9 Claims. (Cl. 1224-2) This invention relates to an incinerator and water heater combination. More specifically the invention relates to a low pressure boiler for heating hot water, saidboiler including an incinerator chamber and a fluid fuel red heater chamber.
Various types of combined water heaters and incinerators have been designed in previous years. Most of these have not been successful because of the high cost of manufacture and their inefficiency in operation. Furthermore, the conventional incinerator would generally burn refuse and garbage, but no suitable provision would be had for continuing the heating of hot water in the boiler unit when theunit was not being heated by the burning of refuse, etc, It is a prime object of this invention therefore to provide an improved, and completely eliicient incinerator and hot water heater or boiler combination.

Referring now particularly to Figures l and 2 a combined incinerator and hot water heater is generally designated by the reference character 10. The incinerator and water heater 10 comprises essentially a boiler casing 10' including upright side Walls 11. The upright side walls 11 also include a ceramic or heat resistant inner wall 12, the side walls 11 being s constructed to provide for a layer of insulating material generally designated at 13;. The boiler casing lil also includes a front Wall 14 and a rear wall 15. A door 16 provides for access into the interior of the boiler casing 10. The boiler casing 10' is supported on a burner casing 17 suitably lined with fire brick as indicated at 18 to provide at its forward end an ash pit 19 and at its rearward end a chamber 20. The ash pit 19 includes an ash pit door 21 and suitable grates 22 generally schematically shown. In the charnber Ztl conventional gas coils 23 are indicated. It is of course understood and realized that any suitable burner unit may be utilized in this chamber, the said units being operated either by gas, oil, kerosene or other similar fluids.
The upper portion of the boiler casing 10 comprises essentially, a water shell generally designated by the reference character 24. The water shell 24 comprises la wrapper or outer sheet 25 of generally inverted U-shaped configuration. A first inner sheet 26 generally conforms to the configuration of the Wrapper 25 and is positioned at the forward end of the boiler casing 10. Al second inner sheet 27 is longitudinally spaced from the sheet 26, the said second inner sheet 27 also conforming to the shape of the wrapper 25 and being disposed iny longitudinally spaced relation with respect to the sheet 2,6 atA the rearward portion of the boiler casing 10. The second inner sheets. 26 and 27 are vertically spaced with respect to the wrapper sheet 25 to provide a rst or. upper. water chamber 28.
As best shown in Figures l, 2 and 3 a front sheet or partition is designated at 29, the said partition being suitably spaced from the front wall 14. A suitable cylin.- drical sheet section Si) seals the front water leg 31 formed by the partition 29 with respect to the access door 16. A rear sheet or partition 32 is. suitably spaced from the rear wall 15 to provide a rear water leg 33. The rear wall 15 is provided with a water inlet 34 which deliverswateij to the rear water leg 33 and thence throughout the water chambers and the boiler casing 10. Similarly an. outlet 35- directs the water. from the boiler casing 1li.
As best shown in Figures l and 2 the rear portion. of the sheet 26 and theV front portion of the sheet 27 have respectively suitably connected thereto transverselyV exf tending substantially intermediate walls or baffles 36 and 37, the said walls 36 and 37 being relatively longitudinal? ly spaced. The lower ends of the walls 36 and 37 are connected to a suitable lower transversely extending wall 38 which together with the walls 36 and 37/ provide ya second water chamber 39', which is disposed below the upper Water chamber 28. Thus while the water cham'- ber 28 is of generally inverted U-shaped configuration by virtue of the configuration of the wrapper sheet 25, the said chamber 39 extends completely across the Water shell of the boiler, the said'second chamber being of course in direct communication with Vthe first chamber 28.
A centrally disposed ceramic partition is designated at 411. The ceramic partition 40 separates a rst heating or incinerator chamber 41 from a second heating or fue! tired chamber 42 as best shown in Figures vll, '2' and''3'. The irst heating chamber is disposed immediately: above the ash pit 19@ and above theA grates, 212. The, fluid fuel' chamber 42 is disposed immediately above the chamber 20 and specifically above the gas coils 23. Referring particularly to Figure 3, transversely spaced and longitudinally extending mud drums 43 are shown. The mud drums 43 extend longitudinally along opposite sides, at the bottom, of the first and second chambers 41 and i2 respectively.
