Description
WENDEBROOK.
HUB BAND.
Patented Nov. 27'. L883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. ENDEBROOK, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
HUB-BAND,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,339, dated November 27, 1883. Application filed July 5,1883. (N0 model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ENDE- BROOK, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Hub-Bands for Vehicle-Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of hubbands for vehicles whose muzzle is lined with gold or other fine metal.
My improved hub-band preferably tapers inwardly at the muzzle to a shoulder, and is usually made of malleable cast-iron. y a
To carry out my improvement, the hub-band is immersed, point downward, in molten tin or like fusible metal, so as to fill up the pores, and at the same time to present a metallic surface such as has affinity for the finer metal, which latter is then deposited, in any desired thickness, by the electroplating pro cess.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents in profile a portion of a vehicle-hub.
B represents, by axial section, a malleableiron hub-band; b, the mouth or muzzle, the same being so :formed interiorly as to taper inwardly from its front edge to a thick rib or shoulderin the manner shown, so as, without giving the band a clumsy appearance, to greatly strengthen and stiffen it where most needed, and so as, at the same time, to present the highly-ornamental gilt, silvered, or nickel-coated interior conspicuously to view. The melted tin is deposited on the band from its outer lip as far back as its shoulder, so as to close the pores of theband and provide metallic surface of a kind that will receive and retain the lamina C, of silver or other fine metal, deposited. Where desired, I apply tin plating and gold, silver, brass, or nickel coating to the outside also of the band.
This manufacture entirely dispenses with the customary costly processes of grinding and finishing prior to coating or plating.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and of my invention A hub-band having a coating of melted tin on the interior of the muzzle overlaid with a coating of fine metal, as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE W. ENDEBROOK. Witnesses:
CARL SPENGEL,
S. S. CARPENTER.
