of keys for control of each of the said operations.
Another object is to provide in combination with a reduced keyboard of, for example, ten keys, a registering device carried by a suitable carriage adapted to be moved from right to left by the manipulation of the respective keys.
Another object is to provide a novel registering device having a set of toothed registering members angularly displaceable one with respect to the other, said members each being rigidly secured to a pinion, whereby the axes of the registering members are movable in parallel relation between two positions, namely, a trans fer position for which the registering toothed members may mesh with pinions operatively associated with the reading members of a totalizer, and a registering position of the registering members, which are mechanically converted by driving members controlled by the manipulation of keys of the reduced keyboard, each respective key controlling the driving member to extents proportional to the serial numbers carried by each respective key manipulated and locked by a locking device for a predetermined time of transfer resulting from the angular positions of the registering member.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly summarized in the appended claims, it being expressly understood that there is no intent to limit the invention to the details of construction, except as come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.

According to the attached drawing, the calculating machine comprises a casing 1 adapted to cover and protect the members of the machine which are supported by a frame B. Extending from said casing is a crank 2 (see Figure 1). A reduced keyboard of ten keys generally designated as 3, carries the digits from 0 to 9 which are arranged for the manipulation of the numbers which should be introduced into the machine, and a keyboard of keys 4a, 4b, 4c, 4e, 4 4g, 4h, 4i, 4 4k are provided for the control of the different operations. Further, the casing 1 includes three windows 5, 6 and 7. The window S exposes an indicator V reproducing the last number entered in the machine. The window '7 exposes a figure of each of the reading members 9 of a totalizer T, while the window 6 exposes a figure of each of the reading members of a counting device C.
A motor M is connected by means of a clutch and of a reversing device generally designated 8 in drivable connection with the different members of the machine through a belt drive.
The ten keys 3 carrying the digits from O to 9 of the manipulating keyboard actuate a mechanism causing the registering of the actuated number. This mechanism (see Figure 3) comprises ten transmission devices, each similar to the other and each being connected to one of the ten keys 3. Each transmission device comprises a rod 12 fastened to one of the respective keys 3. Said rods 12 are mounted to studs in guides (not shown) providcd on the frame B of the machine. Each rod 12 is mechanically connected by the intermediary of a lever 13 oscillating on an axis 14 carried by the frame, to a push rod 15 connected to a spring 16 and sliding in guides (not shown) carried by the frame B. Each push rod 15 carries a nose 17 which actuates a finger 18 laterally extending from each of the push rods 15, connected to the keys 3 carrying the digits from 1 to 9. Said common finger 18 is rigid and contacts with lever 19 connected to a spring 20 and pivoted on an axis 21 carried by the frame. Said lever 19 carries an actuating tip or arm 22 for a pawl and ratchet arrangement hereinafter described.
Each push rod 15, connected to a key carrying one of the digits from 1 to 9, carries further a stop plate 23, the distance a of which (Figure 11a) from a horizontal plan of reference b is variable as a function of the digit number carried by the particular key 3 with which it is connected.
The push rod 15, connected to the key carrying the digit 0, carries a nose or lug 24 (Figure 3) actuating a lever 25 pivoted on the axis 21. Said lever 25 is also actuated by the manipulation of the keys 3 carrying the digits from 1 to 9, by the intermediary of a tip 24a rigidly fastened to the lever 19. Said lever 25 carries an actuating finger 26 causing the step by step advance of a carriage 27 (Figure 4) carrying the different members of a registering device E.
The carriage 27 comprises two mounting plates 28 (see Figure 2). These plates are slidably mounted along guides and connected one to the other by means of intermediate members 29 (Figure 2) and by a carrier 30 (Figure 4). The carrier 30 is provided with a toothed rack 31, which toothed rack cooperates with an escapement pawl 32 (Figure 5) and a retaining pawl 33 hinged on a carrier 34. The carrier 34 carries sleeves g engaged over a tube 37 and constitutes, with mounting plates 35 connected one to the other by intermediate members 36, a great carriage 16 or a relatively larger second carriage than said first carriage 27 adapted to slide along said tube 3'7. An oscillating lever 33 is fastened to each of the respective extremities of said tube 37, which is freely mounted on a control shaft 39 carried by the frame B of the machine. The said first small carriage 27 is driven during the displacements of the great or large carriage 16 through the escapement pawl 32 in mesh with the toothed rack 31. Said escapement pawl is actuated by the finger 26 against the action of a return spring 10. Thus, by the lowering of a key 3, the small first carriage 27 is actuated under the action of a spring (not shown) one step forward with respect to the said larger second carriage 1h.