As best shown in Figures l and 4, a transversely extending mud drum is disposed immediately below the partition 4i), the said mud drum 4.4 being open at opposite ends as indicated at 45, in Figure 3, for communicating with the mud drums 43. The mud drums i3 also, at opposite ends, are open as indicated at 46 and d'7, to provide for free communication with the water legs 31 and 33. As also indicated in Figures l through 4, first water tubes 48 are connected to the mud drums and extend upwardly immediately adjacent the ceramic inner walls 12, the said tubes 48 being in communication with the iirst water chamber 28, the said communicating point being indicated by the reference character 49. The mud drum 44 also has connected thereto a plurality of second vertically extending water tubes Si) and 51. The tubes 50 are disposed on one side of the partition and the tubes 51 are disposed on the other side of the partition 30, the said tubes being laterally spaced and extending upwardly through the lower wall 38 for communication 'f with the second chamber 39.
As best shown in Figures l and 2 longitudinally extending water tubes 52 are disposed immediately above the chamber 41 and longitudinally extending water tubes 53 are immediately disposed above the chamber 42. longitudinal tubes 52 are supported on the walls Z9 and 36 and the tubes 53 are supported on the walls 3'/ and 32. A ceramic bale 54 is supported immediately above the water tubes 52 and 53. The tubes 52 are in communication with the front water leo 31 and the lower chamber 39. The tubes 53 are in communication with the chamber 39 and the rear water leg 33. Clean-out plugs 55 are provided in such a position that access to the tubes 52 and 53 may easily be had for cleaning the same. Immediately above the baies 54 a smoke outlet 56 is provided which is in communication with the heating chamber 41. A smoke outlet 57 is in communication with the heating chamber 42.
In the operation of the combination incinerator and Water heater, water enters through the inlet 34 to the rear leg 33 to the mud drums 43, 44, to the front water leg 31, to the chambers 28, 39 and the tubes 4S, 50 and 51 are also filled with water. Discharge of the water is through the discharge outlet 35, this being the hot water outlet. Refuse and garbage may be placed into the incinerator or heating chamber on grates 22 and may be burned thereon. The grates 22 may be of conventional construction being rockably supported so that ashes can fall down into the ash pit 19 where the ashes can be removed through the clean-out door 21. Thus due to the burning of garbage and refuse, the hot water tubes disposed within the incinerator chamber 41 are heated simultaneously with the heating of the water tubes disposed in the uid fuel fired chamber 42,. Also when the incinerator chamber is not utilized the coils 23 are effective to eiciently heat the water in the chamber 42 and to circulate water through the unit in an effective and eicient fashion. The vertically extending tubes 56 and 51 are also thus heated. Either or both of the chambers 41 and 42 may be placed in operation to eifectively produce hot water in the hot water tubes. Disposition of the vertical tubes along the sides of the ceramic inner walls 12, with the disposition of the transversely spaced vertical tubes 50 and 51, provides an efficient heat exchange so that an eicient hot water boiler results. Furthermore, the disposition of the tubes 52 and 53 also adds to the eciency of the unit. Thus water circulation from the tubes 52 and 53 to the chamber 39 may be simultaneous with the discharge of water from the tubes 50 and 51 to the said chamber 39 causing a highly eicient result in the operation of the boiler unit.
