UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES JOHN GALLOWAY AND JOHN HENRY BECKWITH, OF MANCHESTER, COUNTY OF LANCASTER, ENGLAND.
GOVERNOR FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,246, dated November :27, 1883.
Application filed August 11, 1883. (No model.) Patontedin England January 29, 18B3,No. 470.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OHARLns J OHN GALLO- WAY and JOHN HENRY BEOKWTTH, citizens of England, both residing at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented IO following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a construction of astatic governor for steam and other fluidpressure engines, of a simple character, capabl'e of being readily adapted to different speeds I and powers, as we will describe, referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure I is an elevation, and Fig. 2 is aplan, of our improved governor.
On an upright spindle, A, we fix a cross- 20 head, B, at each end of which are jointed a pair of links, C, suspending between them a roller, D. On the spindle A a weight, E, is fitted to slide on a feather, which causes it to revolve along with the spindle, andto the weight E is connected, preferablyin one piece with it, the boss F, grooved at G to engage the lever of the regulating or expansion valve of the engine in the usual way. The under surfaces of the weight E are curved outward and downward, as shown at H, so that as the ,rollersD are caused by centrifugal force to move outward their movement raises the weight E, the relation which the ascent of the weight bears to the centrifugal force resulting from certain speed of rotation being dependent on the curvature of the surfaces H. By making these surfaces approximately parabolic the governor may be made isochronous, or nearly so.
Having thus described the nature of our invention and the best means we know of carrying it out in practice, we claim- A governor wherein rollers suspended by links from a cross-head on a vertical spindle bear against outwardly and downwardly curved under surfacesof a weight, which is fitted to slide on the spindle, and which engages the lever of the regulating or expansion valve, the curvature of said surfaces being parabolic. or approximately so, substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our
