' lNVf/VTOF FNITED STATES EVERETT L. LAKE, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
LOOK FOR FIRE-ARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,423, dated December 4, 1883,
Application filed March 26, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, EVERETT L. LAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Syracuse, county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gun and Pistol Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gun or pistol locks; and it consists of cutting dovetailed notches or mortises in either the tumbler or in the hammer-tumbler of the lock, and of adding a hook or dovetail tenon to the sear, the latter being small enough to enter the mortise or notch in the same manner as if the mortise and tenon were square.
The object of my invention is to set the hammer and thus prevent the possibility of an accidental discharge, and I attain these objects by mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the side view of a gunlock assembled; Fig. 2, a side view of the hammer-tumbler, sear, and trigger, showing the device where the sear connects directly with the hammer-tumbler and sets it; Fig. 3, the sear with tenon thereon and trigger. Fig. 4 shows part of the lock mechanism seen in Fig. 1, with the additional device to set the hammer at full-cook.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
In Fig.1, t is the tumbler and a the dovetail notch or mortise cut therein. sis the scar, and d the hook or dovetail tenon added thereto and entered in the mortise a, and b and c are the back and front sides of the tenon (Z, and H is the hammer-tumbler. T is the trigger.
In Fig. 5, s is the sear; p, the pin extending at right angles from the side at the nose of the sear, the nose entering into the notch a of the tumbler when the hammer is at full-cook; h, latch attached to the tumbler with operatinglever extending back to the trigger, and having the end of the latch provided with the hook 2, which hook passes under the pin 19 of the sear as it enters the notch a. In the lock assembled I undertake to draw the hammer back in the usual manner for cocking, and the edge 22 of the hook or tenon 01 engages the corresponding dovetail mortise just back of it, as shown in Fig. l, and it is impossible to cook the hammer; or I undertake to crowd the (No model.)
hammer forward with the same result. I pull back simultaneously upon the trigger and hammer, and cl is withdrawn from a and I can cook the hammer, and when the hammer is at full-cock the book i of the latch holds the pin 12 of the soar in the notch a until it is removed by the trigger throwing up the lever of the latch as it is drawn back to discharge the gun or on guns and pistols where the hammer is cooked by pulling back the trigger, the pulling back of the trigger is all that is -necessary to disengage the hook d from the notch a.
It is apparent that the only way the hammer can be cooked is by the use of the hammer and trigger.
I am aware that a square mortise and tenon have been used in certain locks to set the hammer; but where the sear and trigger are combined the fulcrum is below the notch, and a blow or drawback up on the thumb-piece easily throws out the tenon, while with my device the cooking is impossible without use of the trigger.
I claim 1. In combination, the tumbler t, having dovetailed mortise a and notch a, with sear 8, having dovetailed tenon d to enter the mortise and notch, and having pin 19, and the latch h having hook i to catch under the pin, and operating-lever resting upon the trigger to set the hammer at half and full cock, as
shown and specified.
2. In a lock for fire-arms, the latch h, having a lever resting upon the trigger, and a hook to swing over a pin extending from the nose of the scar and to hold the nose of the sear in the notch a, and, in combination with the notch a of the tumbler, set the hammer at full-cock, as shown, and for the purposes specified.
3. In a lock for fire-arms, the combination of a sear or trigger having a dovetailed tenon with a plate connected to the hammer, and
provided with a dovetailed mortise which re- EVERETT L. LAKE.