Thus it is readily apparent that a highly efficient combined incinerator and hot water heater has been described, the said unit permitting the burning of trash and other refuse and simultaneously or separately permitting the heating of the water by a means of a fuel such as oil, gas, etc. Thus it is believed that the objects of the invention have been fully achieved and it must be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as disclosed or the scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An incinerator and water heater comprising an outer boiler casing having longitudinally extending side walls and front and rear walls, a burner casing disposed below and supporting said boiler casing, a water shell connected to the upper portion of said boiler casing, said water shell comprising an outer sheet of generally U-shaped configuration extending longitudinally substantially the length of said boiler casing, rst and second longitudinally spaced inner sheets disposed below said outer sheet and conforming generally to the configuration of said outer sheet to provide an upper first water chamber, a front partition spaced from the front wall and a rear partition spaced from the rear wall to provide front and rear water legs communicating with said rst water chamber, said front and rear partitions being connected respectively to said first and second inner sheets, first and second longitudinally spaced transversely extending intermediate walls within said water shell, the first intermediate wall being connected to said rst inner sheet, the second intermediate wall being connected to said second inner sheet, a lower horizontally extending wall connecting said intermediate walls to provide a second water chamber communicating with said first water chamber, said inner sheets, front and rear partitions, and intermediate walls providing an incinerator chamber and a fluid fuel red relatively longitudinally spaced chamber, a central partition extending transversely between said incinerator and uid fuel tired chambers, laterally spaced longitudinally extending mud drums disposed on opposite sides at the lower portion of said incinerator and fluid fuel tired chambers, said longitudinally extending mud drums communicating with said front and rear water legs, a plurality of rst water tubes connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums and extending vertically on opposite sides of said incinerator and fluid fuel iired chambers and communicating with said rst water chamber, a transversely extending mud drum connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums for communication therewith, a plurality of second vertically extending transversely spaced water tubes connected to said transverse mud drum on opposite sides of said central position and communicating with said transverse mud drum, said tubes being in communication with said second water chamber, and a plurality of longitudinally extending tubes in said incinerator and fluid fuel red chambers communicating with said front and rear Water legs and said second water chamber.
2. An incinerator and water heater comprising an outer boiler casing having longitudinally extending side walls and front `and rear walls, a burner casing disposed below and supporting said boiler casing7 a water shell connected to the upper portion of said boiler casing, said water shell comprising an outer sheet extending longitudinally, first and second longitudinally spaced inner sheets disposed below said outer sheet in vertically spaced relation to provide an upper first water chamber, a front partition spaced from the iront wall and a rear partition spaced from the rear wall to provide front and rear water legs communicating with said first Water chamber, said front and rear partitions being connected respectively to said rst and second inner sheets, first and second longitudinally spaced transversely extending intermediate Walls within said Waterl shell, the rst intermediate wall being connected to said first inner sheet, the second intermediate wall being connected to said second inner sheet, a lower horizontally extending wall connecting said intermediate walls to provide a second water chamber communicating with said rst water chamber, said inner sheets, front and rear partitions, and intermediate Walls providing longitudinally spaced first and second heating chambers, a central partition extending trnasversely between said heating chambers, laterally spaced longitudinally extending mud drums disposed on opposite sides at the lower portion of said first and second heating chambers, said longitudinally extending mud drums communicating with said front and rear water legs, a plurality of first water tubes connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums and extending vertically on opposite sides of said heating chambers and communicating with said first water chamber, a transversely extending mud drum connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums for communication therewith, a plurality of second vertically extending transversely spaced water tubes connected to said transverse mud drum on opposite sides of said central-partition and communicating with said transverse mud drum, said tubes being in communication with said second water chamber, and a plurality of longitudinally extending tubes in said rst and second heating chambers communicating with said front and rear water legs and said second water chamber.
3. An incinerator and water heater comprising an outer boiler casing having longitudinally extending side walls and front and rear walls, a burner casing disposed below and supporting said boiler casing, a water shell connected to the upper portion of said boiler casing, said Water shell comprising an outerl sheet, extending longitudinally, first land second longitudinally spaced inner sheets disposed below said outer sheet in vertically spaced relation to provide an upper first water chamber, `a front partition spaced from the frontl Wall, a rear partition spaced from the rear Wall to provide front and rear water legs communicating With said first water chamber, said front and rear partitions being connected respectively to said first and second inner sheets, first and second longitudinally spaced transversely extending intermediate walls within said water shell, the first intermediate wall being connected to said first inner sheet, the second intermediate wall being connected to said second inner sheet, a lower horizontally extending wall connecting said intermediate walls to provide a second Water chamber communicating with said first Water chamber, said inner sheets, frontand rear partitions, and intermediate walls providing longitudinally spaced first and second heatingchambers respectively communicating with said incinerator and fluid fired chambers, a central partition extendingV transversely between said heating chambers, laterally spaced longitudinally extending mud drums disposedy on opposite sides at the lower portion of said rst and second heating chambers, said longitudinally extendingmud drums communicating with said front and'` rearrwater legs,` aV plurality of first water tubes connected to said longitudinally extending vertically on opposite sides of said heating chambers and communicating with said first water chamber, a transversely extending mud drum connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums for communication therewith, and a plurality of second vertically extending transversely spaced water tubes connected to said transverse mud drum on opposite sides of said central partition and communicating with said transverse mud drum, said tubes being in communication with said second water chamber.