The oscillating levers 38 each carry a rotatable sleeve It crossed by a shaft 41 along which slides a sleeve 42 (Figure 6) provided with side walls 43 and located between the mounting plates 28 of the first carriage 27 in order to be driven by the displacements of said first carriage 27. On said sleeve 4-2 are mounted side by side the registering members constituted by toothed sectors 44, of which only one is shown in the drawing, each being rigidly fastened to a pinion 415 revolving freely on said sleeve 42.
One of the extremities of the control shaft 39 (see Figure 4) carries a cog wheel 72 cooperating with a pawl '71 rigidly fastened to a control member 46 rotating freely on the shaft 39. Said control member 46 presents two toothed sectors 47a, 47b connected by convex surfaces 48a, 48b. Said control member 16 is in mechanical connection with a driving member 49 provided with two toothed sectors 51M and 56b located at 180 one from the other and connected together by concave surfaces 51a and 51b which may slide along the convex surfaces 48a, 48b of the control member 46. Finally, said control ember 46 presents further, a groove 52 (Figure 10) in which a finger 53 is engaged. Said finger is rigidly fastened to a lever 54 oscillating on an axis 55 carried by the frame. A connecting rod 56 connects the lever 54 to the lever 38. In Figure 10, the wall of the frame carrying the axis 55 is not shown for more clearness of the drawing.
The driven control member 46 causes, as described hereunder, on the one hand, the oscillation of the square shaft 41 around the control shaft 39 between two end positions, and on the other hand the rotation of said shaft 41 to the desired positions. For one of said end positions of the square shaft 41 (Figure 6) the toothed sectors 44 may mesh with driving pinions 2 of the totalizer T, which is described in detail in a companion application Serial No. 364,692, filed June 29, 1953. For the other end position of the square shaft 41 (Figure 11a), the pinions 45 mesh with teeth 57 of driving members 61, which are each individually displaceable vertically under the action of springs 58. Each member 61 presents two guiding slots 611 crossed by guides 59 carried by the mounting plates 28 of the first carriage 27. Each driving member 61, of which only one is shown on Figure 6, is provided with teeth 62. These teeth 62 have the shape of ratchet teeth and cooperate with a locking pawl 63, hinged on an axis 64 carried by the mounting plates of the carriage 27. The tail 65 of said pawl 63 is intended to be actuated by the actuating member 22 against the action of a return spring, not shown, and which tends to maintain said pawl 63 in mesh with the teeth 62.
Finally, each driving member 61 carries a third row of teeth 66 in mesh with a pinion 6'7 rigidly fastened to a drum 68 carrying the figures from to 9 regularly disposed along its periphery. Each drum 63 rotates freely on an axis 69 carried by the mounting plates 28 of the first carriage 27 and the set of said drums constitutes an indicator V located opposite the window through 4 which appears the last manipulated number registered by the registering device E, shown in Figure 4.
Each driving member 61 is provided with a heel 70, see Figures 1lal1e, intended to cooperate with the stop plates 23 carried by the push rods 15, so as to place the reading members of the indicator V and the registering members of the registering device E in angular positions corresponding to the particular digit carried by the manipulated key 3. When the operator lowers any one of the keys 3, for example, the key carrying the digit 2, he causes the setting into an active position of the second stop plate 23 (see Figure 111)) of the stack formed by the nine plates 23 carried by the push rods 15. The distance a of said second plate 23 from the reference plane b defined by the heels of the driving members 61 being in rest position (Figure 11a) is chosen in such a manner that a displacement of said member 61 of a distance equal to a causes an angular displacement c of the toothed sector 44 equal to twice the pitch of the teeth of said toothed sector 44.
