HAY-TEDDER.
SPECIFICATION forlnllg part Of Letters Patent N0. 289,382, dated. December 4, 1883.
' Application filed March 31,1883. (No model.)
To all whom) t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID WV. BovEE, of Richland Centre, in the county of Richland and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIay-Tedders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speci'cation, and in which-` Figure l is a perspective View of my improved hay-tedder. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal vertical section of the same, and Figs. 3 andc are detail views illustrating the construction of certain parts of the machine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
In the accompanying drawings, A desig! nates the frame of the machine, which is mounted upon the axle B, having the wheels C C. D is the tongue, the rear end of which is fastened upon the axle B by a bolt, b, and is provided with hounds or braces E E. The tongue is inserted through `a yoke, F, bolted to the front part of the frame, and is provided with a lever7 G, having a spring-pawl, H, which is adapted to engage` a segmental rack, I, secured upon the front part of the frame.V By means of this lever G, in conjunction with the spring-pawl H and segmental rack I, the pitch of the machine may be raised or lowered at will from the drivers seat, which is shown at J. The double-tree K and whiletrees L are attached to the tongue in the usual manner. Journaled in bearings a, fastened to the under side of frame A, back of the axle, is a shaft, M, having four arms, N, at opposite ends, crossing each other at right angles. In the outer ends of each of these arms are bearings or boxes O, in which the arms N' are hung. These arms are provided with curved teeth P, and areprovided on their projecting outer ends with catches Q, which are adapted to engage the offsets B on the semicircular segment S," which is bolted to the under side of the machine,l on one or both of the side beams of the same. Each of the boxes O 5o has a slot, n, in which works a pin or projection, m, which is fastened in the rounded part of arm N', as will be seen more clearly by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings. This pin or stud m, working` in the slot n, limits the play or throw of the rake-arm N', as this is being actuated by the catches Q striking `against the ofsets R. The side pieces of the `frame are connected at the rear end by the `clearer-bar T, which has a series ofinward projections, t, adapted to fit into the spaces between the rake-` teeth P; and shaft M is provided with a pulley, U, which receives a rotary motion from the large pulley V on the drive wheel by means of an endless band'or belt, W.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation t of my improved hay-tedder will readily be understood. As the machine advances over the eld to scatter the hay for the purpose of exposing it to the air and sunlight, the rake-reel is rotated, and the teeth upon its arms N' are,
by its catches Q engaging the Voffsets R upon the guide-segment S, turned so as to catch the hay and carry it around until the upper part of segment S is reached, when the catch is again released from the guide-segment S,which turns arm N' in such a position as to drop the hay. If any hay should still adhere to the teeth, it will be removed therefrom by the teeth passing between the projections ton the clearer-bar T. r
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a hay-tedder, the combination of the frame A, having segmental guide S, provided with offsets R B, the rotary rake-reel `having rake-arms N', provided with the pins m, teeth I), and catches Q, and the arms N, provided with the slotted boxes or bearings O, constructed and combined to operate substantially in the` manner and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a haytcdder, the rotary reel consisting of the central shaft, M, having pulleyU, arms N, provided with slotted boxes O at their outer ends, arms N', having teeth I), and provided with the pins or studs m, for controlling their play in the slotted boxes, and means for partly rotating the rake-arms in their boxes or Ico I bearings by the revolution of the reel, substan- 3. The improved hay-tedder herein shown and described, consisting ofthe frame A, fixed' upon the axle B, and provided with the clearer-bar T at its rear end, tongue D, provided with means for adjusting the pitch or elevation of the front part of the machine, drive-Wheels C, having pulley V, endless band WV, segmental guide S, provided With the offsets R R, and rotary reel composed ofthe eentral shaft, M, having,` pulley U, arms N, having` slotted boxes O, and movable rake-arms N', having the pins m, and catches Q, the whole constructed and combined to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claimthe foregoingas my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in 2o presence of two witnesses.
DAVID XV. DOVEE.
