B. H. GATTON.
GRAIN OAR DOOR.
INVENTQR ATTORNEYS.
v UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
BENJAMIN H. GATTON, OF BATH, ILLINOIS.
GRAIN-CAR DOOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 289,247, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed May 14, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. GATTON, of Bath, county of Mason, Illinois, have invented anew and Improved Grain-Oar Door, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My improved grain-car door consists of a plate of boiler-iron or other suitable material arranged in slideways inside of the common door, and extending through one of the door-posts into the space between the outer and inner casin gs of the shell of the car-body,whereinto said iron door is shifted by sliding it back when it is required to be opened, and the door-post against which the end of the door abuts when shut has a cleat, which, together with the outer walls of the groove in the floor and of the slot in the post, through which th e, door slides, supports the door against the pressure of the grain,
the arrangement being very simple to construct andalso to operate, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is an inside perspective elevation of one of the sides of a grain-car, showing my improved grain-door arrangement, part of the inner casing of the said side being broken out to show the space in which the door slides; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the door alone.
I take a sheet of boiler-plate or other suitable material, of sufficient thickness to have ample strength forresisting the pressure of the grain, and arrange a groove, I), for it along the door-sill, and also along the car-sill past the post 0, through which I make a slot, d, to al low of sliding the door a into and out of the space 6 between the inner ceiling, f, and the outer casing, g, of the car'body. At h, I arrange a cleat, against which the end of the door shutting against post i rests, to be supported against the pressure of the grain, and at j, I make a notch in the upper edge of the graindoor, to fasten it, shut or open, by a pin, 7r, that is to be inserted in a hole of post 0, arranged so that the pin crosses the door in the notch, and thus firmly secures it.
To facilitate the sliding of the door forward and backward in its ways, I attach a chain or chains, Z, to the upper edge of said door, and near the front end.
This door is to be used inside of and together with the ordinary door, which slides in a similar manner on the outside of the car.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A grain-car door consisting of a metal plate, a, arranged in a groove, b, of the door-si1l, and in a slot, d, in one of the door-posts, combined with the cleat h on the other post, the groove if being extended along the car-sill beyond the post, and between the siding g and the ceiling f, and said door having a notch, j, for the fas ening-pin, and a chain, Z, for operating it, all substantially as herein described.