The depression of a key 3 causes:
(a) The setting into active position of a stop plate 23, of which the distance from a reference plane b is a function from the digit of the manipulated key;
(b) The oscillation of lever 19, the tip 22 of which acts on the tail 65 of the first left pawl 63 of the registering device, in order to disengage the teeth 62 and to unlock the end left driving member 61 of the registering device. Said member 61 is then displaced vertically'by its return spring 58, up to a position defined by its heel '76 resting on the stop plate 23 set in active position. Finally, said member 61 drives the end left pinions 45 and 67 of the registering device and of the controller and causes an angular displacement of the end reading member 68 of the controller and of the end left registering member 44 of the registering device E, equal to a multiple of the pitch of the teeth of the pinion 67 and of the teeth of the sector 44, corresponding to the serial number carried by the manipulated key;
(0) The oscillation of lever 25, the tip 26 of which acts on the escapement pawl 32 and on the retaining pawl 33 in order to cause, on the one hand the disengagement of the escapement pawl 32 from the teeth of the toothed rack 31, and on the other hand, the engagement of the retaining pawl 33 with the teeth of said toothed rack, in order to retain the little carriage in its position, against the action of its return spring (not shown) as long as the key 3 is maintained in its lower position.
When the operator releases said depressed key 3, the spring 16 raises said key and returns the push rod 15 back again in its original position, to cause:
(a) The oscillation of lever 19, under the action of its spring and the return of pawl 63 in its locked position under the action of a spring, not shown, so as to maintain the reading members 68 of the indicator V and the registering members of the registering device E, in their new positions which are the function of the digit of the manipulated key;
(b) The withdrawal of the plate 23, which comes again in its rest position;
(0) The oscillation of lever 25 under the action of its return spring and thus the release of the pawls 32 and 33, which return again to their original position represented on the drawing, to cause the disengagement of the retaining pawl from the teeth of the toothed rack, the advance of a step to the left, of the little carriage 2.7 under the action of its spring, and finally the engagement of the escapement pawl 32 with the next tooth of the toothed rack.
Thus, during the rising of the manipulated key 3, the little carriage 27 has advanced one step to the left, and the second drivin member from the left is now located in registering position.
The manipulation of the key 3 carrying the digit 0,
causes only the advance of the little carriage 27 one step to the left, but does not cause the unlocking of one of the driving members 61.
In order to transfer onto the totalizer, the number registered by the registering device, the operator depresses a key 4e of the control keyboard. Key 4e is connected to conventional and well known mechanism, not shown nor claimed in this case, to cause:
(a) The positioning of the totalizer unit T in registering position with the sector members 44 of the registering unit;
([1) The starting of the motor M which drives and causes rotation of the control shaft 39.
The control shaft 39 rotates in the direction of the arrow the control member 46, by the intermediary of pawl 71 and of the cog wheel 72, to cause:
(a) The oscillation of the arms 38 and of the square shaft 41 around the shaft 39, whereby the concave part 51a of the member 49 and the convex part 48a of the member 48 slide one with respect to the other. The oscillation of the arms 38 is controlled by the finger 53 (Figure engaged in the groove 52. Thus the pinions 45 move off of the toothed racks 57 (Figure 11d) of the totalizer T. The toothed sectors 44 are rigidly maintained in their relative positions by a lock 73, guided by means of radial r formed in the two side walls 43 of the sleeve 42. Said lock is maintained in engagement with the teeth of the pinions 45 by springs v:
(b) The teeth 47a, in mesh with teeth 50a, cause the square shaft 41 to revolve about 180". During this 180 angular displacement, the earns 76 rigidly fastened to the frame and in mesh with the extremities 75 of the lock 73, maintain said lock in engagement with the teeth of the pinions 45, and the driving pinion e of the totalizer T is driven in an angular displacement of an amplitude or extent corresponding to the angular displacement imparted by the toothed sector 44 during the registering operation.
