UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD SULLIVAN AND ROBERT TOBIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COM MODE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 289,168, dated November 2'7, 1883,
Application filed February 17, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD SULLIVAN, a subject of Great Britain, and ROBERT TOBIN, a citizen of the United States of America, both residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oommodes, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
Theinvention relates to commodes andchamher-vessels; and it consists in a vessel provided with a deep groove containing water in its upper edge, and also a socket or hole in one side, in combination with a lid havingaflange fitting in the groove in the vessel, and apivot or log fitting to the socket, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe it, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the vessel; Fig. 2, a side view of the cover, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the same.
A represents a vessel formed of any desired shape and material, and having in its upper edge a deep annular groove, a, in which fits an annular flange, b, formed upon the cover B. This groove is partially filled with water, and when the flange b enters the trough or groove the vessel is effectually sealed' Upon one side the vessel A is formed in its upper edge with a vertical hole or socket, a, which is somewhat deeper than the groove 0:, and the cover B is formed or provided with a corresponding lug or projection, b, which enters the socket a and forms a pivot, upon which the lid or cover may be swung to one side or the other after being lifted until the flange and groove are clear of each other. It also aids in preventing the displacement of the cover by any sudden movement or inclination while the vessel is being carried about.
It will be understood that the annular groove is slightly inclined toward the vertical hole or socket, which latter is made deep enough to contain all the water for sealingpurposes when the lid is removed. This prevents any liability of spilling the water, and when the cover is placed in position the projection enters the socket and forces the water out into the groove before the flange is fully seated. If found desirable, the cover may be hinged in a suitable manner to the side of the vessel and never entirely removed therefrom, and any number of the sockets or holes may be used that may be found necessary or desirable.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A commode or similar vessel having a groove in its upper edge and a vertical socket upon one side, in combination with a cover formed with a flange, and a projection or pivot adapt ed to fit the groove and socket in the vessel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
' EDWARD SULLIVAN.
ROBERT TOBIN.
