UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK E. HALLIDAY, OF GEIGERSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
CLAMP FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,252, dated November 2'7, 1883.
Application filed June 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it -may concern:
Be itknown that I, F. E. HALLIDAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geigersville, in the county of Carter and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to book-clamps; and its object is to hold books of all description open while reading, singing, or examining their contents; and the novelty consists in the construction of the same, as will be hereim after more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a rear view of a book with my invention applied thereto to hold it open, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the clamp as it appears when detached from the book.
A B are Y-shaped levers, provided with ears a a b b, bent inwardly at a right angle, and hinged together by means of the rivet C. The longer ends or jaws of the levers are cutaway to form a recess, D, which permits them to press the covers without abrading (r damaging the back of the book.
E is a coiled spring, its free ends extending under the handles F G of the clamp proper, so as to hold thelonger'ends or jaw shut. By pressingthe handles F G together the jaws are opened and the clamp is applied to the open book, so that its back lies in the recess D .of one of the j aws. This prevents the clamp from slipping out of place, and at the same time all danger of inj uring the back is prevented, which is liable to occur in those forms of clamp where the jaws are straight.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
A clamp composedof the levers A B, having cars a a b b, rivet O, and spring E, the free ends of which extend under the handles F G, and having the jaws formed with a recess, D substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK E; HALLIDAY.
