Description

June 30, 1959 A. SICKREY CARRIER AND TRIVET Filed March 6, 1957 x INVENTOR flbdou x -/2 BY \X Z w 6 A ORNEY United States Patent O CARRIER AND TRIVET Abdou Sickrey, Grand Rapids, Mich. Application March 6, 1957, Serial No. 644,361
6 Claims. 01. 224-46) The present invention relates to a trivet and carrier of simple, economically produced structure which, in addition to its use under a dish or other container to protect a table or other surface from high heat and temperature, is quickly and easily converted into a practical and effective carrier for the dish or the like. Of course, it is not required that the article supported or carried be at a high temperature, as its protective and carrying functions appear at all temperaturesv of the article supported or carried.
It is an object and purpose of the present invention, to provide a practical, simple, sturdy and economical trivet and carrier, readily fabricated as to its parts and easily assembled.
An understanding of the invention may be had from the following description of a preferred construction of the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which, r
Fig. 1 is a plan of the trivet and carrier in its fiat, collapsed form in which it may be used as a support for an article placed thereon.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3' is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the first step followed in changing to a carrier.
Fig. 4 is a like view showing the position of the parts on the next succeeding conversion step.
Fig. 5 is an elevation illustrating a following step after that shown in Fig. 4 as the trivet is changed into a carrier.
Fig. 6 is an elevation of the carrier that is finally produced, and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of a detail of structure showing the pivotal connection of one end portion of the carrier hand engaged member to one of the sides of the completed carrier.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
In construction, a base ring 1 of wire rod shown as circular is provided, made from a length of the rod. The ends where brought together may be connected in any suitable manner after assembly of the additional parts used. While shown as circular, the base member is not necessarily of such form but may be of other forms without departing from the invention.
On such base member two U-shaped members are mounted on opposite sides thereof also made from wire rod. One has two parallel sides 2 integrally connected at one of the ends thereof by a connecting section 3. Adjacent the other or free ends of tl-e sides 2, coils 4 are made, through which the base rod passes, beyond which coils are terminal legs 5 at the ends of which foot members of rubber, felt or the like are attached. Such legs, as in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive extend below the member 1 and at their lower ends may rest against a supporting surface in use.
The coils 4 are at a side of the member 1 and the sides 2 extend toward the diamerically opposite side. A second U-shaped member is similarly mounted. It has two parallel sides 6, spaced fat-her apart than the sides 2,
ice
connected integrally near the coils 4 by a connecting section 7. Coils 8 near the fre: ends of the sides 6 are made through which the base rod 1 passes. Like terminal legs 9, with foot members thereon extend beyond the coils 8 as shown.
The U-shaped members in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are horizontal with the section 7 of the second U-shaped member across and above the sides 2 of the first described U-shaped member. Such U-shaped members are pivotally mounted at opposite sides of the base open frame 1 and extend across the open frame 1 toward but short of the diametrically opposed sides, as shown.
The trivet and carrier is completed by a bar of metal of channel form, having a web 10 with flanges 11 extending from the longitudinal side edges thereof. At each end the flanges are formed with hooks 12. Such hooks may detachably connect with opposite sides of the base member 1 (Fig. 2), the channel bar being securely held against accidental disconnection. It is detachable, however, the member 1 being of yieldingly resistant material which may be strained sufiiciently to permit such disconnection.
The channel bar is adapted to be located across the base member 1 substantially midway between the sides 2 and 6 of the U-shaped members. Where it crosses the connecting rection 3, recesses 13 in flanges 11 are made, as
, shown, section 3 passing through said recesses. A tongue 14, struck from the web 10, is bent (Fig. 7) to embrace such section 3, whereby a loose pivotal connection is made of the channel bar to the first described U-shaped member.
Where the channel bar passes across the section 7, notches 15 are made in the flanges 11, the section 7 passing through the notches when the channel bar is connected to the base 1, as in Figs. 1 and 2.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the U-shaped members are horizontal, extending across the base member 1 from opposite sides. The channel bar is also horizontal, over the sections 3 and 7, and the hooks 12 at the ends of such bar are releasably connected to opposite sides of the base. As thus positioned the structure may serve as a trivet, on which any desired article may be placed and held above the surface of top of a table, cabinet or the like on which placed.
To convert and change to a carrier the channel bar is first disconnected from the base member 1, as in Fig. 4. Either end of such channel bar may be first disconnected followed by disconnection of the opposite end. The U-shaped members are then turned upwardly and the channel bar turned clockwise through the full line position to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 5. Sides 6 being wider spaced than sides 2, such sides 2 with connecting section 3 and the attached channel bar may be passed between such sides 6 and the parts moved to the position in Fig. 6. The channel bar is turned over, being turned about the section 3 through one hundred and eighty degrees. The U-shaped members are substantially vertical and the section 7 connecting the sides 6 is seated in the notches 15. Articles resting on the base 1 are readily carried, the channel bar with its web 10 presenting a smooth under surface for hand engagement.
The construction described is novel, simple to fabricate and assemble, sturdy and effective in use. As mentioned the circular form of the base may be varied. The open base is adapted to have many different forms and types of cross supports added thereto when used as a carrier if wanted, where cross supports are no part of the present invention.
The invention is defined in the claims appended hereto and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within the scope of such claims.
I claim:
