Description

` i lUNirnn STATES PATENT OFFCEO tion of the upper end of the IVILLIAM J. BARR AND JOHN L.
NELSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,373, dated December 4,
Application filed December 28, 1832. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. BARR and JOHN L. NnLsoN, both citizens of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi` nois, have invented an Improvement in Faucets, of which the following is a specification, t0 Wit:
This invention relates to improvements in faucets; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set -forth.
`In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring `to the accompanying drawings, in which* Figures l and 2 are sectional views of two different styles` of faucets constructed as we shall describe.
A represents the shell of a faucet, which may be of any of `the usual and well-known forms. This faucet is provided with a conical valve-seat, a, just above which isa perforated bridge or guide, b, and also with the usual stuffing-box, B, on its upper side, and the outlet B.
C represents the make, as shown, of a conical piece of metal covered by a conical rubber washer, c. This valve is secured on the lower end of the rod C', which extends upward through the stuffing-box B, and terminates a short distance above the same. This valve-rod is formed with a shoulder, c', as shown, between which and the bridge b is arranged, around the rod, the spiral spring D, which tends to lift the y rod and keep the valve always seated.
The upper side of the valve is formed with a horizontal U -shaped projection, cl, in which is hinged the hand-lever E, formed with a slight upward bevel on its under side in rear of the pivotal point, as seen at c, and extending across the center of the stuiling-box,where it is formed, lwith a socket, e', for the recepvalve-rod, and thence the handle exten ds forwc rd a short distance, and is provided with a knob, E, on its the hand-lever be dispensed with valve, which we prefer to outer end. It will be observed that the valve is always normally seated by the combined pressure of the water behind the valve and `the spring upon its stem, and that when the hand-leverE is depressed the valve is thrown down and a free flow of water takes place. L
When' the valve is closed, the beveled rear end of the lever E fits snugly against the stuffing-box and prevents the lever being lifted, so as to disconnect it with the valvestem; and when this lever is depressed and the valve opened, the small space between the bevel c and the top of the faucet is inclosed by the U-shaped box or projection, in which the lever is hinged, and prevents the insertion of a wedge or other device to keep the valve down and allow the waste of water. The action of the valve is quick, and itis very closely and firmly seated, and may be made either conical, as shown, or of any other desired form. The valve is secured upon' the stem by a nut and screw-thread, as seen in the drawings, and may be easily replaced at any time when it becomes worn. It is obvious that the valve will operate the same if 'and the push-knob E be secured of the valve-rod.
This arrangement will also be found a very convenient one for gage-cocks applicable to steam-boilers or other similar positions.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a spring-faucet, the lever E, hinged to the shell, and having a'shortextension in rear of its pivotal point adapted to fit squarely against the shell when the valve is closed, and so prevent the lifting of the lever to disconnect the stem, substantially as described and shown.
2. In a spring-faucet, the lever E, having a socket for the reception of the valve-stem, and
extending a short distance in rear of its pivot, in combination with the shell A, provided with the U-shaped box or projection, in which the lever is hinged, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a faucet, the shell A, having valvedirectly to the end` seat a, brdge'b, and stufng-box B, having In testmonywhereof We affix our signatures the U-shaped projection or box d, in combin presence of two Witnesses.
nation with the valve C, stem C', having shoulder c', spiral spring D, and lever E, having a socket, e', and a beveled rear end7 e, hinged in the box d, al1 constructed and arranged to \Vtnesses:
operate substantially as and for the purposes J. E. STEVENSON, set forth. l FRANK JOHNSON.