An incinerator and water heater comprising an outer boiler casing having longitudinally extending side walls and front and rear walls, a burner casing disposed below Vand supporting said boiler casing, a water shell connected to the upper portion of said boiler casing, said water shell comprising an outer sheet, first and second longitudinally spaced inner sheets disposed below said outer sheet` to provide an upper first Water chamber, first and second longitudinally spaced transversely extending intermediate walls within said water shell, the first intermediate wall being connected to said first inner sheet, the second intermediate wall being connected to said second inner sheet, a lower horizontally extending wall connecting said intermediate walls to provide a second water chamber beneath said first Water chamber and communicating therewith, said inner sheets, and intermediate walls providing longitudinally spaced first and second heating chambers, la central partition extending transversely between said'heating chambers, laterally spaced longitudinally extending mud drums disposed on opposite sides at the lower portion of said first and second heatingrchambers, a plurality of first Water tubes con.- nected to said longitudinally extending mud drums and extending vertically on opposite sides of said heating chambers and communicating with said first water chamber, `a transversely 'extending mud drum connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums for communication therewith, a plurality of second vertically extending transversely spaced water tubes connected to said transverse mud drum on opposite sides of said central partition and communicating with said transverse mud drum, said tubes being in communication With said second water chamber, and a plurality of longitudinally extending tubes in said first and second heating chambers communicating with said front 'and rear water legs andsaid second water chamber.
5. An incinerator and water heater comprising an outer boiler casing having longitudinally extending side walls and front and rear walls, a burner casing disposed below and supporting said Iboiler casing, a water shell connected to the upper portion of said boiler casing, said water shell comprising an outer sheet, first and second longitudinally spaced inner sheets disposed below said ou-ter sheet to provide an upper first water chamber, first and second longitudinally spaced transversely extending intermediate walls within said water shell, the first intermediate Wall being connected to said first inner sheet, the second intermediate Wall being connected to said second inner sheet, a lower horizontally extending wall connecting saidv intermediate walls to provide a second water chamber below and communicating with said first water chamber, said Iinner sheets, and intermediate walls providing longitudinally spaced first and second heating chambers, a central partition extending transversely between said :heating chambers, laterally spaced longitudinally extending -mud drums disposed on opposite sides` at the llower portion of said first and second heating chambers, a plurality of first water tubes connected -to said longitudinally extending mud drums and extending vertically on opposite sides of said heating chambers and communicating with said first Water chamber, a transversely extending mud drum connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums yfor cornmunication therewith, and a plurality of second vertically extending transversely spaced water tubes connected to said transverse mud drum on opposite sides of said central partition and communicating with said transverse mud drum, said tubes being in communication with said second water chamber.