(c) At the end of the 180 angular displacement of the square shaft 41, the extremities of the lock 73 are located opposite notches 77 of the earns 76, so that said lock remains in mesh with the teeth of the pinions 45 only under the relatively weak action of the springs v:
(d) The concave part 51b slides along the convex part 48b during the time the shaft 41 is returned by the finger 53 engaged in the groove 52 back to an intermediate position for which the toothed sectors 44 and the pinions 45 are out of mesh with the pinions 56 and 57 (Figure lle);
(e) The teeth 47b mesh with the teeth 50b and cause a second angular displacement of 180 of the shaft 41. The toothed sectors 44 have then turned 360 and are again in their angular position corresponding to the manipulated number;
(f) The covex 48a slides under the concave part 51a during the time the finger 53, engaged in the groove 52, oscillates the shaft 41 back to its initial position in which the pinions 45 are in mesh with the teeth 57 of the driving members (Figure 11a). During said displacement of the shaft 41, the extremities 74 of the lock 73 bear against the inner sides of tips 75 fastened to the frame 28. Thus, when the shaft 41 is in registering position, the lock 73 is maintained, regardless of the biasing action of the weak action springs v, by means of the tips 74, out of reach of the teeth of the pinions 45.
Thus, the registered number has been transferred onto the totalizer T. If the operater desires to multiply said number through a whole number, it is only necessary for him to perform the operations a to f explained above the number of times equal to said whole number. The registered number on the registering device is then added to itself by the totalizer a number of times equal to said whole numb er.
The subtraction and the dividing operations are obtained by revolving said control member 46 in the direction of the arrow f, and by placing the totalizer and the large second carriage 10 in such a relative position that the teeth of the toothed sectors 44 may mesh with pinions e connected to the reading members 9 by an intermediary pinion in order to reverse the direction of rotation of said reading members (concerning said object see companion application).
The transfer operation being terminated, the operator causes the resetting to zero, i.e. the return back to their initial position of all the members carried by the small or first carriage 27, by an angular displacement of the control shaft 39 in the direction opposite to the arrow To this end, he may pull or push down one key 4d of the control keyboard or actuate the crank 2 counterclockwise.
By thus actuating the crank 2, the shaft 39 does not drive the control member 46; however, the shaft 89 is rotatably driven by means of a suitable well-known mechanical connection comprising pinions, not shown, mounted on the side of the machine opposite to the side illustrated on Figure 2. The shaft 89 is operatively connected to a cam 78 by means of one-way couplings 71a and 72a. This cam 78 is rotatably driven and acts on a runner K carried by one of the arms 79 (see Figure 12) connected to each other by means of a beam 81 which is U-shaped in cross section and oscillates around an axis supported by the frame. In the interior of the U-shaped beam, that is, between the legs of the U, are two fingers 82 having a roller bearing surface, of which only one is visible in Figure 12, carried by a bar 83 secured or formed from the base of two guide members 84. Each guide member 84 is formed with vertically spaced upper and lower elongated slots, said slots receiving the guide rods 59, which likewise extend through the guide slots 60 of driving members 61.
The bar 83 is movable downward by the oscillation of the arms 79 against the action of a suitable return spring, not shown. During such downward movement, the beam 81 engages with a heel or extension 86 (see Figure 6) formed from the foot or base portion in opposite alignment to extension or heel 70 of each of the drive members 61, whereby said members 61 are driven rearward until their initial position is reached (see Figures 11a and 12). The return of drive members 61 to their respective initial positions causes the resetting of the reading members of the indicator V to zero and also of the registering members 44 of the registering device.
To permit registering of a new number, it is necessary that the small and large carriages 27 and 10, respectively, be returned to their initial right-hand end starting positions. To effect this return simultaneously, the functions or operations controlled by the depression of the key 40 and described in the two paragraphs above take place and a suitable device of well-known type causes movement of the two carriages, until they are in their initial right-hand end position. Such device may comprise means, such as (a) a cable adapted to pull the small carriage 27 to the right, whereby the small carriage picks up the large carriage 10 in its return movement as soon as the small or little carriage 27 reaches its right-hand end position inside the larger carriage 1t); and (b) a drum on which said cable is wound, which is driven by the motor M of the machine, thus pulling the cable. Thus such a drum and cable arrangement would pull back the two carriages 10 and 27 to their original starting positions for registering a new number.
