CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,314, dated November 27, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SMALL, of Jeffersonville, in the county of Clarke and State of Indiana, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Brakes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to car-brakes; and it consists in the peculiar construction and attachment of a brake-rod to a car platform or d frame, whereby it is adapted to be changed from a vertical to a horizontal position, and vice versa, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a car-platform, showing my brakerod attached. Fig. 2 is an end view, and Fig.
3 is a side elevation, of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken through Figs. 1 and 2, line a m. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the hinged journal used for supporting the brake-rod in a vertical position.
A is a car-platform. B is a brake-rod, which is provided with a ratchet-wheel, O.
D is a pivoted journal, through which the rod B passes, and in which the said rod is journaled.
E is a curved guide. One end of the guide is secured to the lower end of a bracket, F, and the other end is secured to the carplatform A. This guide Eacts to guide andsupport the lower end of the brake-rod B, and at the same time to allow the said end to slide between its sides.
G is a hinged journal, which acts to support the rod B in an upright or vertical position, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2. This support may be formed in any suitable manner, the preferred form being that illustrated in Fig. 5, the same consisting of a hinged journal, G, secured to the end of the car A, and acting to support the rod B in an upright or vertical position, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. This journal consists of a shelf,
the brake-rod B. A curved arm, 5 is pivotally secured at one end to the shelf, the other i end being provided with an eye adapted to receive the pin said pin also passing through an opening in the shelf, thus securing the brake-rod when in a vertical position.
H is a hook, in which the rod B rests when it is in a horizontal position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
I represents the pawl which is generally used on cars in connection with vertical brakerods, which, by engaging with the ratchetwheel thereon, acts to prevent the rod B from revolving when the brakes are set. To provide for. the brake-rod being held from revolving when it is in a horizontal position and the brakes are set, I provide a peculiar pawl, which consists of a rod, J, provided with two arms, a and 6, set at right angles to the body of the rod, and also at an angle one to the other, one arm, I), acting as a pawl, and the other arm, a, acting as a weight to hold the pawl engaged with the ratchet, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or out of engagement, as shown by dotted lines, same figures.
The operation of my device is as follows: The brake-chain is attached to the brake-rod B at a point above the guide E. The wheel at the upper end of the rod B is turned, and operates to revolve the rod B and wind the chain thereon, the rod being held from turning in the opposite direction by means of the pawl I when the rod is in a vertical position, and by means of the pawl a on the rod J. The rod is changed from a vertical to a horizontal position by releasing it (the rod B) from the hinged journal G and turning it toward the hook H and letting it rest therein. This changing of the brake-rod B is desirablewhen the car is loaded with lumber or like freight, when the said rod would be liable to become broken off or bent.
What I claim is 1. A brake rod provided with suitable bearings and adapted to be arranged for operation in both vertical and horizontal substantially as set forth.
2. The combination,with a brake-rod adapted to be changed from avertical to a horizontal position,of a curved guide adapted to guide and support the end of said brake-rod, substantially as described.

4. The combination,with a brake-rod adapted to be changed from a vertical to a horizontal position, of the rod J, provided with arms 10 a and b, and adapted to act as a pawl when the rod is in a horizontal position, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