6. An incinerator and water heater comprising an outer boiler casing having longitudinally extending side Walls and front and rear walls, a burner casing disposed below said boiler casing, a Water shell connected to the upper portion of said boiler casing, said water shell comprising an outer sheet, first and second longitudinally spaced inner sheets disposed below said outer sheet and conforming generally to the configuration of said outer sheet to provide an upper first water chamber, first and second longitudinally spaced transversely extending substantially intermediate walls within said water shell, the first intermediate wall being connected to said first inner sheet, the second intermediate wall being connected to said second inner sheet, a lower horizontally extending wall connecting said intermediate walls to provide a second water chamber disposed below and communicating with said first water chamber, said inner sheets, and intermediate walls providing longitudinally spaced first and second heating chambers, a central partition extending transversely between said heating chambers, laterally spaced longitudinally extending mud drums disposed on opposite sides of the lower portion of said first and second heating chambers, passage means connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums on opposite sides of said heating chambers and communicating with said rst water chamber, a transversely extending mud drum connected to said longitudinally extending mnd drums for communication therewith, and a plurality of vertically extending spaced water tubes connected to said transverse mud drum on opposite sides of said central partition and communicating with said transverse mud drum, said tubes being in communication with said second water chamber.
7. An incinerator and water heater comprising an outer boiler casing having longitudinally extending side walls and front and rear walls, a burner casing disposed below and supporting said boiler casing, a water shell connected to the upper portion of said boiler casing to provide a first water chamber, a front partition spaced from the front wall, a rear partition spaced from the rear wall to provide front and rear water legs communicating with said first water chamber, first and second longitudinally spaced transversely extending intermediate walls within said water she-ll and disposed below said first water chamber, a lower horizontally extending wall connecting said intermediate walls to provide a second water chamber disposed below and communicating with said first water chamber, first and second heating chambers disposed below said first and second water chambers, a central partition extending transversely between said heating chambers, laterally spaced longitudinally extending mud drums disposed on opposite sides at the lower portion of said first and second heating chambers, said longitudinally extending mud drums communicating with said front and rear water legs, a plurality of first water tubes connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums and extending vertically on opposite sides of said heating chambers and communicating with said first water chamber, a transversely extending mud drum connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums for communication therewith, a plurality of second vertically extending transversely spaced water tubes connected to said transverse mud drum on opposite sides of said central partition and communicating with said transverse mud drum, said tubes being in communication with said second water chamber, and a plurality of longitudinally extending tubes in said first and second heating chambers communicating with said front and rear water legs and said second water chamber.
8. An incinerator and water heater comprising an outer boiler casing having longitudinally extending side walls and front and rear walls, a burner casing disposed below and supporting said boiler casing, a water shell connected to the upper portion of said boiler casing, said water shell having an upper first water chamber, first and second longitudinally spaced transversely extending vertical walls within said water shell, a lower horizontally extending wall connecting said vertical walls to provide a lower second water chamber communicating with said upper first water chamber, first and second heating chambers, laterally spaced longitudinally extending mud drums disposed on opposite sides at the lower portion of said first and second heating chambers, a plurality of first water tubes connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums and extending vertically on opposite sides of said heating chambers and communicating with said upper first water chamber, a transversely extending mud drum connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums for communication therewith, a plurality of second vertically extending transversely spaced water tubes connected to said transverse mud drum and communicating with said transverse mud drum, said tubes being in communication with said upper first water chamber, and a plurality of longitudinally extending tubes in said first and second heating chambers communicating with said front and rear legs and said second water chamber.
9. An incinerator and water heater comprising an outer boiler casing having longitudinally extending side walls and front and rear walls, a burner casing disposed below and supporting said boiler casing, a water shell connected to the upper portion of said boiler casing, said water shell comprising an upper first water chamber, said first and second inner sheets, first and second longitudinally spaced transversely extending intermediate walls within said water shell, a lower horizontally extending wall connecting said intermediate walls to provide a lower second water chamber communicating with said first Water chamber, longitudinally spaced first and second heating chambers disposed below said water shell, a central partition extending transversely between Isaid heating chambers, laterally spaced longitudinally extending mud drums disposed on opposite sides at the lower portion of said first and second heating chambers, a plurality of first Water tubes connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums and extending vertically on opposite sides of said heating chambers and communicating with said upper first water chamber, a transversely extending mud drum connected to said longitudinally extending mud drums for communication therewith, and a plurality of second vertically extending transversely spaced water tubes connected to said transverse mud drum on opposite sides of said central partition and communicating with said transverse mud drum, said tubes being in communication with said second water chamber.