While certain novel features of the invention have been disclosed herein, and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. -In a calculating machine for carrying out the four basic arithmetical operations, the combination comprising frame means, a ten-key keyboard having keys depressibly mounted in the frame means, a carriage moved a step in the frame means by the operation of a key, members movably supported in the carriage and each indicating a digit corresponding to a key depressed, driving members movably mounted in the carriage and urged in a certain direction to each operate an indicating member, pawls movably mounted in the carriage means and each urged to engage a driving member for holding same in a certain position and operable by the key corresponding to the driving member for releasing same, stops movably mounted on the frame and each operable by the depression of a key and limiting the path of a driving member released from its pawl in proportion to the digit of the depressed key, transfer members each operated by a driving member simultaneously with the driving of an indicating member, a shaft supporting the transfer members and movable from a position in which the transfer members engage the driving members to a second position in which the transfer members are disengaged from the driving members, a totalizer mounted on the frame means and engageable with the transfer means in the second position thereof, means operating the transfer members in the second position and the totalizer engaged therewith, a sleeve axially and non-rotatably mounted on the shaft and carrying the transfer members and wherein the transfer members are gear sectors, a control shaft rotatably mounted in the frame means, a pair of arms swingable about the control shaft and carrying the shaft supporting the gear sectors, and a control member carried by the control shaft and swinging the arms and rotating the shaft carrying the gear sectors.
2. The combination according to claim 1 and wherein the control member is freely rotatable about the control shaft and also comprising a one-way clutch connecting the control member to the control shaft.
3. The combination according to claim 2 and wherein the control member comprises two gear sectors each rotating the gear sectors on their carrying shaft by 180.
4. The combination according to claim 3 and wherein the stops constitute a set of plates each connected to a key and the distance of each plate is proportional to the digit of the coordinated key.
5. The combination according to claim 4 and wherein each driving member includes a heel cooperating with a stop plate and wherein each pawl fixes the position of its driving member as defined by the stop.
6. The combination according to claim 5 and also comprising operable means for resetting the transfer gear sectors to Zero, actuating means connecting the resetting means to the control shaft and operating the resetting means upon rotation of the control shaft in a direction opposite that in which the control shaft drives the control member.
7. The combination according to claim 6 and wherein the actuating means comprises a cam and a one-way coupling connecting the control shaft to the cam.
8. The combination according to claim 7 and also comprising an axle fixed in the frame means, arms piv oted on the axle, a beam carried by the arms, the cam operating the beam and the beam driving the driving members when the driving members are connected to the transfer members.
9. In a calculating machine for carrying out the four basic arithmetical operations and comprising frame means, a keyboard of ten depressible keys (3) mounted in said frame means, and bearing the digit from 0 to 9, a carriage (d8, 29, 3%) moved a step in the frame means by the depression of any of said ten keys, a set of driving members at) movably mounted in said carriage and urged in a certain direction, indicating members each operatively connected to one of said driving members (v) and each indicating a digit corresponding to a key depressed, pawls (63) movably mounted in the carriage and each urged to engage a driving member (61) for holding same in a certain position and operable successively on the successive depression of any of said nine keys bearing the digit from 1 to 9 in order to release said driving members, the combination of nine stops (23) movably mounted on the frame means and each operable by the depression of one of said nine keys and limiting the path of a driving member released from its pawl in proportion to the digit of the depressed key, a set of rotative registering (E) and transfer members (44) mounted in said carriage, a shaft (41) supporting said registering and transfer members, a pair of arms (38) swingably mounted with respect to said frame means and carrying said shaft and displacing said shaft from a first registering position in which said registering and transfer members (44) engage each a driving member (61) and is driven by said driving member into an angular position corresponding to the digit of the depressed key, until a second transfer position in which said registering and transfer members (44) are disengaged from said driving members (61), a totalizer (T) mounted on said frame means and engagable with said registering and transfer members (44) located in said second position and actuating means driving said reigstering and transfer members in said second position in order to drive said totalizer engaged therewith.
10. The calculating machine combination according to claim 9 and also comprising a sleeve (42) mounted in said carriage and axially slidable along said shaft (41), but not rotatable around said shaft and wherein said registering and transfer members are gear sectors (44) loosely mounted on said sleeve, and wherein a locking device (v, h, 77, 4S) actuated by the rocking movement of said pair of arms (38) locks said registering and transfer members in their respective angular position with respect to said sleeve during their driving by said actuating means.
11. The calculating machine combination according to claim 10 and also comprising a control shaft (39) rotatably mounted in the frame means, said pair of arms being swingable to said control shaft, a control member (46) carried by said control shaft, and swinging the arms and rotating said shaft (41) carrying said set of gear sectors (44).
