HARVESTER-REEL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No, 276,148, dated April 24, 1883,
v Application filed September 28, 1882. (No model.)
and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesters,
of which the following is a specification, refer ence being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in harvester-reels; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of various parts of the reel, whereby said reel may be shifted to different positions, all of which will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my harvester. Fig. 2 represents a cross-sectional view of the same.
The letters A A designate the two uprights in rear of the machine, which are connected at their lower ends by the frame a, on which the same is supported, and atthe top said uprights are connected and braced by means of a horizontal bar, a, that is provided on each end with a segment, a that meshes with segments a a at the rear ends of the reel-bars a a Said bars are connected to one another at their rear ends by a horizontal bar, a which carries at one end an upwardly-bent arm, a, and at the other end a hand-lever, a".
B indicates a horizontal bar, the'rear end of which is secured to the inner upright, A, and the opposite end is suitably attached to the main frame of the machine. Said bar has arising therefrom and near the centerthereof a standard, I), which is forked at its upper end, in which is pivoted one of the reel-bars a, and near the front end said bar is provided with a slotted standard, b, in which theforward end of one of the reel-bars works and is guided in its up and downward movement thereby. The outer reel-bar a is pivoted to the forked upper end of an inclined standard or bar, 11 secured to the frame of the machine, as shown at b in the drawings. The reel-bars e a are each provided with guide-loops I) b b I), through which slide two bars, b b ,one on each of the reel-bars, as shown, and the outer ends of these sliding bars are provided with bearin gs b I), in which is placed the ends of the reel-shaft 0 which has on its inner end a pulley, c, that connects by an endless band or chain, c, with a pulley, c", on the operating-shaft, that receives its lllO- tion from the mechanism of the machine. The sliding bars 11 b are provided at their rear ends with eyes 0 0 in which one end of the connecting-links 0 c are pivoted, while the opposite end of said links are connected to the bent arm a? and the hand-lover a on the 1 shaft or bar a To the side of the standard I) is pivoted the rear end, 0 of a bar, 0, which is provided in its forked free end 0 with a grooved pulley, c, 6 that bears against or upon the belt or chain aforesaid, thereby keeping the latter taut.
Having given a description of the different parts of which my invention relates, I will now explain the operation of the same in shifting the reel to different positions.
When it is desired to raise or lower the reel the operator may grasp the hand-lever d on the rock-shaft a, and byeither giving it a backward or forward movement causes the segments a on each end thereof to raise or lower the reel-frame by the same rocking upon the pivot in the forked standards 1) b and when adjusted the reel and reel-frame is held in position by the spring-pawl d engaging the teeth of the semicircular plate (1 secured to the inner standard, A. 1n shifting the reel backward or forward the hand-lever a may be thrown in either direction back or forth, which has the effect of operating the sliding bars 8 1) simultaneously, and when in the desired po sition the spring-pawl d engages the teeth of the plate d thereby securing the hand-levera' and reel in place.
It will be seen that the reel may be adjusted 0 in four different positionsviz., an upward, downward, forward, and backward-and when so adjusted can be held in place by the levers a and (I. At the same time the belt-tightener c keeps the belt always taut for operating the 5 reel.
What Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a harvester, the combination of the reel-bars a a having the loops b sliding bars If, carrying the reel-shaft b haviu g bearings I), connected by the links 0 to the lever a", the
rock-shaft a having bent arm a, the shaft a, in combination with segments a a on the rockhaving segments a and hand-lever d of the shaft a, having hand-lever d, spring.pawl d, belt-tightener a, constructed as set forth, for and the slotted standard I), as shown and dethe purposes described. scribed.
5 2. In a harvester, the reel-frame consisting In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in 15 of the side bars, a, pivoted to the standards presence of two witnesses.
b b', the sliding bars b If, rock-shaft at", having KI'lTIL ANUNSEN. the bent arm a, and lever a connecting-links Witnesses: 0, and the segments a a", secured to the rear HENRY FITZGIBBON,
to end of the side bars, a a, operated upon and JAs. H. J ONES.
