1 Claim. (Cl. 120-28) The present invention relates to copy holders, and more particularly to copy holders for use with portable typewriters.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a copy holder combined with the cover of a portable typewriter and supported by the portable typewriter.
Another object of the invention is to provide a portable typewriter copy holder which can be adjusted horizontally with respect to the typewriter so that the copy may be positioned at varying distances from the eyes of the typist .to permit the most comfortable use of the device by each typist.
A further object of the invention is to provide a copy holder for portable typewriters which is inexpensive to manufacture, simple to attach, easy to use, and completely effective in its action.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of one of the attaching members, partially broken away and in section.
Figure 3 is a transverse cross-section taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, and more particularly to the preferred form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 through 3, the reference character T indicates generally a portable typewriter of conventional design having a combined carrying case and cover C.
The typewriter T is secured to and supported by a pair of elongated semi-cylindrical tubular members 10. A second pair of semi-cylindrical tubular members 11 are secured to the back of the cover C. The members and 11 have identical cross-sections and are equally spaced apart in parallel relation. A slot 12 extends through the upper fiat wall 13 of the member 10 and has a generally V-shaped spring 14 depending therethrough. Rivets 15 secure the outer ends of the spring 14 to the upper surface of the flat wall 13, as best shown in Figure 2.
A semi-cylindrical tubular shaft 16 is formed for telescopic sliding engagement within the member 10 and has a length equal to the length of the member 10. The shaft 16 has a flat upper surface 17 having a plurality of spaced detent recesses 18 formed therein for cooperation with the V-shaped spring 14. A knob 19 is secured to the outer end of the shaft 16 to serve as a handle for moving the shaft 16 within the member 10.
The members 11 on the cover C are provided with slots and spring clips (not shown) identical to the slot 12 and spring clip 14 on the member 10.
The cover C is provided with a spring clip 20 which is secured to the inner surface of the top of the cover C by means of securing elements 21. The spring clip 20 is adapted to engage and clamp copy 22 within the cover C, as illustrated in Figure 1.
In the use and operation of the invention, as illustrated in Figures 1 through 3, the shafts 16 are normally completely contained within the members 10 and held therein by means of the spring 14 engaging one of the detents 18. When it is desired to hold copy 22 for viewing by the typist, the shafts 16 are withdrawn partially from the members 10 until another of the detent recesses 18 is engaged by the spring 14. The cover C is then arranged so that the members 11 engage over the outer ends of the shafts 16 in telescoping arrangement, as best shown in Figure 1. Copy 22 is then clipped under the spring clip 20 and the typing can be carried out. Obviously, the shafts 16 can be adjusted with relation to the member 10 by engaging another of the detent recesses 18 with the spring 14 thus adjusting the distance between the type writer T and the cover 22.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In combination with a typewriter and a combined cover and carrying case therefor, a copy holder comprising a pair of tubular members secured in spaced parallel relation to the underside of said typewriter and extending from the front portion thereof to the rear portion thereof, a shaft slidably positioned in each of said tubular members, each said shaft being substantially coextensive in length with one of said tubular members whereby it may be substantially completely housed therein, a handle member on the end of each shaft adjacent the rear portion of the typewriter for imparting reciprocal movement to said shaft in said tubular member, resilient detent means secured to each of said tubular members, each said shaft having recesses therein for reception of said detent means to retain said shaft in fully housed position and in withdrawn position with respect to a respective one of said tubular members, a second pair of spaced parallel tubular members fixed to said combined cover and carrying case each in axially aligned relation to one of said first tubular members, resilient detent means secured to each of said second pair of tubular members for releasable engagement with one of said recesses in one of said shafts when in withdrawn position thereby to support said combined cover and carrying case in upright position rearwardly of said typewriter, and copy holding means mounted on said combined cover and carrying case.