12. The combination according to claim 10 and wherein the control member is freely rotatable about the control shaft and also comprising a one-way clutch (g1, 72) connecting the control member to the control s aft.
13. The combination according to claim 12 and wherein the control member comprises two opposite gear sectors (47a, 4712) each rotating the set of gear sectors by arcuated parts (48a, 48b) of said control member connecting said two opposite gear sectors one to the other.
14. The calculating machine combination according to claim 13 and also comprising an actuating member fastened to said shaft and cooperating with said control member and wherein said actuating member comprises two opposite gear sectors (50a, 50b) and two arcuated parts (51a, 51b) connecting said two gear sectors one to the other, said arcuated parts of said control member cooperating each in the two arcuated parts of said actuating member in order to lock said shaft in two Well defined angular positions during its swinging movements.
15. The calculating machine according to claim 14 and wherein said shaft is movable in a third intermediary position for which said set of gear sectors (44) is simultaneously disengaged from the driving members (61) and from the totalizer (T), and wherein the first gear sector (47a) of said control member drives said set of gear sectors when the shaft in the transferring position in order to transfer the registered figure on the totalizer (T), whereas said second gear sector (47b) of the control member drives said set of gear sectors when the {4-1) is in said third intermediate position in order to turn the set of gear sectors (44) anew in its initial angular position, the gear sectors (44) of said set being locked remaining however each in its respective angular position corresponding to the figure registered.
16. The calculating machine according to claim 15 and comprising also earn means (52) carried by said control member (46), a lever (54) hinged to said frame means and mechanically connected with one of said arms (38) and a pin (53) fastened to said lever and in engagement with said cam means.
17. The combination according to claim 9 and wherein the stops (23) constitute a set of plates each connected to a key and operable in a service position by depression of the corresponding key.
18. The combination according to claim 17 and where in each driving member (61) includes a heel (70) and wherein the distance of each stop plate, when in service position, from one said heel is proportional to the digit of the coordinated key, said heel cooperating with the stop plate placed in service position and wherein each pawl (63) fixes the position of its driving member as defined by the stop plate.
19. The combination according to claim 12 and also comprising operable means for resetting the registering and transfer gear sectors to zero, actuating means connecting said resetting means to the control shaft (39) and operating the resetting means upon rotation of the control shaft in a direction opposite that in which the control shaft drives the control member (46).
20. The combination according to claim 18 and wherein the actuating means comprise an auxiliary shaft, driven by said control shaft, a cam and a one-way coupling connecting the auxiliary shaft to the cam.
21. The combination according to claim 20 and also comprising an axle fixed in the frame means, arms pivoted on the axle, a beam carried by the arms, the cam operating the beam and the beam driving the driving members back to the zero position when the set of driving members is connected to the set of registering and transfer members.
22. In a calculating machine for carrying out the four basic arithmetical operations, the combination comprising frame means, a keyboard for control of the different operations, a keyboard of ten keys to introduce a number in the machine, mounted in the frame, a carriage adapted to travel in the frame to the left in a step-by-step movement in response to the settings of said keys, a set of key driven members displaceably mounted in said carriage and responsive to said key settings, a set of registering and transfer members mounted in said carriage and driven by said key driven members, the combination of a totalizer controlled by said registering and transfer members and comprising a set of numeral wheels indicating the result of an operation, first and second actuating means connected to each of said numeral wheels, said first actuating means being connected to drive said numeral Wheels in a positive direction and said second actuating means being connected to drive said numeral wheels in a negative direction, means for displacing said totalizer in front of said registering and transfer members from a first and adding position for which said registering and transfer members engage said first actuating means, to a second and subtracting position for which said registering and transfer members engage said second actuating means, a control shaft, a sleeve mounted in said carriage and slidable along said shaft, said registering and transfer members being each loosely mounted on said sleeve, lock means to lock angularly with respect to said control shaft each of said registering and transfer members, and swingable arms carrying said control shaft and displacing said shaft from a first registering position for which said registering and transfer members are in engagement with said key driven members to a second position, said second position permitting said registering and transfer members to engage said first or said second actuating means, respectively, of said numeral wheels according to the position assumed by said totalizer.
